LOS ANGELES (AP) —“Game of Thrones” resur-rected the Iron Throne atSunday’s Emmy ceremony,ruling as top drama on anight of surprises in which“Pose” star Billy Portermade history and the com-edy series “Fleabag” led aBritish invasion that over-turned expectations.
“This all started in thedemented mind of GeorgeR.R. Martin,” said “Gameof Thrones” producer DavidBenioff, thanking the authorwhose novels were the basisof HBO’s fantasy saga.
Porter, who stars in theFX drama set in the LGBTQball scene of the late 20thcentury, became the firstopenly gay man to win a bestdrama series acting Emmy.
“I’m so overjoyed and sooverwhelmed to have livedto see this day,” Porter said.
Amazon’s “Fleabag,” adark comedy about a dys-functional woman, was hon-ored as best comedy andearned top acting honors forits British creator and star,Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and abest director trophy.
“This is getting a ridicu-lous,” Waller-Bridge said inher third trip to the stage tocollect the top trophy.
Her acting win blocked“Veep” star Julia Lou-is-Dreyfus from setting arecord as the most-honoredperformer in Emmy history.
Porter, a Tony and Gram-my Award winning actor,relished his groundbreakingmoment. Quoting the latewriter James Baldwin, Por-ter said it took him manyyears to believe he has theright to exist.
“I have the right, youhave the right, we all havethe right,” he said.
English actress JodieComer was honored as bestdrama actress for “Killing
Eve.” She competed withco-star Sandra Oh, who re-ceived a Golden Globe forher role and would havebeen the first actress ofAsian descent to win anEmmy in the category.
Bill Hader won his secondconsecutive best comedyactor award for the hitmancomedy “Barry.”
Peter Dinklage, namedbest supporting actor for“Game of Thrones,” set a
record for most wins forthe same role, four, break-ing a tie with Aaron Paul of“Breaking Bad.”
“Ozark” star Julia Garnerwon the best supporting ac-tress trophy against a fieldincluding four actressesfrom “Game of Thrones.”
The auditorium eruptedin cheers when Jharrel Je-rome of “When They SeeUs,” about the Central ParkFive case, won the best ac-
tor award for a limited se-ries or movie.
“Most important, this isfor the men that we knowas the Exonerated Five,”said Jerome, naming thefive wrongly convicted men,who were in the audience.They stood and saluted theactor as the crowd applaud-ed them.
It was the only honor forthe acclaimed Netflix series;“Chernobyl” won the bestlimited series honor.
Streaming hit new Emmyheights, powered by Ama-zon Prime winners “Flea-bag,” “The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel” and a “Very En-glish Scandal,” and Netflix’s“Bandersnatch (Black Mir-ror),” honored as best mov-ie. But HBO again showedits strength, including withthe trophies for “Cher-nobyl,” “Barry” and John Ol-iver’s best variety-talk win.
Michelle Williams, hon-ored as best actress for herportrayal of dancer GwenVerdon in FX’s limited se-ries “Fosse/Verdon,” issueda call to arms for gender andethnic equality.
She thanked the networkand studio behind the proj-ect for “supporting mecompletely and paying meequally because they under-stood ... when you put valueinto a person, it empowersthat person to get in touchwith their own inherent val-ue. And where do they putthat value? They put it intotheir work.”
“And so the next time awoman, and especially awoman of color, because shestands to make 52 cents onthe dollar compared to herwhite male counterpart,tells you what she needs inorder to do her job, listen toher,” Williams said.
Patricia Arquette, whowon the trophy for best sup-porting actress in a limit-ed-series or movie for “TheAct,” paid tribute to herlate trans sister, Alexis Ar-quette, and called for an endto prejudice against transpeople.
