You’ve Got Stamina!Stamina noun | stam· i· na | \ 'sta-mə-nə\: The ability or strength to keep doing something for a long time.

Have you ever heard the phrase “Practice makes perfect?” Athletes practice often to perfect their skills. It’s no different for the brain. We must exercise our brain. We can make our brains stronger and smarter by pushing ourselves to learn new things, even when it’s hard or we don’t feel like it.

When we work to make our brain stronger, we are building something called stamina. Stamina helps us make our brains smarter and better able to learn new things. It also helps give us a boost when our work is hard and we feel like giving up.

Here are a few easy ways to exercise your brain to build your stamina:

1. Start a good conversation:Ask a friend or family member about something that you’re curious about. For example, if you are interested in basketball, try asking about the rules of the game or how to shoot a basket. Listen closely to what they have to say and ask a lot of questions. This will allow you to learn many new things.

2. Read a good book:Books help build your vocabulary by teaching you new words. Reading also builds your brain’s imagination. Challenge yourself to read a little bit every day. Ask your family to read with you so you can take a break once in a while.

3. Play games: Yes, games! Games are a perfect way to exercise your brain because they make you think. For example, games like puzzles and word searches challenge you to accomplish a goal, but you have to think about how you will win. This is called strategy, which means thinking of a plan in order to accomplish a goal.

4. Don't stop learning:What happens when an athlete stops exercising for a long time? Usually, they forget their skills and lose their strength. This can happen to the brain, too, if we stop learning. Try to learn something new every day, even if it’s something small like learning a fun fact.

These are just a few simple ways that we can exercise our brain daily. Trying one of these activities each day can help your brain become stronger, smarter and healthier.

Get ready for college today! You might think that college is a long way off. But, it is never too early to start getting ready for your future.

Here are some ways you can start getting ready for college this year.

Shalyn, KindergartenShalyn isn’t sure what she wants to be when she grows up. That’s ok. She has a lot of time to choose! Shalyn knows she loves to learn about math. Math is important, and she will probably use it in her future career. Being good at math might even earn her a scholarship someday!

CostCollege costs money…but it's worth it!In college, you will learn about your future career. You will also receive a certificate or degree. A certificate or degree will show employers (the people who will give you a job) that you are ready to work.

Do you want a car when you grow up? What about an apartment or house? These things cost money, and so does going to college. You will have to pay money to earn your certificate or degree, but it’s worth it. After you graduate from college, you can get a career that pays you money.

My Dream for the FutureWhat is your dream for your future? What do you want to do when you grow up? A vision board is a fun way to picture your goals and dreams. Use this section, or another piece of paper, to draw the things you picture yourself doing and learning after high school.

ScholarshipsThere are a lot of ways to pay for college! Most people spend some of their own money for college. That’s why it’s important to start saving money now. But, you can get help paying for college, too. Have you ever heard of a scholarship? You can earn a scholarship for getting good grades, or for activities you do like art, music or sports.

You will apply for scholarships when you are older, but you can start practicing now. Read how below!

Scholarships ChecklistHere’s what you can do now to help you earn a scholarship in the future:

Work hard and always do your best.

Listen and follow directions. These are skills you will use your whole life. Practice every day so you can be really good at these skills.

Don’t give up. School can be fun, but it can be hard, too. When you don’t understand something right away, that’s ok. Keep trying and try to stay positive.

Ask for help. Everyone needs help sometimes. Maybe you feel sad or have a hard time with math. Do not be afraid to ask your teacher, parents or a school counselor for help.

What is a Career?A career is a job that you get after you finish school. A career is important because it is a way to take care of yourself and your family in the future. Your career should be something you like to do. That means you will earn money for doing something you like! You should start planning for your career now so you can be successful in the future.

Ask yourself four questions about what you want to be when you grow up.

What do you want to be when you grow up? There are a lot of jobs to choose from. Learn about jobs in Indiana on page 14.

What subjects in school would be helpful for that job? Read the article on page 10 to learn more about this.

What skills or traits would be helpful for this job? Learn about character traits that will help you now and in the future on the next page.

How much school do you need? Your career will depend on how much school you finish. Most jobs require you to go to college after high school. Some jobs need you to go to college for one or two years. Some jobs will need you to go to four or more years. Learn more about college on page 4.

How can you get ready for your career right now? One way is to work on character traits or skills you will need in your career. You will probably need a lot of skills in your future career.

Learning: Be open to learning about new things every day. You might have a subject that is your favorite, but pay attention during all subjects.
