TheAHDBEducationWorkingGrouphasworkedtogetherto identifyopportunitiestoundertake jointAHDBactivityrelatingtoagriculture,foodandnutrition,withtheaimofimplementingajointstrategyfrom2012.
TheresearchcarriedoutontheexternalandinternalenvironmenthasbeensummarisedinasituationanalysisfortheAHDBEducationStrategy.
1.1 Macro environment
ThekeyexternalfactorsthatinfluencetheenvironmentoftheAHDBEducationactivitiesareprimarilyschoolsandthecurriculum.

Themaintargetaudiencesfortheeducationprogrammesareprimaryandsecondaryschools.However,itwasfoundthat54%oftheprogrammesaboutfoodandfarmingalsoprovideeducationalinformationandactivitiesforconsumers.
Thedeliverymethodvariesacrosstheprogrammes.Ashighlightedinthechartbelowthemaindeliveryrouteisviatheinternetwithwebsitesthathostinformationandresources.Followingthis,regionalcoordinators,farmersanddirectmailareusedbyabouthalfoftheeducationprogrammestoreachtheirtargetaudience.

Themajorityoftheprogrammesaresupportedthroughavarietyoffundsraisedbycharities,sponsorship,governmentandmemberships.
In addition to non-commercial initiatives there are a considerable number of education programmes funded bycommercialorganisations.Forexample,Flora’sCookingwithSchoolsprovided£440,000worthofcookingequipmentto13,000schoolsandMorrison’sLet’sGrowcampaigncurrentlyhasreached24,500schoolssinceitwasintroduced.Others includeDanone –Eat LikeAChamp, Sainsbury’sActiveKids andActiveKidsGetCooking andKellogg’sBreakfastClubs.
1.2 Macro environment
TheAHDBdivisionaleducationprogrammeshaverelationshipswithexternalorganisationsonbothanindividualandcollectivearrangement,whetheritispartnership,membershiporsponsorship.Moredetailsonthecurrentrelationshipsareoutlinedbelow:
British Nutrition Foundation TheAHDBdivisionshavefinanciallysupportedtheBritishNutritionFoundation’s(BNF)Food–afactoflifeprogrammealongsidetheAllSaintsEducationTrustsinceitwaslaunchedin2005.Overthecourseoftheprogramme,avarietyofactivitieshavebeendeliveredtoaidteachingabouthealthyeating,cooking,foodandfarmingfor3to16yearolds.Thewebsitehascontinuedtogrowandiscurrentlyreceivingjustfewerthan2.7millionhitsamonth.
Farming and Countryside Education FACEaimstoeducatechildrenandyoungpeopleaboutfoodandfarminginasustainablecountryside,byprovidingeducationresourcesandfarmertrainingtohostschoolvisitsthroughregionalco-ordinatorsinEnglandandWales.InthepastDairyCo,PotatoCouncil,MeatEducationandHGCAwerepartnermembersofthecharity.In2011ajointAHDBmembershiphasbeenputinplace.
Royal Highland Education Trust RHETprovidesopportunitiesthroughregionalco-ordinatorsforchildreninScotlandtolearnaboutfood,farmingandthecountryside.DairyCo,HGCAandthePotatoCouncilworkcloselywithRHETinavarietyofways.RHETpromotesHGCA’sFarmhouseBreakfastWeekinschoolsandHGCAsponsorsagrainrelatedactivityattheRoyalHighlandShow.DairyCohelpstoco-fundregionalactivitytosupportdairyfarmersandschoolsinScotland.
Design and Technology Association BPEX,EBLEXandHGCAhavecorporatemembershipwithDATAforsupportandadviceonFoodTechnologyinschools
Meat Promotion Wales TheMeatEducationprogrammepartnerswiththemeatindustrysuchasMeatPromotionWales.
National Association of British and Irish Millers
HGCAhasworkedcloselyinpartnershipwithnabimsince2001ondevelopinganddeliveringtheGrainChaineducationprogramme.
Bangor University HDChasprovidedpump-primingandtransitionalfundingfortheFoodDudesprogrammeatBangorUniversity.FoodDudesistheonlybehaviourchangeprogrammeknowntopermanentlyincreasethefruitandvegetableconsumptionofparticipantsandthereforeshouldhelpstimulatealong-termincreaseindemandforfreshproduce.ManagementofFoodDudeswasrecentlyhandedbacktoBangorUniversity,whereitisnowbeingrolledouttoprimaryschoolsinEnglandandWales,fundeddirectlybyLAs/PCTs/schools.

