Chapters from Puranas Come Alive on Canvas by Meera Manu T’Puram: Aimed at spread- ing the messages regarding hygiene in sanitation, waste management, slaughter houses and septage manage- ment among masses, Suchit- wa Mission is gearing up to launch an intensive IEC (In- formation, Education and Communication) campaign in all districts of the state with creative tools such as television advertisements, music albums and YouTube videos under a brand name and probably with a brand ambassador. The task will be entrusted to an agency or more who have came up with an ex- pression of interest (EoI). Alongside, it is fortifying tar- get groups, by roping in an effective participation of schools and youth organisa- tions. The campaign aims to result in changing the atti- tude and behaviour of people towards waste management and environmental protec- tion. “The 12 agencies short- listed after calling the EoI are asked to submit proposals. Depending on the tasks to be finished, selection of agency will be done and assigned the tasks. With the participation of target groups, an intense campaigning will be con- ducted throughout a year with new techniques,” said V S Santhosh Kumar, director (operations) of Suchitwa Mission. Activities of the tar- get groups and agencies for creative work will go in par- allel. Major groups is schools such as Student Police Ca- dets, Scouts and Guides, NCC and organisations like Youth Welfare Board and Kerala Mahila Samakhya Society would have their par- ticipation in the campaign- ing. As a prelude, workshops of state and district level of- ficers of the groups were conducted in Thiruvanan- thapuram and Thrissur. An action plan has to be formu- lated to be implemented on all districts in the state. The plan is to carry out the IEC campaign along with the ac- tivities the target groups al- ready do. Funding for the whole project will be done by the state government and through Nirmal Bharat Ab- hiyan (NBA), a comprehen- sive community-led sanita- tion programme of the Gov- ernment of India. Youth to Join Hands for a Cleaner State by Anila Backer Kozhikode : Playing games with friends is some- thing that we all really en- joy. But what about doing it in the middle of your classroom lectures? You may feel it to be something extraordinary. But the Eng- lish Department of Mala- bar Christian College is planning to introduce ‘gamification’ in classrooms to promote student engage- ment in active learning with the aid of technology. Employing internet and electronic devices for en- suring the active participa- tion of students in class- rooms is what Premanand M E, a professor at the Eng- lish Department, aims at. Premanand, the winner of the Best Techno-faculty Award instituted by the ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu for using Internet and Com- munication Technology (ICT) in classrooms, plans to make use of the services offered by the website ‘www.kahoot.it’ for better student involvement in classes. With the game-based classroom response system offered by the website, a quiz can be conducted as a game, involving the whole classroom, in clicking the answers for the questions displayed on big screens. Any electronic device with internet connectivity acts as a clicker for marking the answers. The websites have provisions for framing questions, uploading im- ages and videos for the quiz and also allow playing mu- sic during the game. “We often try out new concepts in teaching. The game-based pedagogy, not attempted by any other educational institution in the state, is our new strat- egy,” says Premanad. “The lack of sufficient number of electronic de- vices such as Tablet PCs is the only limitation for its immediate implementation and whenever we get some 15 or 20 Tablet PCs, we will be doing it,” he adds. “Even though the inter- net-enabled mobile phones are common among stu- dents, their ban in class- rooms act as a barrier,” he says.“We are planning to get Akash Tablets for stu- dents and look forward for the support of some wealthy investors or the college alumni for our venture,” he says. Introducing the game in classrooms, including questions based on differ- ent subjects and chapters, will enhance the learning procedure of the students. Moreover, the clicker show- ing only the answer options in different coloured geo- metric shapes will further add to their cognitive sens- es. “The gaming will moti- vate the students in learn- ing the subjects. They will surely learn the topics for winning the game,” opines Saigeetha, a guest lecturer at the department. “As they are having ob- jective type questions for their examinations, this will be an added advan- tage,” she adds. The clicker quiz was tried out at the college during a seminar conducted by the college. “Students and teachers from different colleges par- ticipated in the quiz based on general knowledge with great enthusiasm,” says Premanand. Apart from the newly proposed teaching meth- odology, the department often utilises the internet for teaching as well as for the students’ development. The website of the depart- ment provides the students with a platform for improv- ing their creative writing skills and the language. “We aim to promote English language through internet by utilising its re- sources and intend to pro- vide maximum exposure to our students,” says Prem- anand. “We even make use of the concept of infotainment in classrooms, by making students interpret select videos,” he says. ‘Gamification’ in Classrooms to Make Learning Enjoyable Students involved in clicker quiz when the ‘gamification’ was tried out during a seminar held at the Malabar Christian College the other day The English Department of MCC is planning to introduce ‘gamification’ in classrooms to promote student engagement in active learning Athira Sajith with her painting ‘Srishti’ | EXPRESS Express News Service Kannur: The state-level in- auguration of the fourth an- niversary celebrations of the Student Police Cadet(SPC) project will be held at Na- vaneetham auditorium here on Saturday. Kozhikode: Listening to music and completing a painting seem to be a bit dif-ferent. But artist Athira Sa-jith says that she completed the series of murals, ‘Anan-thasayanam,' by listening to the Swathi Thirunal keertha-nas sung by k S Chithra.

