COUGARS AWAIT AGGIES IN MATINEE MATCH-UPNM State and Chicago State is set to square off at 1:05 p.m. (MT) on Saturday, Jan. 7. The Aggies won their WAC opener at UMKC, while the Cougars dropped their opener to UT Rio Grande Valley 83-64 at home. The loss pushed CSU’s losing streak to four while NM State won its 12th-straight.

New Mexico State leads the all-time series 9-1 and 3-1 when playing in the Jones Convocation Center. Its lone loss against the Cougars came on the road on Jan. 16, 2014, 86-81. The 69-55 win over Chicago State last year was the largest margin of victory for NM State on the road against the Cougars. Other margins of victory on the road were 10 and eight on top of the 86-81 loss. The Aggies have also won five-straight against the Cougars.

CSU has a pair of players averaging double-figures in Fred Sims, Jr., and Trayvon Palmer. Sims Jr. leads the way with 17.8 points per game while Palmer is averaging 14.8 points per game. Clemmye Owens V is nearly the third Cougar to average in double-figures with 9.8 points per game.

Palmer is also almost averaging a double-double with 9.5 boards per game with the next closest player averaging 4.1 boards per game in Sims Jr. Glen Burns paces the team with 38 dimes on the year while Owens V is second with 31 assists followed by 26 from Sims Jr.

Sims Jr. (41) leads a trio of players for CSU with 10-plus 3-pointers on the year while Owens V is second on the team with 27, and Palmer with 18.

AGGIES IN WAC OPENERSHeading into this week’s Western Athletic Conference opener, NM State is 16-7 all-time when playing in its first two games since the 2005-06 season.

TRAILBLAZING SEASONNM State men’s basketball head coach Paul Weir has left a mark on the Aggie history books just 16 games into his inaugural season and continues do so as the season progresses into the conference slate.

The current 12-game win-streak by the Aggies is just the second time ever that a first-year head coach has reached double-digits when it comes to a win-streak at New Mexico State. Arthur Bergman (1920-21) is the only other Aggie coach to have a win-streak of 10 or better. However, his 10-game win-streak included a forfeit victory while the team played just 11 games that season – including the forfeit victory.

DOUBLE-DOUBLESEntering its conference season, NM State is just 1-of-5 Division I teams to boast two players with five or more double-doubles. Eli Chuha and Jemerrio Jones both have five double-doubles for NM State. Other schools include UCLA (3), LIU Brooklyn (2), Memphis (2) and Texas (2).

With the 79-70 win last Friday over UTEP, the Aggies are 10-0 at home in 2016-17 and is just one game from reaching the 600 win plateau since the opening of the Pan Am Center.

Since its debut in the Pan Am Center for the 1968-69 season, NM State has gone undefeated four times, with the last perfect season at home coming in 1989-90. Heading into its 49th season at the Pan Am, NM State has only had seven season with less than 10 wins and of those seven season, the Aggies have been under .500 at home twice through 741 games.

STREAKINGNM State heads into Saturday’s contest with a 12-game winning-streak, passing last year’s mark the spanned from Jan. 14 to Feb. 13 before falling to Wichita State on Feb. 15, 71-41 on the road. The 11 wins is is tied for 4th-best in the country behind Gonzaga (15), Baylor (14), Kansas (13), Oregon (12) and UT Arlington (11) through games on Jan. 5.

NM State has only had a winning-streak of 8 or better six times in the last 20 season dating back to the 1996-97 campaign. Of those six winning-streaks, five were snapped on the road with the exception of the current streak.

Paul Weir is the first coach since Arthur Bergman (1920-21) to have an eight-game winning-streak in his first year the helm in Las Cruces. Reggie Theus is next on that list, having won 13-straight games his second year at the helm. Lou Henson also did it in his second season at the helm, however it was during his second stint as the Aggies head coach.

Reggie Theus did it in his second year in 2006-07, going 8-0 in December. Neil McCarthy also did it in 1989-90 when his team went 7-0 while legendary head coach Lou Henson did it in 1968-69. All three of those teams went on to play in the NCAA Tournament.

RPI CHECKAfter debuting at 94 in the first RPI ranking by the NCAA on Dec. 6, NM State is now sitting at No. 75, good for the highest amongst Western Athletic Conference teams through games on Jan. 2. Utah Valley, who debuted at No. 88 to lead the WAC, is now sitting at No. 202.

