My appreciation for dog agility has skyrocketed over the past year, as my increased exposure has allowed me to witness the diverse attributes that draw enthusiasts of every age to the sport. Agility proves to be a wonderful form of exercise for both owners & their companion dogs. From practicing a skill to running a course, one’s limbs & heart are not the only parts of the body receiving a great workout; rather, agility is the perfect sport for your mind, as handlers must work to memorize courses and accurately direct and signal their dog. The varieties of verbal & nonverbal communication taking place are exhilarating to observe. From the stands you’ll see performance art ranging from dogs floating over jumps & speeding through weave poles to best friends blissfully trotting along or running at top speed. From the novice handler & their canine partner, to the honed performers, to the pair that continue their love of the sport as one or both have matured with time… the bond and dedication shown in the ring is something to admire and adore… and the door is open to every dog, as purebreds, mixed breeds and rescues all excel at agility. Since launching agility classes at The Center at Animal Humane last November, our trainers have provided instruction to nearly 90 students in our first six months. Many of our students are local, but others travel from Santa Fe, Taos, Alamogordo, and even Durango, Colorado. Watching and listening to our accomplished agility instructors is a joy, as they masterfully provide tailored lessons for each handler-dog pair to introduce them to agility, strengthen the bond between them and celebrate their dual performances; and our students are exuberantly expressing their gratitude for the instruction as well as our new training space. AnimalHumaneNM.org Volume 48, Number 2 Summer 2017 Alan Hann, current student at The Center: “The Center is a great facility with wonderful instructors. It brings an essence of humor to everyday life, as anything can happen in the ring and nothing is more satisfying than when you perform your best and your dog is part of a beautifully choreographed routine. You’ll see dogs do happy dances once they finish and everyone is cheering for you… and this comradery is a wonderful side effect that I did not expect. I’ve met teachers, lawyers, plumbers, orthopedic surgeons and ranchers. No one cares what you do or have; rather, everyone is happy for your success.” MaryMac Gardner, current student at The Center: “Agility is a good way to stay young as you have to run, think & speak… all at the same time… quickly. Who needs a crossword puzzle, when you have an ever- changing course to traverse after only 8 minutes of walking it to determine where you’ll cue your pet. And much like yoga, you need not compare yourself to others, as our skilled instructors give each handler techniques unique to them & their dog.” MaryMac shares that The Center has the best footing in town and fellow students are friendly & supportive and that they have a lot of fun at practice, local trials, and when traveling to regional competitions together. As a 20-year agility enthusiast, her advice is to focus on your achievements as they come and have fun with your dog. Dogs care about playing the game with their human, not about winning, ribbons, or titles. “Any dog can do it, as long as they like it. Beginning lessons focus on you playing with your pet & having them discover that you are more interesting than anything else and that the two of you always have a great time together. With their focus comes increased confidence as well as excellent manners and recall,” says MaryMac. And that’s the beautiful world of agility at The Center. It's chess meets cardio with humor & camaraderie thrown into the mix. And this fastest growing dog sport, along with instruction in competitive obedience, clicker training & core work coming soon, are our latest layers of training and resources offered for pets and their people… all generating valuable revenue to sustain our services & programs that serve thousands.

We are grateful to our new students at The Center and the passion our instructors share with each of them. We are equally thankful to you — our donors — whose support allows our shelter to evolve so that we may continue to help people find, keep and increase their bonds with their pets to live happy & healthy lives together.

Our fields are merely half of Phase I construction at The Center, with our new 2,380 square-foot Training Building, offering diverse instruction and coming online this summer, being the other important part.

With a recent award of a $50,000 grant from the Petco Foundation, we are pleased to announce that we’ve secured 65% of our $2M fundraising goal. We would be honored to discuss the remaining naming opportunities with you. To learn more about and tour Phases II & III in the making, please contact Donna M. Max's storyImagine the pain of not being able to pay for life-saving care for a beloved pet.

When Harrison Wirstrom and Jonathan Rosocha brought their cat Max to our Donor-subsidized Veterinary Clinic, they were desperate to find him treatment they could afford. “We came with $50 because that is all we had,” says Harrison.

While searching for a feline companion, Harrison and Jonathan had looked at every cat available for adoption at the city’s Animal Welfare Department (AWD). Jonathan remembers, “Of all the cats, Max came up to me and put his paw against the window.” Max, who was just a few months old, had made his choice. The three went home to begin their new family life together.

Max quickly felt confident in his new home where he likes to run and play fetch. A few months later, Harrison went out to buy cat food and came home to find that Max was limping. Jonathan had seen him jump from the sofa to a windowsill, injuring his paw in the process. They decided to wait a few days and see if he recovered on his own.

