European Settlers to America in the 17th and 18th centuries brought traditional English, Dutch, French and German roofi ng styles to this developing country, recreating those styles from timber that was in plentiful supply. Cedar was split with an axe to make roof tiles or ‘Shakes’. The natural aesthetic appeal of ‘Shake’ roofs has been re-created in the Gerard Shake, incorporating easy installation features.

In Central Europe & America during the 18th century, natural split timbers were used to roof dwellings. These split timbers were prone to splitting in seasonal climatic conditions. The Ambassador Shake eliminates splitting, and the more serious threat from fi re, by re-creating the natural appearance of split wood tiles with chip-coated steel.

During the early 20th century Shingles were the most widely used roofi ng material. The overlapping tiles were originally crafted as small panels from cedar or terracotta. The Gerard Shingle has recreated three-dimensional shingles from 21st century materials and technology, coated with blends of natural stone chip.

Chic mediterranean style brings this traditional shape to life in 21st century technology using steel to give both beauty, endurance and strength.

The developers of Hotel KOMPAS, Kranjska Gora, set in a popular skiing

region of the Julian Alps in Slovenia, required a roofi ng product that would

blend with with the natural surroundings, provide protection for their guests

and be able to withstand the harshest of nature’s extremes. Gerard Heritage

was chosen for the strength of its advanced interlocking system, the ability to

hold snow on the roof preventing harm to people on the ground, while still

maintaining an asethically pleasing fi nish to the hotel.

T E C H N I C A LOUR TECHNICAL SUCCESS

Because all tile coatings are applied after pressing, there are no problems with crazing or micro-cracking.

STEEL

The steel is the heart of the tile and provides it with its strength, rigidity and light weight. The grade of steel we use is designed to allow forming without cracking or signifi cant elastic recovery and, at the same time, to be rigid enough to tolerate reasonable loads without excessive deformation.

ALUMINIUM-ZINC (ZINCALUME®)*

The primary protection for the steel is a coating of aluminium-zinc which contains approximately 55% aluminium and 43.5% zinc by weight. The aluminium-zinc coating combines the corrosion protection of aluminium with the sacrifi cial protection of zinc, giving the protective advantages of both metals. A signifi cant benefi t of the zinc component is that it even protects areas of steel not completely covered, such as cut edges, drilled holes, scratches etc. This all adds up to a signifi cantly longer service life.

ACRYLIC RESIN PROTECTIVE COAT

This coating is applied to both sides of the aluminium-zinc. This is a 1 to 2 micron fi lm of a tinted acrylic applied immediately after the application of the aluminium-zinc coatings. It provides a uniform substrate that enhances adhesion of the basecoat.

BASECOAT

The basecoat is specially formulated high-build paint, based on a custom designed 100% acrylic resin binder. The basecoat serves two functions. The fi rst is to bond the chip which forms the decorative layer, onto the tile. The second is to protect the underlying layer from water and UV radiation. The basecoat also contains an algicide which inhibits growth of algae and lichen on the roof. The algicide is selected to be as effective as possible in retarding the growth of these organisms, while still keeping water collected from the roof safe for drinking and other purposes.

CHIP

A layer of stone chip is applied to provide an attractive textured fi nish and at the same time enhance resistance to UV radiation. The chip is sized and applied in such a way as to ensure virtually 100% cover of the basecoat. Samples have shown over 30 years exposure life without colour change.

Where colours are required other than the limited range of natural colours, the same durable natural rock is ceramic coated using heat resistant and UV stable pigments.

OVERGLAZE

The fi nal coat is an acrylic overglaze which improves the appearance giving a clear gloss fi nish to the chip and increases the resistance to physical damage.

LONG LIFETIME

Zincalume® coated steel has superior long term corrosion resistance. The combination of the sacrifi cial protection of zinc with the barrier protection of aluminium provides superior performance to galvanized coatings in almost all environments.

