Amadas and Barlowe Expedition
• PURPOSE/ a colony to provide wealth for England ( a base for attacking Spanish ships)
• Queen Elizabeth I allows Walter Raleigh to take up the charter “to discover and inhabit strange lands”
• The job of Amadas and Barlowe was discovering a suitable place for the future colnies
The Ralph Lane Colony
• Commanded by Ralph Lane and Richard Grenville/John White was also along
• Established on Roanoke Island• Problems: low on food, trouble with the
Native Americans and poor leadership• Returned to England with Sir Francis Drake in
June of 1586
“The Lost Colony”
• John White was Governor of the colony• 117 men, women and children leave
Plymouth, England on April 26, 1587• Virginia Dare was the 1st European child born
in the New World