CHASING HISTORYHead coach Paul Weir continues to make history in his first year at the helm. The win over Arizona State was the first victory over a Power 5 team for NM State since the 2004-05 season (Northwestern, 64-61). The last time NM State defeated a Power 5 team in a true road game went even further back, 97-84 victory over USC in the Preseason NIT to open the 1994-95 season to be exact. Weir also gave NM State its first win against a Power 5 opponent in 14 tries. The Aggies were winless in their 13 previous attempts.

The win over ASU was the first for NM State against a Pac-12 foe since its 79-75 (OT2) win over Washington at home on Dec. 30, 1999.

Weir and company now chase Neil McCarthy’s 1993-94 squad that opened the year 16-1 before losing their second game. The last Aggie team to start a season 13-2 was McCarthy’s 1991-92 team that was 13-2 before dropping their next game.

Weir recently added his name to the list of six coaches who beat UTEP in their first attempt as a first-year head coach at NM State. The last coaches do it were Ken Hayes (1975-76), Lou Henson (1966-67), John Gunn (1947-48), T.R. Coffman (1927-28) and Robert Brown (1922-23). Hayes and Henson are the only two to go undefeated (2-0) in their first year at the helm against the Miners while Gunn and Coffman played four games against UTEP. Brown was the only coach before the modern era to play the Miners twice.

After his sweep of UTEP on Dec. 30, Weir also became the first coach since Ken Hayes (1975-76) to sweep the Miners in his first year at the helm. John G. Griffith (1917-18), Clarence W. Russell (1914-15) only other coaches to go undefeated against UTEP in their first year at the helm, but both only faced the Miners once.

Weir also joined his predecessor, Marvin Menzies, on the list of first-year head coaches who defeated UNM at home in their first year.

This is the second year the Aggies will take the court at the Santa Ana Star Center. Last February, nearly 2,500 fans watched New Mexico State clinch an 85-54 victory over Northern New Mexico at the neutral-site venue.

Reserved seats start at $10, with center court seats going for $20 and a limited number of courtside seats available at $50.

SHARPSHOOTING HUGGINSJunior guard Braxton Huggins has been a staple for NM State beyond the arc. He’s knocked down 17 of his last 36 shots from beyond the arc for a .472 shooting clip in his last five games - including a career-high six 3-pointers at Arizona State. The Bakersfield, Calif., product shot 83-percent from beyond the arc while draining 10-of-12 shots against Bethune-Cookman and Nicholls State earlier in the year.

AGGIES SURVIVE OT THRILLER VS. UC IRVINEWith the game tied at 74 and 2:54 left to play in overtime, Braxton Huggins and Jemerrio Jones teamed up for 12 points as the Aggies survived a pesky UC Irvine team 85-79 last Monday in the Pan American Center.

UCI (5-8) struck first in the overtime period, but was answered with a short jumper from Jones in the paint. After a miss from the Anteater’s John Edgar Jr, Huggins drained back-to-back 3-pointers followed by a nice layup from Jones that gave NM State (11-2) the 82-74 lead and 34 seconds left to play.

A three from Edgar Jr. cut the Aggie lead to 82-77 with 27 seconds remaining as UCI head coach Russell Turner immediately called the timeout. A free throw from Jermaine Haley followed by two from Huggins sealed the deal with 12 seconds remaining.

MINER DOWNBacked by Ian Baker’s 20 points, Jemerrio Jones’ third-straight double-double and Eli Chuha’s 11 points, the NM State men’s basketball team pushed its winning-streak to seven with the 79-68 win this past Tuesday night in the Don Haskins Center.

The win was also NM State’s fourth-straight win over Battle of I-10 rival UTEP (2-6). Head coach Paul Weir also became the first coach since Ken Hayes (1975-76) to beat the Miners in his first try at the helm.

Tuesday’s victory over UTEP was the first time NM State has started a season 9-2 since the 1994-95 squad did it. On top of NM State hitting team milestones, Baker scored his 1,000th career point in the Crimson and White as well.

SERIES SPLIT WITH LOBOSBehind a season-high 26 points from Ian Baker and double-doubles from Eli Chuha and Jemerrio Jones, the NM State men’s basketball team defeated Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico 84-71 inside a raucous Pan American Center on Lou Henson night.