“Each of my strokes is born out of the lines that I heard during the work. A portion of the love of Swathi Thirunal for Ananthapad-manabhan can be spotted in my work ‘Ananthasayanam,' recently done for DC Books for its compilation - ‘18 Puranangal - Lokam Namik-kunna Nammude Paithru-kam, Nammude kathakal',” she says.

As a latecomer to the field of art, Athira says her cre-ative life started after mar-riage and having two chil-dren, Meenakshi and Ma-hadevan. Never trained in childhood or college days in any form of art, be it paint-ing, writing or dance, she is now actively involved in holding her painting exhibi-tions, choreographing and planning her dream project of combining art and music to develop a common plat-form for uniting skilled art-ists and those who love art, though not artists.

“From childhood, I had an interest in art, dancing and poetry. Due to inhibition, the talents lay dormant till my marriage. Soon after gradu-ation, I got married and only after my children were born,

I decided to take up art seri-ously. Meditation gave me inner strength to reinvent the talents and the immense support from my husband Sajith led to the person I am today,” says Athira, who is currently holding an exhibi-tion of her works here, along with Ernakulam, Thiru-vananthapuram and kot-tayam. A similar exhibition was held in Thrissur.

Hailing from kazhakoot-tam in Thiruvananthapuram, she has travelled to many places as part of her husband (a geophysicist at oNgC)’s official duties. After Assam and gujarat, the shift to Chennai was crucial in her career. The land found out the talent in the artist and gave her friends who could move with her and guide her to art and dance.

of late she did graduation in fine arts and took basic lessons in murals from Prince Thonnakkal.

“Experiencing the object helps in portraying it deeply. When we personally see and touch a leaf, we can under-stand its emotions. Later when we sketch and paint it on canvas, the strokes will explain the leaf's emotions,” she says.

The paintings include ‘Swargarohanam' from Vish-nu Purana, ‘krishna Leela' from Brahma Vaivartha Purana, ‘Sagara Manthan' from kurma Purana, ‘Vara-havatar' from Varaha Pura-na, ‘Vamanavatar' from Va-mana Purana, ‘Matsyavatar' from Matsya Purana, ‘Bhag-eerathi' from Naradiya Pura-na, ‘Bhagavatam' from Bhagavata Purana, ‘Skanda Mahatmyam' from Skanda Purana, ‘Suryopasana' from Bhavishya Purana, ‘Ma-hishasura Mardhini' from Markandeya Purana, ‘Ag-nideva' from Agni Purana, ‘Moksha kanda' from garu-da Purana, ‘Naimisharan-yam,' the place where pura-nas originated, ‘Srishti Sthiti Samhara' from Linga Puranam, ‘Srishti, the Cre-ation' from Brahmanda Purana, ‘Jagannatha' from Brahma Purana and ‘Shivo-ham' from Vayu Purana.

T’Puram: Aimed at spread-ing the messages regarding hygiene in sanitation, waste management, slaughter houses and septage manage-ment among masses, Suchit-wa Mission is gearing up to launch an intensive IEC (In-formation, Education and Communication) campaign in all districts of the state with creative tools such as television advertisements, music albums and YouTube videos under a brand name and probably with a brand ambassador.

