Ah-Ah-Ah- Choo!

Submitted by Sharon Roppel, Volunteer Gardener

Sneezing? Runny nose? Itchy eyes? You may suffer from HAY FEVER, an allergic reaction in spring and fall to AIRBORNE particles, such as POLLENS and moulds.

Goldenrod is commonly – and wrongly – blamed for causing hay fever. It is RAGWEED – which blooms in late summer alongwith goldenrod – that is the culprit.

WHY?The explanation may “blow your mind”! Ragweed pollen is light and spread by the wind. Only a few ragweed pollen grainsare needed to trigger a reaction. ONE ragweed plant can produce ONE BILLION pollen grains in ONE season! Ragweedpollen can remain airborne for days and travel hundreds of kilometres, including out to sea and up in space! However, goldenrod pollen is too heavy and sticky to become airborne. It is pollinated by bees and butterflies who find it a delicious source of nectar.

HERE’S ANOTHER IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE !Goldenrod is easily identified by its conical clusters of bright yellow, showy flowers. Ragweed flowers, on the other hand, aretiny, green or tan or yellow, and they grow along spikes. They also face downward – no doubt ashamed by the misery they inflict on humans!

GOOD NEWS• The gardens at the BCM&CC are dotted with goldenrod, not ragweed.• During high humidity, ragweed pollen clumps and is not likely to become airborne.
