For research engineer Mahen-dran Navaratnasamy of AlbertaAgriculture and Rural Develop-ment (ARD), “return to the landwhat comes for the land” is thesimplest way to make the live-stock industry more sustainable.“Everything involved with live-stock production comes from theland,” he says. “We need to putback into the land to have a sus-tainable cycle that is healthy andproductive.”

Navaratnasamy and his col-leagues are applying that simpletruth to their research on the chal-lenges of manure management.They think of manure first as a re-source, not a waste, and look forways to capture the value of ma-nure and put it back into the land.

A promising new manure man-agement option is the process ofanaerobic digestion using biodi-gesters. This process opens upthe opportunity for livestock farm-ers to use manure as a resourceto produce biogas, which can beused as an on-farm energysource and, at larger scales, po-tentially as an off-farm energysource and additional revenuestream.

One challenge with this optionis what to do with the leftover ma-terial from the anaerobic diges-tion process – a frothy,manure-based slurry called “di-gestate.”

That’s driving a new focus onlearning more about the potentialof this material for land applica-tion.

“Digestate is basically decom-posed manure minus thegaseous components that are re-leased in the anaerobic digestionprocess,” says Virginia Nelson,project engineer at the Agricul-tural Technology Centre in Leth-bridge. “It’s not quite the samecomposition as regular manure,but it should have similar value asa nutrient resource for land appli-cation. Because of its composi-tion, digestate may also havehandling and environmental ad-vantages compared to otherforms of manure.”

The digestate can be used forland application as a nutrientsource for crops, in the samemanner as liquid manure. Thereis also potential to further processthe digestate into a bio-based fer-tilizer.

“For producers, the primarybenefit of considering an anaero-bic digestion process is aboutgood land stewardship and re-duction of potential waste,” saysNavaratnasamy. “Ultimately, thiscan also translate into less costand higher profit potential. That

combination of environmentaland economic benefits is whatwe’re looking to develop in all newoptions.”

However, because the processof anaerobic digestion usingbiodigesters is in the early stagesof adoption, there are many im-portant questions to answer be-fore digestate can be effectivelyand widely used in Alberta. Theseinclude pinpointing how digestateis different from other forms ofmanure, what this means for landapplication, what this means forgreenhouse gas emissions and,ultimately, what are the best waysto use this resource in differentcropping systems. ARD and oth-ers are looking into these ques-tions to help provide livestockoperations with information theycan use to support their decisionmaking and strategies.

A large study being led by Agri-culture and Agri-Food Canada,with ARD as a partner, includes anumber of components aimed atinvestigating uses of the diges-tate by-product and expandingthe biogas industry in Alberta.

Nelson is currently working onresearch that is studying thevalue of digestate. In this study,manure from a beef cattle opera-tion near Vegreville is being usedto produce biogas and the by-product digestate, and then ap-plied to fields used to grow barley.The digestate is applied as aslurry, a solid separated product,and a pelletized product. Resultsare being compared to solid ma-nure to allow for assessments ofwhich strategies work betterunder different circumstances.

The study also includes acomponent focused on monitor-ing greenhouse gases emissionsinvolved in the different digestatemanagement approaches.

“Although bio-digesters are notyet commonly adopted in West-ern Canada, there is a growinginterest every year and typically afew new operations every coupleyears are making the investmentto get involved,” says Navarat-nasamy. “The best initial fit ap-pears to be for beef cattleoperations as they produce mostof the available biomass in theform of manure and this sector iswhere virtually successful biodi-gester adoption in the provincehas occurred for the purpose ofproducing renewable energy.”

Against the current backdropof the push to more sustainableagricultural systems and renew-able energy sources, biogas pro-duction is an emerging optionthat is generating attention.