WIND AND STORM RESISTANCE

Gerard tiles are installed using our unique horizontal fi xing system. Each tile is interlocked and then secularly fastened horizontally at 8 different points. This method prevents any leakage and ensures

that each tile remains in place in extremely high winds, hurricanes and typhoons. It also provides security from heavy rain and heavy snowfall.

Other roofi ng products use a vertical fi xing method or rely on the weight of the tile to hold them in place. This presents an increased danger of tiles lifting in high winds.

LIGHTWEIGHT

Clay and concrete roof tiles weigh up to 7 times more than the equivalent lightweight Gerard Roof area. This means substantial savings can be achieve in the structural costs.

EARTHQUAKE RESISTANCE

Gerard Roofs’ lightweight interlocking tiles and unique fastening system provide added strength to the roof in the event of an earthquake. There are documented instances of other heavyweight roofi ng products collapsing homes while Gerard Roofs in the same street remained intact and with minimal damage.

SNOW AND ICE

In extreme winter conditions Gerard roofs withstand snow loading, when exposed to snow, frost or ice there is no degradation to the surface coatings or substrate.

The rough texture of the chip coated surface holds the snow in place until the snow melts naturally and harmlessly.

HAIL RESISTANCE

Gerard roofs are resistant to damage from hail stones up to 30mm. A hail stone as large as 90mm may cause some indentations however does not penetrate the surface coating or substrate, maintaining the roof’s weather security.

Page 72: AHI Gerard Inspiration Europe

72

T E C H N I C A LFIRE RESISTANCE

Gerard Roofs have passed stringent International fi re tests. The incombustible steel substrate and surface coating eliminates spread of fl ame when exposed to fi re.

The lightweight nature of a Gerard Roofs’ roof considerably reduces the potential for the roof to collapse.

NOISE

The chip coated fi nish and interlocking tile system of Gerard Roofs minimises the transmission of sound.

DRINKING WATER

Rainwater collected from Gerard Roofs has been tested and meets the World Health Organisation’s criteria for drinking water quality. Two good rainfalls are recommended before collecting drinking water from a new roof.

MANUFACTURED TO INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

AHI Roofi ng is registered to ISO9001 which recognises the quality management systems standards now accepted in more than 150 countries around the world.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

AHI Roofi ng Limited is justifi ably proud of its reputation as the world’s leading manufacturer of top quality, chip-coated, pressed metal roofi ng tiles, which are produced in one of the cleanest and most pollution free environments in the world. Steel is manufactured in a unique process by New Zealand Steel from black iron sand, found on the West Coast beaches of the North Island. The steel is coated with zinc/aluminium alloy (Zincalume®).

PAINT & BASECOAT

The main component of our paint system is acrylic resin, produced in New Zealand. All our coatings are water-based or water dispersed. The “chip” used to coat are textured roofi ng tiles is crushed natural rock quarried in New Zealand.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

The signifi cant part of energy used is derived from hydro power. Air and water emissions comply with all New Zealand’s environmental regulations.

Our packaging materials consist of cardboard wraps and pallets from sustainable forests and could be recycled for further use. The plastic wraps are derived from petrochemical sources and can also be recycled.

The installation process uses no processes which emit heat or fumes and most of the process is manual.

DISPSOAL/RECYCLING

The product on the roof emits no fumes or water-based emissions

and degrades very slowly over a number of decades. Providing the

product is correctly installed to our specifi cations, we confi dently

give a 50 Year Limited Warranty. The ultimate disposal of steel

roofi ng is by recycling in steel recovery plants and processing into

new steel products.

RAINWATER RUN-OFF

The effect of roofi ng materials on the quality of rainwater run-off

is of major importance. Property owners can collect rainwater in

large tanks for domestic and agricultural use. We have carried out

tests which clearly showed that rainwater run-off was well within

WHO (World Health Organisation) guidelines.

HEALTH & SAFETY

The safety and well being of employees is of major consideration

to AHI Roofi ng, and Health and Safety initiatives are in place

throughout out factories.
