The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) oversees the provision of long-term services for:

facilities, and• Provides other services and opportunities for
community involvement.
DADS Vision and Mission
Vision: Aging Texans and individuals with disabilities will be supported by a comprehensive and cost-effective service delivery system that promotes and enhances individual well-being, dignity, and choice.
Mission: To provide a comprehensive array of aging and disability services, supports, and opportunities that are easily accessed in local communities.
Age Well Live Well focus on:
• Improving the physical health of Texans and the state
• Creating awareness of aging issues and resources offered through Age Well Live Well partners and the aging and disability network
• Providing opportunities for Texans to volunteer with older adults and people with disabilities
• Engaging local communities in collaborative partnerships that benefit everyone
Age Well Live Well Programs: • Texercise a health and wellness promotions program that
aims to improve the quality of life of older adults and people with disabilities through education and engagement in healthy lifestyle habits.
• Volunteer…You’ll be amazed is an invitation to volunteer with older adults and people with disabilities in Texas. Connecting with others will expand your world and theirs. Learn new skills while helping others.
• Silver Lining a partnership between DADS and Girl Scouts offers Scouts the opportunity to volunteer in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
The Changing Face of Texas
In 2012, Texas’s population was more than 25 million and nearly 4
million (15%) were 60 years or older.
It is estimated that by 2030 Texas’s 60 plus population will increase to
over 6 million (20%).
An increase of almost 25% from 2012.
Challenges of an Aging Population
• The U.S. spends more on health care than any other industrialized nation in the world.
• In 2013, U.S. health care spending increased 3.6 percent to $2.9 trillion = $9,255 per person.
• In 2013, averaged out-of-pocket health care spending for people 65 and older was $5,069, an increase of 35%.
• By 2022, national health spending is expected to comprise 20 percent of the gross domestic product.

By 2030 the Texas adult obesity rate will reach 57.2 percent.

DADS aims to improve the lives of older Texans and people with disabilities across Texas through comprehensive programs and services to enhance their well-being, dignity and choice.
DADS programs and services ensure Texans are better prepared to age and live well. Programs and Resources: Texercise Classic – a 12-week program in which group
participants meet weekly and exercise together. Texercise Select – an evidence-based program in which group
participants meet twice a week for 10-weeks and learn about healthy lifestyle behaviors while exercising.
GetFitTexas! – a free, online physical activity tracker. Age Well Live Well – resources to educate Texans on health and
wellness, volunteerism and information awareness. Volunteer…You’ll be Amazed! – resources to help Texans find
out how and where to volunteer.

PartnerInternational Council on Active Aging (ICAA) promotes Active Aging as a solution to improving the quality of life for older adults. Their efforts are directed at helping businesses excel in serving the 50+ population, and at helping that population serve itself.
Programs and Resources: Active Aging Week – a campaign that aims to give as many older
adults as possible the means to experience wellness activities and exercise in a safe, supportive environment.
Get Active – a handout that provides tips on being physically active.
Walking Center – a webpage that provides links to various resources for walking.
Brain Aerobics – a resource that provides various ways to exercise the brain.
Preventive Foot Health – a webpage with information and links on foot health.
*ICAA has many useful resources on their website (www.icaa.cc) that can be used as part of Age Like a Champion.
Texas AgriLIFE Extension Service helps improve the lives of people, businesses and communities across Texas through high-quality, community-based education.
AgriLIFE programs ensure Texans are better prepared to eat well, stay healthy, manage money, and raise their children to be successful adults.Programs and Resources: Dinner Tonight – weekly video demonstrations of healthy meals, includes
recipes. Master of Memory – a six-lesson series that helps people evaluate and
improve their memory function. Walk Across Texas – a fitness program to help participants adopt the
habit of regular, moderate intensity exercise. Medication Management – a program that helps people comply with
instructions for taking medications, as well as how to safely sort and store their medications.
Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes – a series of classes that teach participants how to manage diabetes.
Master Wellness Volunteers – a 40-hour training course with certification. Certified Master Wellness Volunteers give back a minimum of 40 hours in volunteer outreach and training.

Texas’ 28 area agencies on aging (AAA) help Texans 60 and older, their family members and/or other caregivers receive the information and assistance they need to locate and access community services to help them live with dignity and choice in their homes and communities for as long as possible.
The Texas AAA offer an array of health and volunteer opportunities in their communities.Programs and Resources: Matter of Balance – Eight, two-hour sessions designed to help
people 60 and older reduce their fear of falling through group discussion, problem solving strategies and increasing their physical activity levels.
Lunch and Learn guest speaker – representatives from the area agencies on aging make great guest speakers and can provide sessions on caregiver supports, medication screening, care coordination and health/wellness supports available.

The Aging & Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs) help simplify access to long-term care by providing one point of contact for people who need help. ADRCs cut through the confusing maze of funding sources, multiple intake systems and eligibility processes.
The ADRCs also help educate residents on local programs and services.