4.0. TacticsAsdetailedinthesituationanalysisandAnnexC,eachAHDBdivisionhasitsowneducationprogramme.Thetacticsdetailed below are designed to complement the divisional programmes and create synergies.The funding for theactivitieswillcomefromthedivision’sbudget.
4.1 Short term (1 year)
Tostarttodeliveragainstthelongtermobjectives,thefirstyearofactivitywillfocusonbuildingasolidfoundationfortheGroup’sworkwiththefollowingactivities:

AHDB Education Working Group consists of members from the individual AHDB divisions with an interest ineducating children and young people. TheGroupmeets at aminimum on a quarterly basis andmore frequentlywhenneeded.

Potato Council Education
PotatoCouncileducationseekstoinfluencetheconsumersofthefutureaboutthehealthbenefitsofpotatoesintheirdiet,withanaimtodeveloping‘lifelong’eatinghabits,throughschoollearning.
Bymakingadifferencetothewaychildrenviewfoodatayoungage,wecanhelpshapehealthyeatinghabitsthatwillstaywiththemastheygrow.Schoollearningisaperfectwayofteachingpupilspotatoknowledgetheywouldn’tnormallyreceive,whichformsalongtermrelationshipwiththepotato.
Wehavetwoschoolinitiatives,GrowYourOwnPotatoes(GYOP)forprimaryschoolpupils(KS1&2)andCookYourOwnPotatoes(CYOP)forsecondaryschoolpupils(KS3).Botharebackedbycomprehensivewebsites,whereschoolscangetadvice,supportanddownloadableresources,coveringgrowing,knowing,healthyeatingandcookingpotatoes.

Launched in 2005, GYOP was the firstmajorprimaryschoolbasedgrowingproject.Sincethen, ithasbecomeoneofthelargestof itskind,withwellover 1 million children participatingsofar.Theylearnwherepotatoescomefrom,howtheygrowand thattheyareahealthyfood.ItssimplicityandthefactthatGYOPisapracticalactivity thatmakesitperfectforyoungpupils. They are given the opportunity to plant and harvesttheirowncropsusingseeds, grow bags and online resources supplied to themfreeofcharge.

DairyCo Schools and Education Programme

Throughout the year DairyCo also provides resources for school events, educational access visits ondairy farms and agricultural country shows across Great Britain. Make it with Mince Challenge
TheRedTractorbeefandlamb‘MakeitwithMinceChallenge’ ledbycelebritychefJamesMartin,isnowinitssixthyear.ItwaslaunchedbyEBLEXtoengage,educateand inspirestudents inKeyStages3and4 togethands-oncookingexperienceandappreciate the importance
of good nutrition, quality ingredientsand understanding where their foodcomesfrom.
The Challenge, which is open to allstudents and secondary schoolsin England, is well-suited to theGCSE Food Technology curriculum.It requires students to design andsubmittheirownoriginalrecipesusingRedTractorbeeforlambmince.Studentsbetweentheagesof11and16canenterasindividualsorsubmitentriesviatheirFoodTechnologyteachersandschools.PupilsdonotneedtobestudyingtheFoodTechnologycurriculumiftheywishtoenterindividuallyintheirsparetime.Thecompetitionispromotedtobothteachersandpupilsthroughaheavy-weightPR,advertisingandsocialmediaprogramme.
Thecompetitionaimstodemonstratetheeaseandversatilityofcookingwithbeefandlambmince.Whetherit’saddinganewtwisttoanoldclassicorcreatingsomethingtotallynew,allrecipesmustbedevelopedandcookedfromscratch.Thebestentriesareinvitedtoregionalcook-offfinalsinNovemberjudgedbyJamesMartinandEBLEX’sFoodAdvisor.Thenationalchampionisawardedamoney-can’t-buyprize,whichincludesabehind-the-scenesvisit tothefilmingof‘SaturdayKitchen’,thechancetoworkinatopLondonrestaurantanddinnerwithJamesataMichelinstarrestaurant.
