Welcome to the ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress 2017 - Letter of introduction
"
" Dear ITA member nation,AFTES is honoured to be presenting its candidature to organise the 2017 edition of the World Tunnel Congress and the ITA General Assembly. It has been 33 years since the ITA General Assembly in Nice in 1981. Ever since, AFTES has consistently demonstrated its ability to organise an international congress every three years. The launch of Grand Paris Express is an excellent opportunity for us to welcome you once again, with a 2017 Congress on the theme “Cities Underground: sharing and integration”.We will be delighted to organise a meeting focusing on knowledge and techniques, capable of creating people-friendly underground space and cities extending below the ground. Learning together and sharing what we learn are core values for us.The Congress will be held from May 8-11 2017 in Paris at the CNIT conference centre.
In addition to technical talks and a wide-ranging exhibition, our sponsors will be organising events in the “innovation agora” throughout the Congress, providing insights into innovations in their fields of expertise, technology, products and equipment. We very much hope to welcome you to Paris in 2017. Please feel free to let us know of your comments. We extend our warmest greetings to you as an ITA member nation.
Yours very sincerely,
Yann Leblais, AFTES President

World Tunnel Congress 2017 - Topic
This keynote theme will combine the convergence of techniques to master the construction of underground structures and the convergence of professions to make the underground space more human-friendly.Public sessions on ‘Cities Underground’ will address integrating the underground space into urban development and underground infrastructure.
This theme will also serve as a link between different Congress sessions covering the following topics: > Technological developments in underground works > Approaches to risks and uncertainties > Developments in contractual practices > Allocation of visible and invisible urban space > Making underground space human-friendly
Training sessions will be organised in collaboration with ITA to ensure an optimal programme consistency and meet the needs and expectations of the professional community.
‘Cities Underground’ will be the focus of the closing session on Thursday morning
WTC 20178 -11 MAY 2017 - CNIT PARIS 43rd ITA General Assembly CITIES UNDERGROUND: SHARING AND INTEGRATION 12
World Tunnel Congress 2017 - An innovative Congress
The congress will feature an innovative special Thursday morning session:“Converging views on urban and underground development”. Nowadays, politicians are the most enthusiastic about going underground: they will express their growing awareness of sustainable development considerations. One further issue to be addressed is about taking ownership of space and allocating space: demographers and town planners will respond on plot optimisation.Such urban development requires structural creativity, which can only be achieved through combining the efforts of engineers and architects: these will present their concept of an underground space incorporating new dimensions and matters at stake. In view of this, our intent in closing the Congress, in association with ITACUS, is to share this new perspective through a debate in which all key stakeholders and decision-makers involved in Cities Underground will take part.
Our sponsors will organise events in the ‘innovation agora’ throughout the Congress, offering insights into innovations pertaining to their technological expertise.

Objectifs de mises en serviceThe main objectives of the project are as follows:• Improving everyday transport, breaking with the hub-and-spoke model, facilitating orbital
travel around the city centre and cutting on car usage.• Supporting economic development through interconnecting regional centres of excellence,
TGV high-speed train stations and airports, and facilitating connections with other French main cities.
• Controlling urban development, structuring the development around denser urban entities, containing urban sprawl and offering better quality of life.
• Providing access to areas not serviced by mass public transport.• Implementing sustainable development by reducing pollutants and greenhouse gases
emissions, and improving air quality.

Underground spaces• Ever since the 1960s, French engineers and architects have
worked together to build major underground stations for the RER express lines.
• This cooperation has extended to address other urban functions:
◊ Marseille water treatment plant ◊ SYCTOM underground incinerator ◊ Climespace cooling station, Paris ◊ Grande Bibliothèque library, Paris ◊ Numerous underground car parks• Caverns for hydroelectric projects, oil & gas storage and
waste repositories.
Tunnels• 640 km of tunnels, including 900 road tunnels – 100 of which are
over 500 m long – and 1300 rail tunnels.• Five major binational tunnels: the Channel Tunnel (50.5 km)
between France and the United Kingdom, the Mont Blanc road tunnel (11.6 km), the Fréjus road tunnel (13 km) and Fréjus rail tunnel (13.7 km) between France and Italy, and the Figueras rail tunnel (8.3 km) between France and Spain.
• Paris has 220 km of metro lines and 76 km of RER express suburban rail lines.
• Lille (metro network totalling 45 km), Lyon (30 km), Marseille (22 km), Toulouse (28 km), Rennes (9.4 km).
• A large number of long hydraulic galleries, connected to hydropower facilities: the Isère-Arc and Arc-Isère upstream and downstream galleries are all in excess of 10 km.
• Numerous underground water supply and wastewater mains networks.
