Welcome to the third edition for 2020. We are back trialling with competitions at

ADCSA in July and September along with the Riverland for those who braved the windy

weather to travel for the weekend. This issue features coverage of all three events with

our club members achievements highlighted at the latter two.

Competitions are now starting to be listed at other Adelaide based clubs in the next cou-

ple of months and its starting to look positive again (provided restrictions continue to

ease)

Please continue to like and share our social media pages to dog related pages along

with our promo video that was produced by Live Stream Australia—it was created from

scratch as there was nothing similar online

Our next trial is scheduled for the end of November (details in Trial Diary last page) and

is likely to be the final SA agility event for the year—as always if you are not competing

but would like to attend you are welcome and if you would like to volunteer even for a

class or two let the trial manager or committee know.

Don’t forget as of the start of October you can pay your annual fee taking your member-

ship to the end of 2021.

The AGM is also scheduled for the end of October and if you have the spare time and

would like to participate in running the club (you get discounted membership and re-

served car parking on trial days) you are welcome to nominate. Even if you are in your

first year of training (I was when I joined the committee) your skills & talents would be

appreciated.

We also have to continue to try and get Agility recognized as not just a ‘dog training

thing’ but a sport with the general community. ADCSA is starting to get displays at com-

munity events and we will continue to try and increase media coverage. Other high

speed dog sports focus on the dogs running at speed (eg Flyball, Lure Coursing even

retrieving for gun dogs) but our sport involves owners and handlers also having to have

a fair degree of fitness to keep up with their dogs working around the course as a team.

Another successful Trial was held on Saturday September 5, 2020.

The only dampener we had for the day was the cloudburst while we were trying to set up. However, it settled the dust, watered the grounds and the raffle tickets.

The winning qualifiers in the Novice Classes received a DVD “Building the Canine Athlete” by Dr Chris Zink and Dr Laurie McCauley, two renowned Sports Medicine veterinarians from the USA.

We are again pleased to welcome the following new members:

Melissa Anderson & Stephanie Morris with Kenia, Ollie & Rua; Sharon Bills with Willow; Andrew & Helena Bischoff with Peppa; Jude Bolton with Bodie; Ron Butler with Ben; Jeremy Ellis with Broc; Emilia Jaworek with Ari; Vicky Jobber with Cobber; Ellen Orlova with Bernie; Emma Panigas with Maisie; Suzanne Robson with Gemma; Verena Shields with Vinny; Karen & Emmeline Virgo with Ma-ple & Hazel; Matthew Wall with Daisy.

I hope you are all progressing with your training and both of you are enjoying it.

Coming events: Thursday, October 29th, 2020 ADCSA AGM

Time: 8:00 PM After the First Training Session

& before the 2nd Session

Membership Renewals: Are due from November 30

However, if you renew in October you could save; should there be a fee increase approved at the AGM.

Twilight Trial: Saturday November 21, 2020 Agility & Jumping Trial

Your Committee

The ADCSA Committee has been working hard, meeting the challenges posed by COVID-19 and pro-

moting and growing our club through what has been a challenging year.

Prior to the COVID shutdown in March 2020, ADCSA had 22 participating members. We have now

grown to 57 members, with more on the way through our Come’n’Try sessions. Attendance at our

weekly training sessions has been exceeding 35 people in recent weeks.

Important tasks and issues addressed by the Committee in recent months include:

• Management of COVID-Safe return to training and trialling, such as:

- development of COVID-Safe plans for training sessions and conduct of agility trials;

- application to Dogs SA for approval to conduct July and September trials under COVID-

Safe precautions;

- organising COVID-Safe procedures, signage, and sanitising materials

- training COVID Marshals.

• Promotion of our club, new member intakes and Come’n’Try sessions through social and public

media to build membership following return from COVID shutdown.

• Video advertisement produced for ADCSA promoted through social media.

• Enhancement of membership database and attendance records.

• Responding to GSDCSA proposal to substantially increase grounds hire fees charged to ADCSA

and investigating alternative training venues (for discussion with members at our forthcoming

AGM).

• Continued fundraising for the purchase of new agility course equipment assisted by generous

donations of cancelled trial entry fees and raffle income.

• Rationalisation of equipment and sale of unused items.

• Child Safe Officer training completed by the Member Protection Officer and policy and proce-

dures updated to comply with new Child Protection legislation.

• Continued liaison with Sport SA, of which ADCSA is now a member, on issues of relevance to

our club.

Please consider joining our Committee if you would like to be a part of ADCSA’s continued growth

and success in 2021.

What are the rules regarding weavers at trials? When trialling always remember the dog must enter the weavers correctly and not run past the

first or second poles. If they do or enter in the second gap its considered a refusal and you must re

attempt the weavers or you will be disqualified. If you enter correctly but then make an error fur-

ther along the weavers poles its considered a fault and you will have 5 points added to the total as

you would for a dropped bar.

What handling gear should I use on my dog for training? You should only use a flat collar and a short lead for attending agility training. While many are now

using harnesses, haltis/gentle leaders, check chains, martingale collars, collars with tags etc for

obedience training or just general walking of dogs they are not appropriate for agility training. Har-

nesses restrict the movement of a dogs shoulder which is necessary to jump correctly while only

flat collars are worn for safety as dogs can and do step off the edge of equipment sometimes and a

plain flat collar reduces the low risk of the dog getting caught up on an edge. Some only use a slip

lead and have no collar when running a course. A short lead is just easier to keep the dog close be-

tween training runs and easier to put in pockets when running yourself.

What types of rewards should I use for training? Rewards usually take the form of food or toys. Some dogs love the reward of a tug toy for a brief

tug o war while others love food. As agility is off lead and as the grounds are used for other train-

ing as well as public access during the week you should try and find a high value treat /toy to help

keep your dog focused on you and the sequence that you are working on. The important thing to

remember when using treats is that you must be mindful of other handlers and dogs—if you use

food to coax a dog into the tunnel or over a jump make sure your dog finds all the treats given (or

remove them yourself) . If you leave excess food around it can affect others training as dogs get

rewarded by smelling and finding dropped food treats. Especially as the later class will use the

same sequences as they will be preparing for trials and no matter how well trained a dog is if there

is a dropped piece of fritz, sausage, etc they are likely to stop in their tracks (or even drop their

head at the smell and crash through an obstacle ).

If I decide to start trialling should I start with only jumping or both jumping

and agility? The answer comes down to if you think your dog is ready to do contacts and weaving it may be

worth entering in both classes and seeing how you go. Jumping tends to be faster and forward

flowing whereas agility tends to be slightly slower as you pause briefly for the A frame, slow down

for the dog walk and weaving. Some dogs may find agility slightly easier as the jumps are broken

up with other equipment aside from tunnels. There are also games trials where you work with a

partner in Strategic Pairs or ‘make your own course’ Gamblers and Snooker and knocking down

jumps or errors result in time penalties or loss of points so there is a little leeway not instant non

qualifying

After the first competition for the year was cancelled due to lockdown measures merely days before the event the competition was the first held since November 2019. Junior member of ADCSA 14yo Tia Vuaran and Della had an amazing day winning the morning Novice 500 Jumping class and Novice 500 Agility class (the only team to go clear) while being placed second in the afternoon Novice 500 Jumping class. Karen Moralee who was debuting her young dog Wattavue Amelia Joy went clear and won both the morning and afternoon Novice 400 Jumping classes.