As the days went by without any improvement, Harrison and Jonathan realized Max needed professional attention, but they had no money. Jonathan remembers, “It was heartbreaking to see him in pain.”

They called AWD who referred them to Animal Humane New Mexico’s Donor-subsidized Veterinary Clinic. Max, it turned out, had sustained a greenstick, or hairline fracture. While the injury didn’t require surgery, there were X-rays, casting and follow-up appointments, which Harrison and Jonathan could not afford. Our Clinic Team recommended Max for Animal Humane’s Pet Save Fund, our donor-supported fund that helps low-income families keep their pets by paying for veterinary care they otherwise would not be able to afford. Pet Save also benefits our shelter pets who need surgery or treatment to ready them for adoption into a loving home.

Jonathan and Harrison were incredibly relieved. Harrison admits, “If we couldn’t obtain treatment for Max we would have relinquished him, especially if that was his only chance to receive the treatment he needed.” Thanks to Pet Save, this family was able to stay together.

Max is fully recovered and recently celebrated his first birthday. “He is one lucky cat,” Harrison says. They agree it meant the world to them that they were able to treat Max thanks to our generous Pet Save donors.

Pet Save: healthier pets and loving families kept together

Chaco’s storyLike most pets, when Chaco came to our shelter, we didn’t know where he had been. What

was his puppyhood like? Did he enjoy a life of tenderness and fun with a mother and litter

mates? Did he have toys and a warm place to sleep at night? We saw a sweet, playful 2-year-

old Rottweiler before us, but his body told a story of physical trauma and pain.

Chaco had an old injury to his left eye, his right hip, as well as his left front and right hind

paws. We saw evidence of a past procedure to remove the ball of his right hip after it had

been dislocated. He limped from the lingering pain. Radiographs revealed there was a

piece of bone spur left behind in his hip area and gunshot shrapnel in the left front paw.

Our expert Donor-subsidized Veterinary Clinic Team knew they could ease Chaco’s

pain and increase his quality of life. Pet Save, our special Clinic fund to assist pets

who need medical care, made it possible for us to help Chaco receive the treatment

he needed and put his painful past behind him. After corrective hip surgery and Foster

Care for recovery, Chaco was able to bear weight much better. He still had a blind eye

and a missing toe, but this did not stop him from finding a new home!

Jim and Arianne Avery moved to Albuquerque from Virginia, where they had

been involved in dog rescue for many years. “We’ve always had a house full of

dogs,” says Jim. They especially like to provide a loving home for dogs who may

require ongoing medical care.

Shortly after moving here, they lost three dogs to cancer. They had three new small

dogs in their house a year later but were looking for a big dog with a calm presence.

Arianne remembers seeing Chaco on our Facebook page and sharing the post. Their

friends knew it was a perfect match! Jim & Arianne came in to meet Chaco in person

and, as soon as they saw him, fell in love.

Chaco is not slowed down at all by his old injuries. He loves to walk, run and join the family on car trips. “He is a loyal dog,” says

Jim. “He just wants to be with us. He is a laid-back attention hog.”

Pet Save is a donor-supported fund that underwrites veterinary care for shelter pets and pets of low-income families. Pet Save helps

shelter pets become ready for adoption and supports owned pets whose families cannot afford veterinary care such as orthopedic

surgery like Chaco’s. We thank our generous donors for supporting Pet Save and making it possible for cats and dogs to find, and

keep, loving homes.

a legacy gift to Animal Humane New Mexico is truly my honorLife without my pets is unimaginable. Each day, their love and loyalty inspire me and bring me joy. Every time I come home and

walk through the door, my fur babies are always happy to see me. The pure, unconditional love they have for me washes away any tension while providing a reminder to slow down and sniff the roses. It’s the best method to unwind from a stressful day.

My first pet entered into my life when I was 2 years old. When I was 8, we adopted our first rescue dog. Since that time, I’ve had only rescue pets in my life. Currently, my home is blessed with three dogs and one cat. My fabulous feline’s name is Busy and my dogs are Gus — who survived the horrific experience of being a bait dog in a dog-fighting ring, Port — named after the portable building I found him under in Shiprock, New Mexico, and Sunny. Until recently, my life was blessed with a fourth dog named Velvet. After enriching my world for 12 years, Ms. Velveteen Rabbit made her exit over the rainbow bridge in December.

