Professional Profile For the past seven years, I have worked in a variety of educational positions as a private tutor for high school students in the critical reading, writing skills, and essay-writing portions of the SAT; as a reading development specialist, focusing upon phonics, basic and advanced reading, speed reading, comprehension, and note-taking for all grade levels from kindergarten to eleventh grade at the Institute of Reading Development; and as a teacher in my own classroom, where for six years now Ive been responsible for creating and implementing the Junior High Language Arts & Literature program at Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Oxnard, California. I have moderated or co-moderated a number of extracurricular activities, including the Junior High Academic Decathlon, the Lectors Club, the school Spelling Bee, the annual Graduation Luncheon, and a number of different field trips. Ive been given much freedom to develop my own curricular program, and this has allowed me to individualize my plans and set my pace according to the needs and interests of my students. I create lessons that are culturally diverse and socially relevant, geared toward the practical application of the skills taught in class to my students real-life experiences and needs. I received a liberal arts education at Thomas Aquinas College in 2009. The Socratic Method was employed in all my classes and did much to form my critical thinking and reasoning abilities skills I endeavor to teach my own students as we work through the curricula. In the spring of 2013, I completed a Masters program in Education and earned a preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential in English at Loyola Marymount University. I will clear my credential in a one-year program through the Ventura County Office of Education in the fall of 2015. Students generally improve by about 100 points on the SAT after working with me. Commuted to various locations throughout Orange County that hosted the program and managed classrooms therein, teaching reading comprehension and fluency skills, reading speed, phonics, vocabulary, and note-taking skills. For grades 1-4, assessed children weekly to provide parents with an appropriate level of difficulty for their childs reading practice. For grades 6-11, assessed students reading speed and comprehension and guided them to the appropriate level of difficulty in their reading. Developed and maintained excellent relationships with the parents; was able to successfully accommodate students needs and maintained a high satisfaction rate among parents and students alike. Coach the students in whatever subject parents/teachers are unavailable to coach. 9 Attend and serve as a testing proctor at the Annual Decathlon in March at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Annual Graduation Luncheon, Our Lady of Guadalupe School 10 Plan and moderate the yearly Graduation Luncheon, which involves the acquisition and organization of food, decorations, and music, and gifts, and includes the delegation of set up, service, and break-down services. 11 This luncheon is hosted by my homeroom class, the 7th grade, in honor of the graduation 8th grade class. WCEA Accreditation Committee, Sacred Heart School 12 Volunteered to serve on a WASC committee in February of 2014 for a local Catholic school in Ventura County. 13 This enrichment opportunity provided valuable insight into the workings of a Catholic school independent of my own and gave me the chance to weigh the consequences of different structural and pedagogical choices within a school of a comparable ethnic and socio-economic makeup.
