H illel Academy’s After School Clubs and Athletics program provide exactly the kind of creative and nurturing outlet that our students need at the end of a productive day at school. We provide a broad

range of activities that will appeal to our diverse student body for students entering grades kindergarten through twelfth grade. Most of our activities take place at our main campus and range from: Torah learning, to intramural sports leagues, to arts and crafts, math, ballet, and much more. We also utilize the JCC’s faculties as well for a few of our programs. Our goal is to create an environment where our students can cultivate their unique talents and interests in a nurturing environment and leave feeling excited and refreshed for their next day of school.

After School Clubs Grades K-12

“After school clubs

offer such a great way

for the kids to pursue

extracurricular

interests and

become more well-

rounded without hav-

ing to look elsewhere

for those

opportunities.”

- Maxine Kisilinsky,

parent of four

Hillel students

Learning Clubs Torah is the bedrock of our

school and our daily focus and we are proud to offer

various Torah learning opportunities for our students

in grades four through twelve. Together with mem-

bers of our Judaic faculty, students have the oppor-

tunity to learn subjects such as Talmud, Chumash,

practical daily laws, and various intellectual discussion

topics. These learning clubs supplement what is

taught during the day. Students are

offered the opportunity to

write divirei Torah, share

their learning and take

part in a syium after

completing a text. If

your son or daughter

wants to go beyond

the classroom with

their Torah knowledge,

these clubs are for them!

Cross Country Running One of our more

recent additions is the cross country running pro-

gram. Our middle school students compete

against other local private schools with seven

races each fall at the Schenley Oval trail three

kilometer course. The course begins at the

Bartlett Street Park entrance and finishes on the

other side of the road. Students practice two to

three times a week as a team. Additionally, we

also offer the Cross Country Club.

This club trains together both

on the streets of Pitts-

burgh and on the track

and trails at Schenley

Oval. The club season

concludes with an op-

tional local 5k race. This

club provides a good way to

stay in shape!

Intramural

Sports

Leagues

Our intramu-

ral leagues are

some of the most

popular afterschool clubs.

Students in grades four through

twelve have the opportunity to

take part in hockey, football and

basketball intermural leagues.

These leagues meet in both the

Hillel and the Jewish Community

Center gymnasiums. The leagues

are complete with drafts, jerseys

and referees. Our leagues are sea-

sonal therefore

our students

have the

oppor-

tunity

to

par-

ticipate

in more

than one league

during the academic year.

“My son learned valua-

ble skills while taking

part in Chess club, and

his instructors were

always patient and kind

when interacting with all

of the kids.”

-Shelley Itskowitz, Parent

of four Hillel students

“My favorite club this

past year was dance. I

loved how we were given

the opportunity to

choreograph our own

dances. Dance was a

great outlet after school

and I looked forward to

it every week.”

- Avital Segal, 7th Grade

Days, Times, & Schedule

After school clubs meet Monday

through Thursday, depending on the

age of the child, and often have two

Other Hillel also offers a variety of unique clubs

aimed at enriching our students’ creativity while nur-

turing their curiosities. These extra curricular activi-

ties include Hiking, Karate, Reptiles, Model United

Nations, Mock Trial, Tennis, Middos, Chess and

more!

Ryer Martial Arts Academy is Pittsburgh's leader in

after-school martial arts programs. They operate a

full-time dojo on Centre Avenue in Shadyside for the last

ten years and they are proud to partner with the Hillel

Academy of Pittsburgh to bring martial arts to their after-

Fine Arts Hillel Academy offers an array of fine arts

activities to help cultivate

our students’ knowledge

of the arts. These clubs

range from arts and crafts

to music to ballet and so

much more! One of our

newer clubs is our music

program which is offered

through the Duquesne University School of Music.

Through age appropriate activities that include singing, move-

ment, games, and other engaging lessons, students will be

exposed to musical concepts such as rhythm, tonality, steady

beat, fast vs. slow, loud vs. soft, etc. Activities and lessons

used in the course will help reinforce classroom learning and

will provide an enjoyable experience for students during their

academic studies.

NEW for 2014-2015:

Snack & Chill

At 3:50pm daily, all club participants in grades k-5

who are signed up for clubs that day go to a class-

room for a healthy, nutritious snack and time to

relax before clubs begin at 4:05.

Basketball Travel Team Not only is this one

of our more popular after school activities, but the

basketball team has been a part of Hillel Academy for

decades. Both the high school and middle school

teams play their home games at the JCC. Our boys

high school team competes in the Greater Pittsburgh

Independent Basketball League (GPIBL) and in the JCC

Synagogue League. Depending on the year, the high

school either competes as a JV or V team. Regardless,

the team practices three to four days a week. Our

middle school team competes against other local pri-

vate schools. They practice twice a week.

“My favorite extracurricular activity was the basketball. Not only did I become

a better player I became a better person. Coach Sol Horvitz taught me to be

responsible, hard-working, disciplined, and a leader. Without Hillel and all of

the devoted staff and administrators none of that would have been possible. I

have all my high school jerseys hanging from the walls in my room because I

am a proud Hillel Academy Alumni.” -Josh Brent, Class of 2013
