Departmental achievements

Besides producing top class Automobile Engineering Graduates to cater to the market need, the department actively encourages students to participate in different National and International level project competitions. Among these mention may first be made of BAJA SAE INDIA Competition in which our students have been participating since 2007 and also got a 2nd prize in the Cost Award Section in 2007. As for the International level, our students with active support of the department are competing in a Racing Car Competition Project under their FALCON Project 2009.

We are CSI Institution Member. We have also a CSI Student Chapter.

Professional activities The major professional activities of the department centre around motivating the faculty members to participate in seminars and workshops with a view to upgrading their technical skill as also to organize in-house workshops and seminars including technical seminars with invited speakers and involving the senior level students. During 2007,2008 and 2009 as many as 12 seminars and workshops were organized by the department.

Professional Society Memberships

As many as 8 senior faculty members are members of different professional bodies like IEEE, SESI, SPIE, IETE, IE etc.

Professional activities Since its inception the department has been motivating and sponsoring the faculty members to participate in National and International level, seminars and workshops with a view to upgrading their technical skill as also to organize in-house workshops and seminars including technical seminars with eminent invited speakers and involving the senior level students. During 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 as many as 6 seminars and workshops were organized by the department. This besides, for the past few years the department has been actively participating in continuing education by providing practical/laboratory training to students of Institution of Engineers (India) Section B.

Consultancy activities So far the department extended its expertise in the preparation of an infrastructure plan for ECE Department of the proposed Madhuthali Institute of Technology, Jharkhand. The department was also involved in the Foundation for Advancement of Education and Research, FAER of Motorola (India) Ltd. The project was application of Cell phone SMS for Data Sending and Receiving for control of Electrical Application in the Rural Area.

17 Academic Sessions July to June every year. Examination system, Year/Sem

Semester-wise. As per the University system Examinations are held in two different semesters in a year. Odd Semester (July to December) and Even Semester (January to June).

Period of declaration of results

It is done by the University, results are normally declared by August at the latest.

18 Counseling/Mentoring

We have a counseling/mentoring system at the Institute. We have one appointed mentor also. Who gives her counseling case by case with good results. We have also one Mediation Centre at the Institute which often effectively supplements the counseling.

Career Counseling

Career Counseling is regularly done through out the year by our CRTT Cell (T&P Cell). Along this specified technical counseling, the Soft Skill Counseling is given by the Faculty Members in the labs and outside of it.

Medical Facilities

We have regular Medical Facilities in the Institute both for the students and for the staff members. We have one Health and Medicare Centre under the MCKV Group of Institutions from where necessary Medical Facilities are available. This centre is situated adjacent to the Campus. However, at the Campus itself we have emergency system of providing medical facilities.

Student Insurance

We have in the Institute a Student Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy with ICICI Lombard General Insurance. Under this Insurance 1240 students and 123 Academic Staff Members are covered.

19 Students Activity Body In our Institution system, we do not have any permanent statutory Student Activity Body. However, such bodies are constituted from time to time by the Authorities for different student activities in the Institute.

Cultural Activities In the Institute students conduct various cultural activities throughout the year which culminates in the Annual Fest called UTOPIA.

Sport Activities Sports activities like participating in different Football and Cricket Tournaments are regularly done by the students. We have an appointed Cricket Couch in the Institute and we are member of the Cricket Association of Bengal. These besides the college Annual Indoor and Outdoor Sports Meet are arranged regularly.

Literary Activities Students interested in literary activities are regularly encouraged and sponsored by the Institute. Very recently with the Institutional Sponsorship one of our Automobile Engineering final year student Sri Pravin Krumar Jha has published his book of poems “Ankahee”

Magazine/Newsletter College Annual Magazine “MCKVIANS’ DIGEST” is published regularly. And under the guidance of the teachers, students actively take part in bringing out the magazine. In the publication of the College New Letter MCKVIE Times students also take active part.