The win also gave NM State its first victory over UNM at home since Dec. 4, 2007, and snapped five-game skid against the Lobos. Chuha and Jones came through for NM State in the second half, hauling in 15 of the 20 Aggie rebounds. Chuha wound up with 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds while Jones picked up his second double-double in as many games with 15 points and 10 boards. Huggins finished with 14-points and four boards on 4-of-8 shooting from downtown.

NM STATE DOWNS THE BEACHNM State continued its hot-streak at home on Dec. 3 when it defeated former Big West rival Long Beach State 93-85 inside the Pan American Center. The Aggies were led by Braxton Huggins, who racked up a game-high 26 points on top of 4-of-5 starters scoring in double-digits. The win also extended NM State’s home winning-streak to 15, dating back to last season.

Eli Chuha finished the night with a career-high 19 points and seven rebounds on 7-of-8 shooting while Sidy N’Dir added 18 points on 4-of-9 shooting and 8-of-10 effort from the charity stripe. Ian Baker chipped in with 15 points thanks to a 9-for-9 effort at the line with Jemerrio Jones rounding things out with his first-career double-double at the Division I level with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

NM STATE BATTLES ADVERSITY TO CLAIM FIRST ROAD VICTORY UNDER WEIRDespite a shooting slumped that bled into the opening minutes of the second-half, the NM State men’s basketball team was able to claw back from an eight-point deficit and defeat San Diego 56-51.

Game Notes #17 - at Chicago State

Jemerrio Jones led the Aggies’ resurgence with 14 second-half points on 6-of-10 shooting while Ian Baker and Braxton Huggins chipped in with 15 and 11 points, respectively. The win on Saturday made NM State the de-facto champions of the San Diego Classic, going 4-0, with wins over Samford, Bethune-Cookman, Nicholls State and the host, Toreros.

Saturday’s win over USD was NM State’s first road victory of the season under first-year head coach Paul Weir. It was also the Aggies’ first road victory against a non-rivalry, non-conference opponent since 2013 against Drake – an 81-69 affair in favor of New Mexico State.

AGGIES OUT SHOOT COLONELSHeading into the locker room trailing Nicholls State 44-43 at the half, NM State roared back in the second half and outscored the Colonels 43-30 in the second half. Paced by a pair of 20-point performances from Jemerrio Jones and Braxton Huggins, the NM State men’s basketball team breezed to an 86-74 victory in the second half on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Pan American Center.

After an exchange of leads to open the second stanza, the Aggies jumped into high-gear on the defensive end which catapulted them to a 59-47 lead after Joe Garza drained a three that forced Nicholls State head coach Richie Riley to call a timeout. From there it was all New Mexico State as it cruised to an 86-74 win.

WILDCATS TAMED BY SHORT-HANDED NM STATECareer night for Braxton Huggins and Sidy N’Dir on offense guided the New Mexico State men’s basketball team past Bethune-Cookman, 89-73, in its second game of the University of San Diego Classic.

After trailing Bethune-Cookman the first 9:20 minutes of action, NM State (3-2) erupted in the latter part of the first half and went on a 34-8 run to take a 50-29 lead heading into the break. Huggins scored 17 of his career-high 28 points in the opening half on 3-of-3 shooting beyond the arc on top of his 8-of-10 effort behind the line.

N’Dir also chipped in with 10 points in the opening stanza – including a thunderous dunk at the 1:11 mark that forced a Wildcat (2-2) timeout.

The Aggies’ largest lead of the game, 70-44, came at the 11:38 mark when Joe Garza drained a 3-pointer as time expired on the shot clock. From there, NM State managed its lead before cruising to an 89-73 victory over the Wildcats.

AGGIE FALL IN ABQThe Aggies played a tough New Mexico game at The Pit on Nov. 12 and took a 30-29 lead heading into the break behind 11 points from Ian Baker – who finished with a game-high 25. The Aggies were able to use a 10-5 edge in points off turnovers in the first half to take that lead as well. However, a scoring lull by NM State late in the second half led to a 20-9 run by the Lobos and gave them their largest lead of the night, 64-51, with 2:12 left in the game. The Aggies were able to cut the lead down to 63-53 with 53 second left to play before falling 72-59.

AGGIE DEBUTThe Aggie faithful got a chance to watch the newcomers make their debut on Friday night as Chancellor Ellis, Jemerrio Jones, Joe Garza and Marlon Jones all stepped foot onto Lou Henson Court for the first time donning the Crimson and White.

