1. THE GENERAL REvIEw

Geographical characteristics of Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is located on the joint of two continents – Europe and Asia. The territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan is 2724,9 thousand кm2, and is stretched the lower reaches of the rivers Volga in the west – to the mountains of Altai in the east and from the mountains of Zailijsky Alatau of the Northern Tien-Shan in the south – to the Western-Siberian lowland in the north.

On the area of lands the republic takes the ninth place in the world, conceding only Russia, China, the USA, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, India and Australia; the second place on the territory among the CIS countries. The extent state frontier of the republic – 13394 km, including: with the Russian Federation – 7591 km, the Republic of Uzbekistan – 2354 km, the Kirghiz Republic – 1241 km, the Chinese – 1782 km, the Turkmenistan – 426 km.

Administrative-territorial structure

Nowadays the system of the administrative-territorial structure of the republic includes 14 areas, 2 cities of republican significance, 175 administrative areas, 87 cities, 34 settlements and 6904 rural settlements.

Population for 01.01.2013 (аccording to current accounting) – 16909,8 thousand persons.

Population density – 6,2 persons for 1 km2.The Capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan is Astana with the

population for 01.01.2013 – 778,2 thousand persons.The largest city is Almaty with the population for 01.01.2013 –

1475,4 thousand persons.The largest by area oblast (region) is Karaganda (428 thousand кm2).The most densely populated oblast (region) is the South Kazakhstan

(22,8 persons on 1 кm2).
