CATCH A GLIMPSE INSIDE ONE OF THE MANY KIWI FARMS USING AGRIMAT EVERY DAY.

Edward Simpkin

Sadly, most people spend a lot of those walking miles at work. Even worse, this is often on concrete floors with lots of standing time. Walking and standing is an integral part of the job for many people including milking cows.

This by itself can be downright painful. Add a previous foot injury, sore muscles and lower back pain and it can make standard chores (such as milking) a considerable burden.

Standing on concrete hurts because it is basically a battle against gravity. When standing your body is continually pulled by the force of gravity, to maintain your position, your body must supply counteracting forces to maintain an equilibrium. This means your muscles are constantly tensed, which results in a static stress situation. Director of ergonomics, Dan MacLeod put it this way “the human does not tolerate well standing on a hard surface. It’s fatiguing and hard on the feet and spinal column”

Don’t forget we only have one pair of legs and one back – so please take care.

At Numat we often hear one complaint, that is “I wish I had put a mat in the pit years ago”

We do enjoy the favourable positive feedback after they have used it though, your welcome to join them, it’s never been easier.

See you on the farm, Edward.

Pit mat installation Eliot Cooper, Central Hawkes Bay

Herd size: 600

Product: Agrimat Comfortzone

A Central Hawkes Bay dairy farmer Eliot Cooper says purchasing AgriMat ComfortZone foam pit-mat flooring from Numat for his 30-aside herringbone cowshed has been a great investment.

“In terms of bang for buck it’s some of the best money I’ve spent in years. This product is so good I think it should be mandatory in every herringbone cowshed.”

Eliot was impressed with the pit-mats at last year’s Fieldays, and had them installed in his cowshed by springtime. He says the benefits of the mats to his 600 cow operation have been greater than expected. “The pit-mats provide a far more comfortable work environment for my four staff than walking around in gumboots on concrete floors. The feedback from them has been great. They all love the mats and reckon it’s like working on a sports turf.” Eliot says productivity in the shed has increased, with around 10 to 15 minutes taken off each milking time thanks to the soft-cushioning of the mats, which ease foot, leg and back pressure on the staff. “The team are as fresh when they’re milking the last row of cows as they were milking the first. They are able to move so much freer on the matting and can stand up for far longer than on the cold concrete.” As an employer, Eliot appreciates the improvements to the health and safety of his team since installing the product. “The soft mats create a warmer, quieter environment. They also have anti-slip features for improved safety. This makes them attractive from an OSH perspective.” He says cleaning up is a breeze with just a simple hose-down required. The mats have also stood up well to dairy shed detergents and chemicals, he adds. The AgriMat ComfortZone EVA matting is available in a range of colours.

Pit mat installation Peter marwood, te Awamutu

Product: Agrimat Ergomat

Dairy farmer Peter Marwood says he discovered Numat Agrimat at the Mystery Creek Field Days and decided to install the Ergomat in the pitmat of his shed and also in his daughter’s horse stable.

He says: “I liked the idea of a softer walking surface in the pitmat for the benefit to myself as the milker. It was installed in June 2013 and I quickly noticed a reduction in leg fatigue come the end of the day, particularly summer time when I usually tend to get achy feet and legs from the heat. It’s also a lot quieter in the shed; there’s no loud clattering and banging if the cups fall off the platform and no damage done to them, either.”

Peter also decided the matting was a better alternative to wood chip in his horse stables. “It’s a bit of a process

cleaning out a stable laid with wood chip and the horse would tend to play in the

stuff and get his chaff dirty, too. All that’s a thing of the past now

with the matting down.

“I would have no hesitation recommending AgriMat to other

dairy farmers, it’s an excellent product,” he says.
