    Term 1 Major Assignment

    The Australian FlagThe flag of Australia is a blue field

    with the Union Jack in the the top

    left hand corner and a large white

    seven-pointed star known as the

    Commonwealth Star in the lower left

    corner. The flag also contains therepresentation of the Southern Cross

    Star Constellation, made up of five white stars - one small five pointed star

    and four larger seven pointed stars.

    The Aboriginal Flag

    The Aboriginal Flag is a flag thatrepresents Australian Aboriginals. It is one

    of the official flags of Australia, however it

    is not the Australian National Flag. It was

    designed in 1971 by Aboriginal artist

    Harold Thomas, who is descended from the

    Luritja people of Central Australia.The flag was originally designed for the

    land rights movement, and it became a symbol of the Australian Aboriginal

    people. It is horizontally divided into a black region (above) and a red

    region (below).A yellow circle is in the centre of the flag.- Black: Represents the Aboriginal people of Australia.- Red: Represents the red earth, the red ochre and the spiritual relation

    to the land.- Yellow: Represents the Sun.

    The Coat Of ArmsThe Coat of Arms of Australia (formally known as Commonwealth Coat Of

    Arms) is the official symbol of Australia. The initial Coat of Arms was

    granted by King Edward the 7th on the 7 May 1908, and the current

    version was granted by King George the 5th on 19 September 1912. The

    Shield is the focal point of the Coat of Arms, contained within is the

    badge of each Australian state, the whole surrounded by a border

    representing the federation of the states.

    The Red Kangaroo and the Emu that

    support the shield are the official

    animal emblems of the nation. It isoften claimed these animals were

    chosen because neither animal cannot

    move backwards, only forward - i.e.

    progress. In the background is wreath

    of the Golden Wattle, the official

    National floral emblem.

    State SymbolsACT-The current state flag of the ACT was

    officially adopted by the Australian Capital

    Territory Legislative Assembly in 1993. The

    flag differs from the other Australian state

    flags as it does not have the British Union

    Jack. It is a vertical 1:2 bicolour of blue with

    the Southern Cross and gold with the ACT

    NSW-The current state flag of NSW was officiallyadopted by the government of New South Wales

    in 1876. The flag has the British Union Jack in

    the top left hand quarter with the state badge

    centred on the right half of the flag. The badge,

    based on the British Coat of Arms, is a white

    disc with the Cross of St George, a golden lion in

    the centre of the cross and an eight-pointed gold star on each arm of the

    cross.QLD-The flag Of QLD has the British Union Jack

    in the top left hand quarter with the state

    badge centred on the right half of the flag.

    The current design came into use in 1953,

    when the crown on the badge was changedto St Edwards Crown.

    VIC-The flag of Victoria has the British Union Jack in the top left hand

    quarter with the state badge centred on the right half of the flag. The

    state badge is the Southern Cross topped by an

    imperial crown, which is currently St Edward's

    Crown. The stars of the Southern Cross are white

    and range from five to eight points with each star

    having one point pointing to the top of the flag.

    The flag dates from 1865, with minor variations,

    the last of which was in 1953.

    WA-The current state flag of Western Australia was officially adopted by the

    government of Western Australia in 1953. The flag has the British Union

    Jack in the top left hand quarter with the state badge centred on theright half of the flag. The badge is a gold disc with

    a native Black Swan, with the swan facing towards

    the Union Jack. The black swan has long been a

    symbol of Western Australia, in fact theoriginal colony was called the Swan River Colony at

    the location which is now Perth.

    SA-The current state flag of South Australia was officially adopted by the

    government of South Australia in 1904. The flag

    has the British Union Jack in the top left hand

    quarter with the state badge centred on the

    right half of the flag. The badge is a gold disc

    featuring a Piping Shrike with its wingsoutstretched. The badge is believed to have

    been originally designed by Robert Craig, a teacher from the School of

    Arts in Adelaide and was officially gazetted on 14 January 1904.NT-The current state flag of the Northern

    Territory was officially adopted by the

    Northern Territory Government in 1978. The

    Northern Territory has been in existence since

    1911, but could not hoist it's first flag until

    self-government in 1978. It is a vertical 1:2 bicolour black background

    and white Southern Cross and remainder of flag is ochre with a stylised

    Desert Rose.

    TAS-The current state flag of Tasmania wasofficially adopted following a proclamation by

    Tasmanian Governor Sir Fredrick Weld on 25

    September 1876, and was gazetted the same

    day. The flag has the British Union Jack in

    the top left hand quarter with the state

    badge of a red lion on a white disc centred

    on the right half of the flag.

    Australia DayAustralia Day is the official national day of Australia and is celebrated

    annually on 26 January. It marks the anniversary of the arrival of the

    first fleet at Port Jackson, New South Wales,

    and raising of the British flag in 1788. Inmodern Australia, celebrations reflect the

    diverse society and landscape of the nation, and

    is marked by community and family events,

    reflections on Australian history, official

    community awards and citizenship ceremonies

    welcoming new immigrants into Australian

    community.

    ANZAC DayAnzac Day is a national day of

    remembrance in Australia and New

    Zealand that commemorates all

    Australians and New Zealanders who

    served and died in all wars, conflicts,

    and peacekeeping operations. On the

    25th April every year we honour the

    members of the Australianand NewZealandArmyCorps (ANZAC) who

    fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during

    World War 1.