M. Jones had the best debut amongst the newcomers, scoring 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting to go with four boards and assist and block. Ellis was next in scoring with six points while Garza, a Las Cruces native, tallied three assists and one rebound. J. Jones was everything as advertised, finishing with two points, two boards, four assists three steals and a block.

CENTURY MARKNM State’s home-opening 100-52 win was the first time the Aggies have hit the century mark since Feb. 23, 2012, against Hawaii. Friday was just the 10th time NM State has reached the 100 point mark in a season-opening game.

ALLOW US TO REINTRODUCE OURSELVESFriday’s season and home-opener saw a very different Aggie team compared to those from the Marvin Menzies era. NM State was much more active on the offensive end and really put the pressure on Arizona Christian’s backcourt with NM State pushing the rock up the floor.

The Aggies upgraded defense forced 22 turnovers and turned them into 36 points. In the paint, the NM State big men gave NM State a 22-8 edge in points off turnovers while the Aggies as a team outscored Arizona Christian 40-10 in the paint.

On the offensive end, NM State had seven players reach double-figures while Jalyn Pennie and Eli Chuha both registering double-doubles. Guard Sidy N’Dir tied his career-high of 14 on 4-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-3 from downtown. In addition, Matt Taylor also had a new career-high in points with 13 while Chuha’s 12 rebounds was a new high for the redshirt sophomore. The 100 points was also the most by an Aggie team since Hawaii on Feb. 23, 2012.

BAKER NAMED TO PRESEASON WATCH LISTSenior guard Ian Baker was named to the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List on Wednesday the award committee announced. The honor is especially meaningful for the Aggies with the legendary head coach having led New Mexico State and currently serves as a special advisor to the team. The recipient of the 2017 Lou Henson Award will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet on April 31 in Phoenix, site of the men’s Division I basketball championship.

GO, GO, GO!With the start of the 2016-17 season on Friday, Nov. 11, it marked the start of a wild 15-day stretch for NM State. The Aggies played seven games in 15 days, including three on the road and traveled over 3,000 miles between three states during that stretch.

NOT THE AGGIES OF OLDUnder the direction of new head coach Paul Weir, fans will see a different style of Aggie basketball on the floor this season. The first-year head coach intends to play a more up-tempo style of play with an even more tenacious defensive, especially with the addition of assistant coach Jesse Bopp.

Ian Baker leads the group of returners as the floor general while Sidy N’Dir, Braxton Huggins, Jalyn Pennie and Matt Taylor rounds out the backcourt for NM State. In the front court, Johnathan Wilkins, Tanveer Bhullar and Eli Chuha will look to protect the rim. Coming out of their redshirt seasons will be Jermaine Haley and Bollo Gnahore.

Weir also added a little extra firepower in the backcourt with the addition of 3-point threat, Chancellor Ellis, and Las Cruces native Joe Garza. In addition to those three, NM State will also have the services of AJ Harris, an Ohio State transfer, in 2017-18 after he sits out this season as required by the NCAA transfer rules. With the new style of play, Weir also recruited some dynamic rim protectors in Jemerrio Jones, Marlon Jones and Johnny McCants.

AND SO IT BEGINS…On April 26, 2016, long-time Aggie men’s basketball assistant Paul Weir was named the 25th head coach at NM State. Weir, who has spent the last nine seasons on the NM State bench, has been the Aggies associate head coach and defensive coordinator since July 2011 for his predecessor Marvin Menzies.

Quickly after taking over the reins, Weir began assembling his coaching staff. His first hiring as head coach was securing

legendary head coach Lou Henson as the team’s special advisor. Weir then added Jesse Bopp, who came from Chattanooga by way of VCU, to his staff. He then rounded out his staff with CSU Bakersfield assistant Marc Hsu. A familiar face for fans on the bench this year will be Aerick Sanders, who stayed on to work under Weir.

Guy Meyer, a Santa Fe native, also joined Weir as the director of basketball operations. Jordan Sperber filled out the support staff as the video coordinator.

IN THE PROSWith the recent signing of Johnathan Gibson to the Dallas Mavericks, this is the first time since the 1999-00 NBA season where two former Aggie basketball alums are on an active NBA roster. Gibson joins Pascal Siakam, who has started all 11 games for the Toronto Raptors this year as a rookie.

SUPER SIAKAMFormer New Mexico State men’s basketball power forward Pascal Siakam secured his name into Aggie lore on June 23 after being selected in the first round by the Toronto Raptors as the 27th pick overall in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Siakam is just the third player in NM State history and the first in 46 years to be drafted in the first round since Sam Lacey (fifth overall) and Jimmy Collins (11th) in 1970. The Douala, Cameroon, native is also the first player drafted in the NBA since Randy Brown, who was the fourth pick in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft.

