Variable rate fertilization (VRF)has the potential to improve eco-nomic crop returns by optimizingfertilizer efficiency and reducingenvironmental impacts such as ni-trate leaching and nitrous oxideemissions associated with fertil-izer use.

VRF is technically feasible withdirect seeding and fertilizer equip-ment available to Alberta farmers,but research is needed on how todevelop field-specific fertilizer pre-scriptions.

A VRF research project, led byAlberta Agriculture and Rural De-velopment (ARD) and funded bythe Alberta Crop Industry Devel-opment Fund, Alberta InnovatesBioSolutions and Alberta CanolaProducers Commission, is cur-rently underway.

The project outcomes willhopefully assist farmers and in-dustry agronomists to develop ef-fective field-specific,science-based fertilizer prescrip-tion maps in the future.

“To make optimum use of VRFtechnology we must understandhow soil physical and chemicalcharacteristics and plant availablesoil nutrients vary with landscapeposition,” says Ross McKenzie,agronomy research scientist withARD. “We must also understandhow crops respond to nitrogen (N)and other fertilizers over changinglandscapes. It is also important tounderstand the consistency ofcrop responses from year to yearwith variable environmental con-ditions.”

million acres of annually seededcrop land. Every field is unique.This means simple and effectivemethods are required for produc-ers and crop advisors to developappropriate field specific fertilizerprescription maps.

“Crop yield maps are easilygenerated from on-board yieldmonitoring software on most newcombines, but crop yield oftendoes not correlate well with fertil-izer response,” says Mike Bevans,agriculture engineer with ARD.“This is because crop response isstrongly influenced by other phys-ical and chemical soil factors aswell as environmental factorssuch as weather.”

Identifying “field managementzones” within a field is a criticalstep when shifting from uniform

field management to the site-spe-cific management required to op-timize VRF. “The adoption of ‘fieldmanagement’ zones in WesternCanada has been very slow dueto limited field research and thecomplexities of identifying uniquefield management zones,” saysMcKenzie. “To address this knowl-edge and practice deficiency, ateam of ARD researchers are con-ducting field research trials.”

“The objective of this project isto determine the best approach todevelop VFP fertilizer prescriptionmaps based on detailed evalua-tion of fertilizer response in fieldswith varying topography,” says Be-vans.

In 2011, five fields were inten-sively studied. Research siteswere located on an irrigated field

near Lethbridge and on drylandfields in the Lethbridge, Magrathand Claresholm areas as wellnear Vegreville. At each site asample strip of land was selectedwith the cooperating farmer.Twelve to 16 bench mark siteswere selected in each field andsoil samples were taken fromeach bench mark site to evaluatesoil fertility, physical, chemical andtopographical properties/charac-teristics. Soil samples were ana-lyzed for plant available nitrogen,phosphorus, potassium, sulphur,and micronutrients. Soils werealso analyzed for sand, silt andclay content, salt levels, soil or-ganic matter and pH. Along theentire transect in each field, six Nfertilizer treatments from 0 to 150kg/ha rates were applied, urea

and ESN fertilizers were com-pared, and treatments of phos-phorus, potassium, sulphur andmicronutrients were applied.

The crop grown on the transectstrip was the same grown by thefarmer each year. Crop yield andgrain quality characteristics werethen determined for all fertilizertreatments at all bench mark lo-cations. Yield maps and topogra-phy maps were also generated foreach field.

The initial results of the re-search project, including the cropresponse to various fertilizer treat-ments will be presented and dis-cussed at the Agronomy Updateconference in Red Deer on Janu-ary 17 and 18, 2011. The study willcontinue in 2012 and 2013.

Alberta’s agriculture producersare encouraged to take advan-tage of the Growing Forwardbusiness opportunity program tohelp transform existing opera-

tions or pursue new ventures tocapitalize on changes in the mar-ketplace and consumer de-mands.

The business opportunity

grant program is targeted at Al-berta’s primary agriculture pro-ducers and producer groupsadapting their business to meetchanging market and consumer

demands. New entrants to the in-dustry starting up a primary pro-duction business venture arealso eligible.