Technical Activity/Tech Fest Technical Activity: Students take active interests in Technical Activities. For many years past the Institute arranges for students a Technical Project Exhibition – cum- Competition called “TECHNOTICA”. On an average 20-30 projects are presented by students before a Selection Committee comprising External Experts from different Universities of the State. The shortlisted projects are presented in the Annual Examination where again External Experts adjudicate and 4 to 5 best projects are selected. These are sent regularly to the Bengal Industrial and Technological Museum annual competition held every year in Kolkata where our students get prizes every year. Some of the these project are then exhibited in the INFOCOM Kolkata every year. This year the project entitled “Automatic Railway Gate Crossing” got the Best Prize at BITM. This and another project entitled “Automatic Toll Tax Collection” were exhibited in the INFOCOM 2010. Students also participate in different Technical Project Competition conducted by other Institutions. Our Automobile Engineering students also take part every year in the BAJA SAE India Competition. With their manufactured vehicle as per the BAJA Specifications.

For the first time our students are organized a Tech Fest in the Institute Campus on 6 & 7 March 2010. Many colleges including some colleges from other States are participated in this Tech Fest Eminent Scientist/Technologists from different Institutions and Industries delivered expert lectures in this Tech Fest.

Industrial Visits/Tours

Industrial visits by the students are regularly arranged by the Institute. This is done principally in form of their Summer Trainings and also in form of some special training of Automobile Engineering students.

Alumni Activities After systematic exercises the alumni activities at the Institute have been finally brought to an order. With a view to streamlining the activities two major meetings of the alumni had been organized on 26 December 2009 and 23 January 2010. Finally on 23 January 2010 we constituted the MCKVIE Alumni Association with an Executive Body of nine members, including two Ex-officio Members. Registration of the Association is in active process. The alumni now have their own office in the campus. Rules and Bye-laws have already been framed. Academic Advisory Body

In line with the Government Engineering Colleges as also many Private Self-Financing Institutes of the State of West Bengal, we constituted on 27 July 2007 an Academic Advisory Body, called Academic Advisory Committee (AAC), in this Institute. The primary objective of constituting such an Advisory Body has been to advise/assist the Principal in running the Institute. With this primary objective the Academic Advisory Committee deliberates and reviews the academic affairs of the Institute on a regular basis. That is why the Committee sits once in every month with the provision that in case of any emergent academic or administrative need the Chairperson may advise the Convener of the Committee to convene any meeting of the Council at any point of time. With the approval of the Governing Body of the Institute the Committee has been constituted in the following manner.

2) Heads of all Academic Departments : Members

3) Two faculty members (other than the HOD) from each academic department selected/nominated from among the full – time faculty members (of the rank of Lecturer or above) of the department.

1) For B.Tech Courses: For these course admissions are done through West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination and (WBJEE called JEM) and All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Eligibility for Admission into these courses is stipulated by both the boards in each year. Candidates who qualify in these two tests are processed for admission in the Colleges of the State through the Central Selection Committee. Candidates as allocate to an Institution by the CSC are admitted accordingly. Therefore, colleges do not have any freedom to specify any cut-off marks. As for JEM 2010 the WBJEE Board has specified for General Candidates the following criteria: Candidates must pass H.S (10+2) or its equivalent examination with a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics taken together and with atleast 30% marks in English with individual pass marks Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English and Vernacular (or any other 5th subject)

2) For MCA Course: For this course admission is done through Joint Entrance for Computer Application (JECA) as conducted under the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board. Basic eligibility for admission into this course is stipulated by the board. Candidates who qualify in this test are processed through the same Central Selection Committee. Candidates as allotted are admitted. Graduates in any discipline with Mathematics and/or Statistics as one of the subject in 10+2+3 pattern except (BBA) are eligible to apply for JECA. BCA, B.Tech and BE degree holders can also apply.

3) M.TECH in ECE: For admission into the M.Tech course there is so far no system of Joint Entrance Examination in the State. Admission is done by the Institute on the basis of applications submitted by candidates on fulfillment of stipulated and approved norms as also on the basis of Written Test and a Viva-voce Test. Because of the fact that M.Tech is a specialized course where in the present system not much applications are received, it is not often possible to specify any cut-off marks for admission. However, admission is strictly given on merit basis in accordance with the performance of the students in both the tests.
