TRUST

PARTNERSHIP

Van Hall Larenstein is a unique university of applied sciences. The educational programme at Van Hall Larenstein is Competence based. Teaching

and learning is based on applying theoretical concepts in practical context and real life situations. Because of our combination of 'Dutch' and 'Indian'

knowledge, our connections with the international work field, our educational system and our ambition to contribute to our domains, we are

running joint 2+2 and 3+1 cooperation international programmes. This partnership is based on a 4-year Bachelor's programme that is followed in

two countries. Students will study the first two or three years at the university/institute in their home country, ending up with the knowledge and

skills required to enrol on the VHL course. Students, then study in the Netherlands to follow the 2-years or the last year, final phase of the Bachelor's

programme. After graduating from VHL, these international graduates can do jobs and start their professional international careers, or pursue

academic careers by enrolling on M.Sc. programmes at Wageningen University or elsewhere.

The first VHL partnership programmes were initiated in China in 2000. Together with China Agricultural University (CAU) and Yunnan Agricultural

University (YAU), VHL worked with companies in the vicinity of Beijing and Kunming, on improving the Horticulture and Agribusiness sector. Our

interaction with these companies – most of which were involved in importing from and/or exporting to the Netherlands, or had a connection with a

Dutch company revealed that there was a demand for professional and highly skilled staff. This led us to launch our 2+2 programmes also in other

countries: Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey and now in India.

FOR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURE (B.SC. AGRI)

INTERNATIONAL HORTICULTURE & MARKETING SPECIALIZATION

SPECIALIZATIONS AT VHL

All over the world, the trade in horticultural products is not only expanding fast, it is also becoming increasingly complex. For instance, some

international companies are moving their production to wherever cultivation and economic conditions are best - while maintaining the

elaborate logistics of their home markets.

Similarly, the flowers, plants, fruit and vegetables imported into Europe, North America and Japan are now subjected to ever-stricter quality

controls. The Netherlands is a country that exports half of its agricultural output, yet its supermarket shelves are full of foreign products.

This changing context means there is a growing need for professionals with a full understanding of the horticultural chain - people who can

base their decisions on sound analyses of complex situations.

If students want to specialise in a specific subject, related to a specific sector, they can use their minor (also possible at Wageningen

University) and their thesis assignment to focus on this subject.

In the end they will receive a VHL Bachelor in Agribusiness and Business Administration with a specialisation in International Horticulture

and Marketing. In the 3+1 programme, students also receive a B.Sc.(Agri). degree of the Mahatma Phule Agriculture University Rahuri, MS,

India.

As graduate, students are ready for staff management and advisory positions in the first stages of horticultural value chains. The utmost

unique selling point is the ability to have a role in both supply and demand chains all over the world. They have solid technical knowledge

regarding horticultural products and cultivation. In addition, they are aware of market requirements and are able to create and utilize market

opportunities, whether it is in a local or in a global setting. Graduates of VHL can have a leading role in product or process innovations in

horticultural chains as well.

09

INTERNATIONAL AGRIBUSINESS AND TRADE SPECIALIZATION

As the scale of the global economy increases, organising and regulating international trade becomes increasingly complex - especially in the

food and agricultural sectors, where major changes are now taking place. This is a fascinating sector, where you consistently have to ensure

the best possible match between products and target group.

The programme focuses on trade, management and consultancy activities of businesses in the horticulture and food chains: purchasing and

sales, import and export, production and logistics, marketing and quality management, transport and storage.

In the end they will receive a VHL Bachelor in Agribusiness and Business Administration with a specialisation International Agribusiness and

Trade. In the 3+1 programme, students will also receive B.Sc.(Agri). degree of the Mahatma Phule Agriculture University Rahuri, MS, India.

IAT professionals are eligible for a range of careers related to the trade in agricultural inputs and products. Our graduates work all over the

world and in all kinds of companies and organizations. They feel confident working within various cultural environment as traders,

commercial and marketing managers, import and export managers, account and sales manager.

If you choose this programme even in the beginning of your career, you might work as a junior manager for a company exporting owers to

the far East. Or you might become an account manager at a food-processing company in Spain, or conduct market research for a soft drinks

company in Eastern Europe. Later in your career, you are likely to become a senior manager or to start your own company. For example, you

might become the owner-manager of a company exporting exotic fruits to Europe, or work as a senior advisor in the cut- owner sector.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS FROM CHINA

11

“The two years studying at Van Hall Larenstein was a big challenge for me, especially to begin with. But looking back, it really helped to

improve my job-related skills. During my studies, I also got to travel around Europe. I experienced many different cultures both while

travelling and during my studies. I learned a lot from that, and it opened up my view on the world.

I now work for Shanghai Flower port – which is one of the biggest horticultural industries in China. I'm mainly focused on marketing and

management. I am doing the Anthurium growing and post-harvest contents research.“

SHENYelei, started in2002

“My Bachelor's major at VHL was in International Agribusiness and Trade. At CAU, I ful lled the IELTS requirement and acquired knowledge of

organizational management, economics, finance, and so on. However, studying at VHL was a whole new experience for me. At the beginning

of each term, we were given a business project to do, and all the theoretical and practical lessons were related to the project. In order to

successfully conduct the project, we had to get a deep understanding of every subject offered – and this made the study more interesting and

effective.

I did my thesis project for EnzaZaden BV, a Dutch seed company. I did desk market research and eld market research – which included travel

to China – in order to complete the project

The whole Bachelor's programme was aimed at preparing me for my future career and teaching me how to be a professional businesswoman.

After completing my Bachelor's, I realized that I am keen on marketing subjects, so, I

decided to do a Master's in Management, Economics & Consumer Behaviour at Wageningen University, the Netherlands.“
