Introducing the After-the-Lesson Self-Assessment Bulletin Board KitPriortoalesson,useadryerasemarkertowriteaclear,measurablelearninggoalorobjectiveontheBanner header.DistributetheName Sticks andalloweachstudenttopersonalizehisorherStickwithdecorations.
Directstudents’attentiontotheAfter-the-Lesson Self-Assessment Bannerandreassurethemthateveryonelearnsatadifferentrate.Discusswithstudentsthattheywillbereflectingontheirunderstandingoflearninggoalsandobjectivesandmonitoringtheirprogress.Remindstudentsthatalearninggoalorobjectiveidentifieswhattheywilllearnorbeabletodobytheendofthelesson.Attheendofeachlesson,theywillratetheirunderstandingofthegoalsandobjectives,whichwillhelpyoutoteachthem.PointingtotheBanner,readthefourindicatorsandprovideanexampleofeachindicatorwithinthecontextoftheobjective.ExplaintostudentsthecriteriaforchoosinganumberedStick Holderfortheobjective:1. Createaclassroomcultureinwhichstudentsfeelsafeself-assessingandsharingtheirhonestprogresstowardlearninggoals.Shareatimeinwhichyouweren’tabletomastersomethingonyourveryfirsttryandneededadditionalpracticetoreassurethem.Explainthathonestratingshelpyouteachbyseeingwhattheyunderstandandfindingoutareasinwhichtheyneedmorehelp.
After-the-Lesson Self-Assessment Procedures Attheendofalesson,remindstudentsoftheobjective.Thenaskthemtoself-assesstheirprogresstowardthatobjectivebyimplementingtheThink-Pair-Shareprocedure.Allowstudents30secondstosilentlyandindependentlydeterminetheirratings.Assignpartners,thenaskstudentstoexplaintheirratingstotheirpartners.Next,havethemsharetheirratingswiththeclass,givingthemtheopportunitytoaskclarifyingquestions.Finally,tellstudentstoplacetheirName SticksintheappropriateHolders ontheBanner.Youcanchoosetoincorporatethisprocedureintoyourdailyroutine.
After-the-Lesson Self-Assessment Exit Pass Topromoteadeeperlevelofself-assessmentandtoincorporateawrittencomponent,usetheAfter-the-Lesson Self-Assessment Exit Pass ReproduciblealongwiththeName Sticksorasastand-aloneassessment.MakeenoughcopiesoftheAfter-the-Lesson Self-Assessment Exit Pass Reproducibleforeachstudenttohaveonepass,andcutthemapart.Eitherpre-printthelessonobjectiveatthetopofeachExitPassorinstructstudentstocopytheobjective.Youcanmakeanenlargedcopyofanexitpassonchartpaper,oruseanenlargedelectronicversiononaninteractivewhiteboardoroverheadprojector.ModelcompletinganExitPass,thinkingaloudasyouexplainandjustifythevariousratings.Forexample,say,“IchoseNumber3becauseIunderstandthelesson.IknowthatIamabletoaddandsubtractfractionsonmyown.IamnotaNumber4becauseIdon’tfeelcomfortableteachingothersyet.”
DistributetheExitPasses.Writeinthelessonobjectiveontheblankline,instructingstudentstocopythelessonobjectiveontheirownExitPasses.Next,directstudentstowritetheirnames,circletheirratings,andexplainandjustifytheirchoices.Tellthemtorefertoyourmodelasanexample.CollecttheExitPassesuponcompletion.
