Introductions

• Find the person who has the same color paper as you do

• Interview that person and the be ready to introduce them to the class– What is your name?– What is your year?– What house are you in?– What is your concentration?– Why did you want to take “Class and Culture”?– What is your special talent?

Suggestions for Future Short Papers

• This is a “short paper” not a journal entry. Focus on clear analysis and connections to readings.

• The maximum number of pages is 5. I will give you an extra page, but at the end of page 6, I will stop reading and start deducting points.

• This stuff is complicated – you can acknowledge that. But don’t be blatantly contradictory – tease out the confusing elements. Incorporate a thesis statement

• Use readings and lectures from the Part the paper is on• Watch for typos, missing words, etc. Proofread!• Use of “I” is ok, but be wary of using too many “I thinks” as

it can weaken your argument

Using References

• Discuss, criticize, comment on, make connections to the readings, don’t just casually mention. Use the readings and lectures to add to your argument

Incorrect Example: A lot of people have moved out of Gary, Indiana just as Wilson mentioned.

Better Example: Gary, Indiana is an example of how deindustrialization can cause an exodus of the middle class from the inner city, leaving behind an impoverished population with little to no employment possibilities. Wilson, in When Work Disappears, argues that the isolation and unemployment of the poor left behind leads to a cycle of poverty and other social problems.

Why is this better? It takes a specific example and turns it into a concept that Wilson discusses (deindustrialization and the exodus of the middle class). It then uses the reading to further the argument.