Siakam becomes just the fourth player from Cameroon since 2000 to be drafted to the NBA, joining Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje (2001, Portland Trailblazers), Luc Mbah a Moute (2008, Milwaukee Bucks) and Joel Embiid (2014, Philadelphia 76ers).

The 6-9 forward had a breakout season in 2015-16, averaging 20.3 points and 11.6 rebounds and ended with Siakam earning AP All-America Honorable Mention. He also racked up Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, NABC First-Team All-District VI, USBWA All-District VIII and Lou Henson All-America honors.

He led the nation with a whopping 27 double-doubles as a redshirt sophomore and was finished in the top 40 in several statistical categories, averaging 20.3 points (26th), 11.6 rebounds (eighth) and 2.4 blocks (32nd). Of the 22 players in 2015-16 that averaged a double-double, Siakam was the only player to score 20-plus points per game.

In just two seasons in Las Cruces, Siakam recorded 1,126 points – which ranks 21st in the program’s all-time scoring list. His two-year total in points is also the fourth-best in NM State history while his 658 career rebounds rank him 15th all-time.

His 690 points this season is the second-most in Aggie history for a single season while his 396 rebounds were the third-highest. The 396 boards was also the fourth-best mark in a single-season for the WAC. Siakam’s 658 career rebounds also ranks him 15th in conference history.

paul weir

Paul Weir became the 25th head men’s basketball coach at New Mexico State on April 26, 2016, after spending nine seasons as an assistant coach, including five seasons as the associate head coach, for the Aggies. He coached NM State to five WAC Tournament Championships (2010, 2012-15) and five subsequent NCAA Tournament appearances. The Aggies collected three WAC Championships during Weir’s tenure, including back-to-back WAC regular-season titles in 2015 and 2016 to go with their first WAC regular-season title in 2008. Overall, NM State has claimed seven WAC titles during his nine years with the program. The Aggies’ defense led the Western Athletic Conference in scoring defense and field-goal percentage defense the last two seasons. The Aggies ranked 10th nationally in scoring defense in 2015-16, allowing just 63.1 points a game. NM State ranked 11th nationally in field goal percentage defense, as opponents shot just 39.2-percent from the floor – NM State’s lowest since the 1960-61 season and fourth-best in program history. In 2014-15, the Aggies allowed the opposition only 59.8 points a game, ranking 21st nationally in scoring defense. NM State held three opponents under 40 points in the 14-15 campaign, all ranking in the top 10 of fewest points allowed by an Aggie team since 1950. In addition to his defensive work, Weir also directed the recruiting efforts for the Aggies. He was responsible for signing Daniel Mullings, the first WAC Player of the Year in school history and first AP All-American in 11 years at NM State in 2014. Mullings is the only player in school history to start on four-straight NCAA Tournament teams. He also landed Sim Bhullar, a two-time WAC Tournament MVP and the first Aggie in 24 years to play in the NBA. Bhullar was also the first player of Indian descent in NBA history. Weir came to NM State in 2007 after two seasons as the director of basketball operations at Iowa, where he served under Steve Alford. In 2005-06, his first season at Iowa City, the Hawkeyes won 25 games on their way to a Big Ten Tournament Championship. He got his start in collegiate basketball as an assistant for Mike McConathy at Northwestern State (La.) in 2004-05. The Demons went 21-12 and won the Southland Conference regular-season title. Weir served as the head coach at Don Bosco Catholic High School in Toronto, Canada, posting a 41-32 record before entering the collegiate ranks. His 2002-03 team was ranked ninth in the greater Toronto area. Weir was an outstanding player as well, gaining regional and city all-star honors as a point guard and team captain at Iona Catholic Secondary School before going on to play at York University (Toronto, Canada) in 1998-99, where he was the starting point guard for the Lions as a freshman. Weir graduated with honors while earning his bachelor’s degree from York in 2004. He earned his master’s degree in health and human performance from Northwestern State in 2005, added a second master’s degree in sports psychology from Iowa in 2010 and a third master’s degree in business administration from New Mexico State in 2012. He is currently enrolled in the Educational Leadership Doctoral Program at NM State. Weir and his wife Alma, a Las Cruces native, have one son, Theodore.
