CARS can’t fly - but that didn’tstop two scenic flight pilots inQueenstown, NZ from racing avehicle down the ZQN runway inthe middle of the night. The pair were spotted by staffand also recorded by securitycameras around midnight on 09May after apparently gainingaccess to the runway using theirairside security passes. Reports don’t say what speedthey reached during the stunt, which was considered to beserious because of the possibilitythe car could have left debris onthe runway and jeopardisedaviation safety. “They put people’s lives at riskand abused their accessprivileges,” said Queenstownairport ceo Steve Sanderson, confirming that the pilots hadbeen banned from the airport forthe next two years.

Domestic ‘holding strong’ FEDERAL tourism ministerMartin Ferguson has hailed figuresfrom the govt’s National VisitorSurvey which he says showdomestic tourism is performingwell “despite challenges from acompetitive international market”. The figures indicate positivegrowth in the Mar 2010 quarterfor both visitor expenditure andday trip visitors, along with asmall recovery in business travel. However the growth was mostlydriven by day trippers - up 9% -with domestic visitor nightsactually 1% lower than theprevious corresponding period. And although domestic businesstravel has recovered from lowsplumbed during last year’s GFC,

it’s still only just ahead of whereit was a year ago - and the long-term trend for most measures ofdomestic travel continuesdownwards. For the year to 31 Mar domesticovernights were down 3% andvisitor expenditure remainedsteady at $42.9 billion. Ferguson said the industry “nowhas to rise to the challenge ofencouraging visitors to stayovernight”, with key initiativesincluding the government’s ‘NoLeave No Life’ campaign alongwith the new Tourism Australia‘There’s Nothing Like Australia’promo, which includes a scheduleof domestic marketing activity. He said the rollout of theNational Tourism AccreditationFramework would help businessescompete for the domestic marketon the basis of quality “and givethem the opportunity to convertday visitors to overnight visitors”. HOWEVER the lacklustre longterm domestic performance is incontrast to the figures foroutbound travel by Australians inthe report, which shows thatdespite the economic crisisAussies are travelling overseasmore than ever. For the 12 months to 31 DecAustralians aged 15 years and overtook 5.6m int’l trips, spending atotal of 112 million nights abroad. The average overseas tripduration was 20 nights, with themost popular destination beingNew Zealand at 16%, followed bythe USA and Canada (11%),Indonesia (9%) and the UK (7%). More than half of the overseastravel (55%) was for holidaypurposes - the full report is nowonline at www.ret.gov.au/tra.

and reserves,” she said. The new move will facilitate thedevelopment of landmarkoperations comparable with otherstates like Tasmania’s Bay of FiresWalk and WA’s Sal Salis Camp. Barnes highlighted a ‘Light toLight’ walk in Eden, Sydney’s GapBluff Precinct and the plannedrejuvenation of Jenolan CavesHouse as works in progress. “All development must be inline with the conservation valuesof each area,” she said. She conceded that the previouslegislation had made thedevelopment process harder forsuch properties as Emirates WolganValley Resort and Q Station.