Animal Humane is one of New Mexico’s most valuable and esteemed beacons of goodness. The many resources this amazing organization provides fill my heart with appreciation and optimism. My favorites of these include their veterinary clinic being open only to shelter residents and low-income pet parents; their veterinary care assistance for elderly pet parents on fixed incomes; their perpetual open-door pet food bank for our cherished veterans; their humane community education; and their elegant, informed approach to demystifying the ‘no-kill’ myth. I am extremely proud of the high save rate our state’s flagship nonprofit animal shelter achieves, as well as their continued growth of partnerships with other city and statewide rescue groups and shelters. Animal Humane New Mexico is a shining jewel for our state and makes our community thrive with compassion and love. Our lives are better through the outstanding work they do. For each of these reasons and more, I’m honored to leave a legacy gift to Animal Humane New Mexico in my Will.

2016 volunteer of the yearWe are thrilled to announce our 2016 Volunteer of the Year, long-time supporter Terri Pachelli! Many of our visitors, donors and her fellow volunteers will recognize Terri from our Main Campus, especially since she can be found helping out in one way or another most days of the week! In addition to leading two of our phenomenal dog walking teams and being a fantastic new Dog Walker mentor, Terri also routinely fills in for fellow Dog Walkers who are on vacation and leads tours on our Main Campus during New Volunteer Orientations. As if that weren’t enough, she recently embraced the opportunity to assist our Volunteer Department in creating a process to evaluate the strengths of our dog walking teams, ensuring each team has what they need to provide our canine residents with the very best support.

Terri has supported our shelter for decades and joined our volunteer family in 2013. Her efforts have not only benefited countless New Mexican dogs, but with her cheerful dedication and willingness to always lend a hand she has also aided and inspired fellow volunteers. Another long-time volunteer explains perfectly why her teammates value her so very much: “If you need help, she is the go-to person.”We are truly honored to have Terri as part of our team and we thank her for her incredible commitment to New Mexico’s homeless pets!

New Mexico Humane Conference: building professional relationships to save more pets

Did you know that Animal Humane hosts the region’s largest educational conference for animal care, animal welfare & animal control professionals?

Now in its 12th year, the New Mexico Humane Conference (NMHC) attracts over 200 animal care professionals and advocates annually. Attendees come from all over New Mexico, as well as Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma and California.

“There are not a lot of educational opportunities here for people in the animal welfare field,” says Senior Director of Outreach & Volunteer Programs, and conference organizer, Ellen Schmidt. She continues, “Our conference is more intimate than large national conferences so our attendees truly appreciate the networking opportunities we provide. We’re so spread out geographically. Any time we can come together is especially valuable.”

NMHC 2017 takes place September 14-15 in Albuquerque and features tracks for animal care officers, shelter operations managers & administrators, and veterinary medicine & behavior professionals.

Ellen explains, “My goal every year is to have a combination of well-known national speakers, as well as local speakers who have so much to share about programs in their shelters.”

Our 2017 keynote speaker, B.J. Rogers, a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator and Vice President, ProLearning, ASPCA®, will present on the importance of emotional intelligence in the animal welfare field and the high-level difference emotional intelligence makes in the ever–changing field of animal welfare.

Another speaker, Lyssa MacMillan, Education & Outreach Coordinator, City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, will share their successful model for building relationships between community outreach, education, law enforcement, and animal welfare.

Drawing from our local knowledge base, Angela Stell, founder of NMDOG, will talk about rescuing dogs from especially difficult circumstances, such as animal cruelty cases or dogs who have spent years in isolation at the end of chains.

This year’s conference is made possible by a generous grant from ASPCA®. Other sponsors include RKD Alpha Dog, MWI Animal Health, Petco Foundation and Petlink.net, to name a few.

To learn more about the New Mexico Humane Conference, including a growing list of speakers, please visit NMHumaneConference.org.

PNM helps ensure a brighter future for homeless pets!

The PNM Resources Foundation has once again provided us with generous grant funding that helps our

shelter save money as well as homeless pets. Our most recent PNM Reduce Your Use Grant afforded us the

opportunity to replace the traditional, inefficient lighting in our Facilities building with new, energy efficient

LED lighting. Our talented Facilities Team, whose behind-the-scenes work is vital to our residents’ comfort

and safety, spends their days ensuring each Animal Humane location is both safe and inviting for staff,

visitors and the loveable pets in our care. With the upgraded lighting provided by the PNM Reduce Your Use

Grant, our Facilities Team can work faster and safer while keeping our environmental

pawprint small. For the past 9 years, the PNM Resources Foundation has helped pets

in need by awarding generous grant funding to our organization. We look forward to

continuing this partnership and building a brighter future for pets & people together!
