PURPOSE

The purpose of the Evangelical Congregational Church is to know Christ

and to make him known.

MISSION

The mission of the Evangelical Congregational Church is to raise up healthy churches proclaiming Christ to a

hurting world.

holiness.

Compassion for the Lost

As demonstrated by evangelism and acts of mercy on a local, national and global scale.

Servant Leadership

As demonstrated by the training and development of men and women

for mission and ministry.

Healthy Ministries

As demonstrated by changed lives through culturally sensitive churches

and denominational institutions.

United in the Body of Christ

As demonstrated by the networking of churches with the Evangelical Congregational Church

and the larger Kingdom of God.

VISION

The Evangelical Congregational Church will be a dynamic movement of God that is led by pastors and laity

who have a burning passion for God and a missionary zeal to reach the lost. We will creatively obey the Great

Commission by transforming plateaued and declining churches into healthy, disciple-making churches that are

committed to evangelizing the communities to which God has called them. Healthy churches will reproduce

themselves by planting churches in least-reached communities. Interdependence will be the distinguishing

mark of the Evangelical Congregational Church as local churches network with one another and ministries

beyond the E.C. family to proclaim the Gospel to the world.

WELCOME

Welcome to the new format National Conference!

In January 2015 I asked the question: “What if National Conference Accomplished Something Better?” Our

denominational forefathers thought it was a good thing to conference. For Albright’s brethren, the purpose of such

gatherings was important to advancing the Good News about Jesus. The Evangelical Association emerged onto the

pages of history with vibrant passion for lost souls and a powerful message to proclaim to the world. Did you ever

wonder how it would feel to leave Conference and sense that you’re ready to engage your community with fresh and

passionate opportunities to live out the Gospel?

Over the past few years we have rightly spent a lot of time looking at our denomination’s structure. But that’s finished!

Now we direct our focus and energy at the mission. “I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward

to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Jesus,

is calling us.” (Phillippians 3:13-14 NLT)

As read the enclosed material you will notice that the daily agenda looks very different from previous years. There are a

few things that haven’t changed: we begin by gathering together around the Lord’s table; then the Episcopal Address

and Officers’ reports begin our first business session. We’ll end the day as we worship alongside our brothers and sisters

from Mexico and celebrate as they become a National Conference. Thursday afternoon has been reserved for a very

special interactive learning experience for all Conference members. Finally on Friday, we will celebrate what the Lord is

doing in the lives of his people as we credential people for service, celebrate milestone events, and lift our hearts in

worship.

I trust that this year you will be challenged, encouraged, and strengthened as we spend time together hearing Kingdom

stories, learning together by gaining vital insights into Kingdom work, worshiping our great God and celebrating what

God is doing in and through the Evangelical Congregational Church. Join me at National Conference 2017 as together we

“Press On” to what lies ahead!

In Christ’s service,

First Time Lay Delegate Orientation Wednesday, May 24

10:45 am

The position of lay delegate has been one of the most important in the Evangelical Congregational Church,

and as such it is not a responsibility to be taken lightly. This short orientation will help you to develop a

better knowledge of the history and work of the EC Church. The orientation will be held on Wednesday

morning at a site to be determined. Check with the EC Courtesy Desk upon registration to get details.

“Kingdom & Community Experience” Thursday Afternoon, May 25

On Thursday afternoon we will join in a brand new learning experience as the Executive Director and

Associates facilitate a series of missional conversations. We will participate in a group project of discovery as

we find out how to help an imaginary EC Church that is struggling to impact its community with the Gospel.

Together we will uncover some of the issues that have caused their current situation, as well as the resources

and strategies available to the local leaders to help the church make a difference in their neighborhood and

beyond.

Women’s Program

Wednesday afternoon, Tina Kidd Johnson, pastor’s wife at Canyon Falls, Kentucky will be the speaker. Her early

life was influenced by beloved missionary/teacher, Miss Fern Sweigert from Pennsylvania.

Thursday morning will feature Tim Bell, Director of Regional Ministries for One Mission Society. Tim has been

the face of OMS at National Conference for a number of years, as he mans their display. He lives in

Shippenville, PA with wife, Nancy.

Friday morning the speaker will be Beth Grimm, who works with Wycliffe Bible Translators Volunteers. She

ministers to missionary families as she assesses learning needs of their children. Her home is in Lancaster, PA,

though she frequently travels out of the country.

Scheduling has been planned so they can join the Conference for the Episcopal Address, worship services, and

the Thursday afternoon “Kingdom and Community Experience.”
