Inspirit AI Scholars 2020

What is Inspirit AI?What do self-driving cars, Alexa, and iPhone's face recognition technology have in common? They are driven by modern advances in Artificial Intelligence. Inspirit AI Scholars is a pre-college enrichment program that exposes curious high school students (Grades 9 - 12) globally to AI, the defining technology of our times. The program is developed and taught exclusively by Stanford alumni and graduate students specializing in AI. Learn more at: www.inspiritai.com

Why Inspirit AI?We started Inspirit AI to inspire students at an early age to understand and apply this powerful technology to improve the world. The potential to apply this technology for good is limitless. We hope to bring the most recent developments in Artificial Intelligence from courses and labs in Silicon Valley to empower high school students globally.

Program StructureThe program is designed as a highly-interactive and experiential introduction to Artificial Intelligence

Students will learn about cutting-edge AI technologies like Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Deep Learning, Recommendation Engines

Students will understand modern applications such as speech-recognition, machine translation, automated medical imaging, and autonomous vehicles

Students will work on a mentor-led socially impactful AI project from a domain such as healthcare, agriculture, transportation, disaster-relief, etc. Student interests will be considered in matching them to projects.

Curriculum Week 1

In week 1 students will understand applications, foundational concepts, and develop AI programming skills.

Applications: We will start each day with a session on applications. E.g. “How can AI help doctors?” or “How does Alexa work?”

Conceptual Intuition: We will pick important machine learning algorithms, and provide conceptual intuition. E.g. Neural Networks, Decision Trees

Programming Skills: We will guide students to implement mini-projects using Python. E.g. Classifying breast cancer tumors using computer vision

Curriculum Part 2In week 2, students will apply the AI programming skills they learned in week 1 on a mentor-led AI for Social Good project, and will also go through college and career preparation workshops.

AI for Social Good Project: The students will work in teams of 3 – 4 to build an AI application under the guidance of a mentor. Project options and datasets will be previously chosen by instructors* to maximize learning. Students preferences will be factored in.

College and Career Workshops: Workshops will include gaining inspiration from successful Stanford college essays, preparing for top-ranked CS/AI programs in the US, and pursuing ventures or careers in AI. A digital poster making workshop will help teach students how to document and communicate their project experiences.

*Application form asks students to specify an AI project they would like to work on. Student input will be considered in picking fun and meaningful projects

AI for Social Good ProjectProjects will draw inspiration from topical examples relevant to various industries.

Transportation: AI for Distracted Driver Detection

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 3,450 people were killed in 2016 due to motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. Innovations in Smart Car trends using AI allow distracted driver detection through a dashboard camera that can alert drivers in dangerous situations (e.g. when falling asleep). We would build deep learning models to accomplish this.

Healthcare: AI for Eye Disease Diagnosis

Diabetic retinopathy is a dangerous eye condition that can lead to blindness if untreated. Detecting the disease typically requires a specialist eye doctor, and only 11 eye doctors exists for every 1 million people in India*. The use of computer vision models can automate this process allowing significantly more patients to be screened. We would work with deep learning models for detecting various health conditions.