The grants support contractingservices that contribute to mak-ing informed and calculated busi-ness decisions to take a newbusiness direction. Examples ofeligible expenses include oppor-tunity assessments, market re-search, business managementconsulting or coaching for a newdirection, business and market-ing plans, and mentoring for de-veloping or diversifying a farmingoperation.

Business opportunity applica-tions are supported on a cost-shared basis. Grants cover 75per cent of eligible expenses forapproved activities and appli-cants cover 25 per cent, withgrants awarded up to a maximumof $30,000 per applicant.

Business opportunity grantsare issued on a first-come, first-served basis, as per programterms and conditions and limitedfunding. Producers are encour-aged to apply soon to take ad-vantage of the program.

Applicants must first be regis-tered with Alberta’s Growing For-

ward initiative, then contact anAgriculture and Rural Develop-ment new venture specialist tosubmit a program application andbudget that outlines how thegrant will help their business re-spond to market demands.

For the second year in a row,North American beef producersare experiencing high cattleprices. An increase in export de-mand, leaves cattle markets look-ing strong for beef producers wellinto the future.

The drought in key cattle areasof the United States has meantanother year of falling U.S. cattlenumbers. Canadian and U.S. cowherd liquidation over the pastyears has led to shrinking feedercattle supplies all across NorthAmerica.

“All of this works to create ahealthy market for North Ameri-can cattle,” says Grant Lastiwka,grazing/forage/beef specialistwith Alberta Agriculture and RuralDevelopment (ARD).

Other industry experts agree.According to Randy Blach, exec-utive vice president of CattleFax,“…cattle prices are going to gethigher…."

In order to manage the currentopportunities in the cattle busi-ness, producers also need to beaware of the risks associated witha favorable market. In the lastCattlemen magazine DebbieMcMillan, beef market analyst,wrote, “along with this optimism,the biggest risks to the marketare the Canadian dollar uncer-tainty and the instability of globalmarkets.” Beef producer under-standing and management of op-portunities and risks, are going tobe the keys to their potential prof-its and profit sustainability in thecurrent market.

“The Alberta beef producer isnever typical,” says Lastiwka.“Each operation has different ad-vantages and disadvantages,strengths and weaknesses.These individual differences arethe reason each beef producerneeds to consider and evaluatetheir own operation.” After thisanalysis is complete, “unique” de-cisions, strategies, and actionscan be wisely carried out for themost successful outcomes.

As part of the analysis, it is im-portant to break down the “cattlebusinesses” you are in. Withinevery cattle operation are a num-ber of enterprises (ie. cow/calf toweaning, hay or silage, winterfeed/grazing systems, etc.). Eachadds to the bottom line or takesaway from it. Some have to bedone to continue, others may not.Evaluating each enterprise ontheir cost and returns is a crucialstep. By knowing which enter-prise or potential “profit centre” is

making or losing money, changescan be prioritized, and alterna-tives considered.

After this detailed evaluationprocess, managers who want toprofit from current beef industryopportunities have well-re-searched, diverse options onwhich to base their decision-mak-ing. Some management ques-tions beef producers may want toask themselves include:

• Should we maintain cownumbers, expand, or capture eq-uity by selling out at a high price?

• If expanding, should thecalving season be later so morecows can be calved easier?

• Should heifer replacementsbe retained, bought, or developedand sold?

• Can backgrounded calves beeconomically retained through allor part of the winter?

• If calves are retained whatrisk tools are available to ensurea price in advance?

• If costs are too high to back-ground calves in traditional ways,are alternatives available withlower yardage costs?

• What forage quality isneeded, and from what foragetype, to reduce high cost grainuse in background rations?

• What pasture types give thegreatest productivity per acre foryearlings?

• What pasture managementsystems create the lowest risk andgreatest pounds of beef/acre?

• Instead of ownership, is cus-tom grazing of yearlings the bestprofit generator?

Producers interested in learn-ing more about management de-cisions to manage theopportunities and risks in thebeef business are encouraged toattend one of the upcoming Cow-Calfenomics 2011 workshopsbeing held across the province.Sessions are scheduled for: De-cember 5 in Grande Prairie; De-cember 6 in Westlock; and,December 7 in Bonnyville.
