What is a Herxheimer’s Reaction? (Die-off)

u 1984 Study in The Journal of Infectious Diseases

u Test animals infected with Escherichia coli

u Group 1: Given antibiotics

u Group 2: Given placebo

30Copyright © Beth Secosky

Page 31: Agenda –Step 1: Learn · Module 1: Learn – Overview of SCD Preparing Yourself and Your Family to Make Changes

What is a Herxheimer’s Reaction? (Die-off)

u Group 1: Antibiotics

u Endotoxins increased from 10-fold to 2,000 fold

u Bacteria in blood decreased

u In some animals the endotoxins continued to increase after bacteria cleared from the blood

u Group 2: Placebo

u Endotoxins stayed proportional to the amount of bacteria in the blood

u Conclusion

u When bacteria are killed (by antibiotics in the study), the level of endotoxins increases significantly.

What Happens When We Feed Pathogenic Bacteria?Per Dr. Martha Herbert

Study: Short-term immune triggers cause long-term brain inflammation

u TNF-a increases are triggered by bacterial and other exposures.

u In the bloodstream this increase lasts 9 hours

u In the liver it lists 1 week

u In the BRAIN it lasts 10 months

u This means that someone who gets exposed to a trigger of TNF-a every now and then could like they have a chronic and untreatable brain problem.

*In other words, when we feed the pathogenic bacteria, it feeds the fire and makes it more difficult to put it out.
