The main aim of the soup kitchen is to ensure that all who are in need can access the services atChampness Hall. We provide soup, bread, sandwiches, pasties, cake and fruit juice four evenings aweek. On a Saturday we provide a home cooked two course meal with hot drinks. All this is provided by alarge group of volunteers who give their time and food for free on a rota basis. From this location the soup kitchen began to co-ordinate food distribution from our various supermarketpartners to homelessness charities that operate within the Borough. The work is significant as many of thepeople who access the soup kitchen do not engage with services and often present with multiple andinterrelating health problems. From our humble beginnings over four years ago serving soup from theback of our cars outside the Town Hall one night a week. We have developed into an importantcommunity asset. One that not only meets the basic needs but also plays a part in reintegrating sociallyisolated people into the community.

The project is based within Champness Hall and the building requires complete renovation. inorder to extend our services we need to completely refurbish and refit an industrial kitchen tomeet with health and safety standards. This includes the purchase of an industrial dishwasher. The benefits that this will bring to the participants is the opportunity to access a home cookedhealthy meal on a daily basis.Which will also help to reduce the risk of malnutrition among themost vulnerable people of our Borough.in these tough economic times the participants will alsobe able to access the food distribution service that we already provide from our supermarketpartners to other homeless charities within the Borough with the opportunity to have fresh fruit, vegetables and other nutritional food. With interrelating health problems and little or no direct access to health services we have beenworking in partnership with and have provided opportunities for BARDOC and the local HARTteam to offer flu injections and registration at local GP surgeries. They would like to begin to offerscreening and other medical interventions at Champness Hall. This would be of benefit toeveryone in the wider community. We will also need to extend and increase the number of our volunteers in order to coordinate,,serve and support the participants. This will give local people within the Borough andwider community the opportunity to access training workshops. These will include Local servicesand signposting training, understanding the housing options of the homeless, understanding theunderlining reasons for homelessness and conflict resolution.ln the long term volunteers wouldbe in a stronger position to apply for job opportunities in this area of work and acquire valuableteam and partnership work expertence.