The task will be entrusted to an agency or more who have came up with an ex-pression of interest (EoI). Alongside, it is fortifying tar-get groups, by roping in an effective participation of

schools and youth organisa-tions. The campaign aims to result in changing the atti-tude and behaviour of people towards waste management and environmental protec-tion.

“The 12 agencies short-listed after calling the EoI are asked to submit proposals. Depending on the tasks to be finished, selection of agency will be done and assigned the tasks. With the participation of target groups, an intense campaigning will be con-ducted throughout a year with new techniques,” said V S Santhosh kumar, director (operations) of Suchitwa Mission. Activities of the tar-get groups and agencies for creative work will go in par-allel.

Major groups is schools such as Student Police Ca-

dets, Scouts and guides, NCC and organisations like Youth Welfare Board and kerala Mahila Samakhya Society would have their par-ticipation in the campaign-ing. As a prelude, workshops of state and district level of-ficers of the groups were conducted in Thiruvanan-thapuram and Thrissur. An action plan has to be formu-lated to be implemented on all districts in the state. The plan is to carry out the IEC campaign along with the ac-tivities the target groups al-ready do.

Funding for the whole project will be done by the state government and through Nirmal Bharat Ab-hiyan (NBA), a comprehen-sive community-led sanita-tion programme of the gov-ernment of India.

Youth to Join Hands for a Cleaner State

Kozhikode : Playing games with friends is some-thing that we all really en-joy. But what about doing it in the middle of your classroom lectures? You may feel it to be something extraordinary. But the Eng-lish Department of Mala-bar Christian College is planning to introduce ‘gamification’ in classrooms to promote student engage-ment in active learning with the aid of technology.

Employing internet and electronic devices for en-suring the active participa-tion of students in class-rooms is what Premanand M E, a professor at the Eng-lish Department, aims at. Premanand, the winner of the Best Techno-faculty Award instituted by the ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu for using Internet and Com-munication Technology (ICT) in classrooms, plans to make use of the services offered by the website ‘www.kahoot.it’ for better student involvement in classes.

With the game-based classroom response system offered by the website, a quiz can be conducted as a game, involving the whole classroom, in clicking the answers for the questions displayed on big screens. Any electronic device with internet connectivity acts as a clicker for marking the answers. The websites have provisions for framing questions, uploading im-ages and videos for the quiz and also allow playing mu-sic during the game.

“We often try out new concepts in teaching. The

game-based pedagogy, not attempted by any other educational institution in the state, is our new strat-egy,” says Premanad.

“The lack of sufficient number of electronic de-vices such as Tablet PCs is the only limitation for its immediate implementation and whenever we get some 15 or 20 Tablet PCs, we will

be doing it,” he adds.“Even though the inter-

net-enabled mobile phones are common among stu-dents, their ban in class-rooms act as a barrier,” he says.“We are planning to get Akash Tablets for stu-dents and look forward for the support of some wealthy investors or the college alumni for our venture,” he says.

Introducing the game in classrooms, including

questions based on differ-ent subjects and chapters, will enhance the learning procedure of the students. Moreover, the clicker show-ing only the answer options in different coloured geo-metric shapes will further add to their cognitive sens-es.

“The gaming will moti-vate the students in learn-ing the subjects. They will surely learn the topics for winning the game,” opines Saigeetha, a guest lecturer at the department.

“As they are having ob-jective type questions for their examinations, this will be an added advan-tage,” she adds.

The clicker quiz was tried out at the college during a seminar conducted by the college.

“Students and teachers from different colleges par-ticipated in the quiz based on general knowledge with great enthusiasm,” says Premanand.

Apart from the newly proposed teaching meth-odology, the department often utilises the internet for teaching as well as for the students’ development. The website of the depart-ment provides the students with a platform for improv-ing their creative writing skills and the language.

“We aim to promote English language through internet by utilising its re-sources and intend to pro-vide maximum exposure to our students,” says Prem-anand.

“We even make use of the concept of infotainment in classrooms, by making students interpret select videos,” he says.
