Is your bottled water company sanitizing the reservoir of your cooler every 60-90 days?

If not, the inside of your cooler may look like this!

SanitizationCleaning Your Water Cooler

SUPPLIES NEEDED:1. Clean rubber gloves 5. Teaspoon measuring spoon2. Paper towels 6. Calibrated container (2 gallon pail)3. Lint-free towel 7. Unscented household liquid bleach4. Plastic scrub brush 8. Clean 1 gallon container fi lled with bottled water (a long handle will make cleaning easier)

*Never use soap/detergents, steel wool or other abrasives on your reservoir.

INSTRUCTIONS:1. UNPLUG the power cord.2. Remove bottle from cooler. If there is still water in the bottle, make sure that you cap or cover the bottle for re-use.3. From the COLD FAUCET drain all water from the cooler into a bucket and discard water.4. Remove the cooler top. If the cooler is equipped with a no-spill device, it may need to be removed fi rst. Look in the reservoir to see if there is a removable baffl e (see reference image). If so, remove the baffl e.5. If there is remaining water in the cold water chamber, drain it out. If the reservoir has an ice ring in it, add hot water to melt the ring and completely drain the reservoir. DO NOT spill water outside of the reservoir into the interior of the cooler.6. Prepare the cleaning solution in the calibrated container; add 1 teaspoon of unscented household liquid bleach to each 1 gallon of water.7. Wearing clean rubber gloves immerse the lint-free towel and/or scrub brush in the cleaning solution. Squeeze all excess cleaning solution from the towel and aggressively clean all surfaces of the reservoir interior. DO NOT pour the cleaning solution directly into the reservoir.8. To rinse the reservoir, carefully fi ll the reservoir with bottled water from the one gallon container until it reaches 1/2 inch from the top of the reservoir. Next, drain the “rinse” water from the reservoir through the COLD faucet.9. Use the same cleaning solution brush and/or cloth to clean the baffl e, the cooler top, removable drip tray and faucets. If your cooler is equipped with a no-spill device, it should be cleaned with the same cleaning solution. Use the clean 1 gallon container fi lled with bottled water to thoroughly rinse these parts.10. Wearing clean rubber gloves, re-install all parts: baffl e, cooler top, faucets if removed and no-spill device (if equipped).11. Place a bottle back on the cooler and drain two cups of water from each faucet, or until there is no evidence of chlorine taste and/or odor. Dry any excess water that has spilled on the cooler and/or fl oor.12. Plug the cooler back into the electrical outlet. Allow at least forty-fi ve (45) minutes for the water to reach the appropriate temperature.

If you have followed these steps, you now have a clean cooler and you have taken an active role in preserving the quality of the equipment you use to dispense your bottled water.

Studies show water coolers should be sanitized regularly. When was the last time your cooler was cleaned?

“It was found that 36 [of 50] and 28% of water dispenser samples from the residences and the workplaces, were contaminated by at least one coliform or indicator bacterium and/or at least one pathogenic bacterium. Cleaning the water dispenser every 2 months seemed to limit the extent of contamination.”

Listed in: American Society for Microbiology’s Comparison of the Microbiological Quality of Water Coolers and That of Municipal Water Systems research study

“Many coolers may be harboring unhealthful high levels of bacteria that can cause nausea and diarrhea in some people. When scientists checked the bacterial count of water from 10 water coolers on the campus of Boston’s Northeastern University, they found that in each case the count reached at least 2,000 potentially harmful organisms for every thousandth of a liter of water, or four times the 500-organism limit the government recommends.

It appears that the organisms from each new bottle of water adhere to a cooler’s reservoir – the “well” in which the bottle sits – and also to its hot and cold water spigots, accumulating over time and thereby boosting the bacterial count of any water that passes through those areas on the way to a cup or glass.”

Listed in: Tuffs University Diet & Nutrition Bacteria in the Cooler, 1992

“The goal of this procedure is to provide a uniform protocol to con-trol microbiological contamination in water coolers. Clean your bottled-water dispenser with every bottle change or every six weeks, whichever comes first.”

Listed in: Safety and Health Services Division, Recommendations for Periodic Cleaning of Water Coolers

“Federal laws set stringent national standards for bottled water. Keep the open bottle clean and preferably refrigerated as the water, cap and cap liner can all support bacterial growth which may originate from the mouth or the environment. In the case of 18L bottles used with a dispenser, clean water coolers regularly … Clean your bottled water cooler before every bottle change, drain water … use a disinfecting solution.”

Workers Comp Risks - OSHA Recognized

https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/beverage/water_delivery.html

Loading bottled water onto water coolers exposes employees to several risks. A bottle weighs approximately 48 pounds. To load a bottle, the employee must lift it up, over and onto the water cool-er (while trying to avoid spilling the bottle). This is an awkward task that places strain on the employee’s back, shoulders, arms and legs (Fig. 7-8). Another hazard is that employees may slip and fall as a result of spilled water.
