Aidan Miller’s piano coupled with his dark, expressive vocals create music that is fromthe soul and for the soul. BY JOSEPH BLAKE

AIDAN MILLER HAS LIVED IN VICTORIA FOR ONLY 18 MONTHS, buthis soulful music has already created quite a buzz locally. The singer-songwriterand keyboardist performs with The Riverside every Thursday night at Bard andBanker with Grapes of Wrath’s Tom Hooper on bass and 54-40’s Matt Johnson ondrums. And every Wednesday night Aidan Miller and the Burn, featuring bassistSteve Taddei and drummer Matthew Pease, appear at Swans. Classically trained in voice and piano as a child and a graduate of York University

with a major in jazz piano and improvisation, Miller was a fixture on the NiagaraPeninsula music scene before moving to Victoria. He toured Malaysia and Thailandin 2008, released his debut CD in 2010, and played regularly in a handful of St.Catherines, Ontario, bands featuring pop, rock and reggae cover versions as well asoriginal songs.Miller’s eponymously titled CD showcases a diversity of influences from haunt-

ing, neo-soul grooves to piano-driven rockers to melodic ballads. He’s got a dark, expressive voice with enough grit to effectively cover Tom Waits’s Way Down inthe Hole and counter the sweetness of ethereal ballads like Hanging on to AlmostGone.“From my upbringing in the music of the church and gospel music,” says the

bushy-bearded musician, “to my jazz training and love of all music that is soulful,I make music from the soul and for the soul. That said, the music I’ve been workingon lately has taken on a more electronic and ambient vibe.”In addition to his local weekly gigs, Aidan has played with Victoria standouts Dan

Lapp, Sean Drabbit, Damian Graham and Nick LaRiviere and worked briefly in thestudio with Joby Baker on jazz trombonist LaRiviere’s recording.“I recorded on the Mainland with my good friend Carl Davis and will be recording

some more of my own material soon, hopefully with [Victoria guitarist andproducer] Adam Sutherland,” Miller explains. “I love being in the studio, but thesense of community you get when playing live still appeals to me the most.”A sports fan who enjoys playing and watching baseball, hockey and basketball,

the charismatic musician is also interested in politics and social issues. He likespolitical thrillers on television and at the movies and calls Salman Rushdie’s TheGround Beneath Her Feet, his 1999 epic rock music novel “a great book.”“My improvisational training still gets used a lot in playing and writing and has

helped shape my concept of harmony and rhythm. And my musical tastes are wideranging,” Miller continues. “Right now I’m listening to Ray Lamontagne, TaylorSwift, Allen Stone, James Blake, Nina Simone, Snarky Puppy, Foo Fighters, ThomYorke, Fiona Apple and Ray Charles. I really like a lot of music being made bywomen in recent years, musicians like Lorde, Adele, Feist and Serena Ryder. Womenof substance with something to say!”Asked to name songwriters who inspire him, Aidan cites Tom Waits “for the sheer

breadth of his career, how different his music has become over the years, and howhe’s never willing to sacrifice his artistic integrity.”Miller also appreciates the late Nick Drake “for always bearing his soul in hon-

esty” and Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach “for always getting it right as a performer, songwriter and producer.”Aidan lives with his wife, Alexis, in the Mosaic building, “a perfect location for

a couple who walk everywhere, equi-distant to Cook Street Village and the InnerHarbour.” His favourite places to eat? “Be Love or Green Cuisine for healthy eats,Floyd’s for a mammoth breakfast, The Mint for late night, Marsala Bites for Indianand Prima Strada for pizza.”

THOUGH THEY HAIL FROM THE METROPOLIS OF Southern Ontario,three-piece Elliott Brood is an important part of the Canadian alt-country land-scape. Since their first EP in 2004, they’ve grown into a national presence, withtheir 2008 record Mountain Meadows being shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prizeand 2011’s Days Into Years picking up a Juno award for Roots & TraditionalAlbum of the Year. In January the band begins touring the US and Canada in support of their latest

release, Work and Love. Recorded in the Tragically Hip’s Bathhouse Studio, therecord cements the band’s progression from bluegrass and roots to a more countryrock sound. “I think it’s a natural evolution that’s just sort of happened to usthrough playing together,” said guitarist and vocalist Casey Laforet. “When westarted it was mostly Mark and myself playing acoustically, and as we learned toplay more instruments it got rockier and louder. We tried the songs out in a bunchof ways, playing them quieter, but this album felt like it needed a lot more electricenergy.”With that in mind, Casey and his bandmates Mark Sasso (guitar, vocals) and

Stephen Pitkin (percussion) went outside the band for the first time to hireWeakerthans & Attack in Black producer Ian Blurton. “We were a little nervousabout it at first, because he comes from a school of heavier music and weren’tsure whether he really wanted to work with us,” said Casey. “But it was justamazing, there’s a lot of his influence all over these songs. I don’t think I’d reallybent a string on a guitar on any record until this one.”The record’s lyrics focus on the lives of the two songwriters and their thoughts

towards growing up. “I think probably the main word would be nostalgia,” saidCasey. “Getting old, looking back a little bit. The loss of innocence, loss of youth, working, getting your heart broken.”The Work and Love tour hits Victoria in the second week of February.

According to Casey, we can look forward to not just the new tunes but also freshtakes on their back catalog thanks to pedal steel player Aaron Goldstein (City andColour), who features prominently on the record and is also joining the band forthe tour. “Lots of old songs we haven’t played live before, and as usual lots ofenergy, a lot of sweat.” Though they’re no strangers to the West Coast, Elliott Brood is looking forward

to coming back. “It feels like it’s been forever. We always talk about the coastsbeing the best places in Canada to play, and there’s definitely a vibe that the restof the country doesn’t have. It’s a unique part of the world out there.

Why are you in Hawaii? My wife and band mate Antonia and I just had ourfirst child. Her name is Sasha. When Antonia wasabout Sasha's age (5 weeks) her parents took her toMaui to a special beach front condo complex calledPuamana. We are back in the same place a generationlater and Sasha's grandparents are reliving thosefabulous memories while we create our first of thesort. It's pretty awesome being here with a new born. She had her first dip in the ocean yesterday! How are you managing to mesh the rock androll lifestyle on the road with having a newbaby? The truth is, we aren't on the road. We are, however, playing shows locally with Thieves. And that'sdo-able as long as my mom is around to watch herfor an hour while Antonia and I take the stage. Isuppose we could tour with Sasha at this age as longas we had someone like her grandmother to help out.The grannies and babies tour, ha! Not bloody likely!! Tell us something about your TED talk. Whatsurprised you about it?The TEDx experience was great, but nerve rackingfor me. I think what surprised me was that everyone Itold of my nerves was like, "hey, you'll have no prob-lem, you are always on stage", but in reality I amnever on stage to talk! Speaking in long well thoughtout sentences? No way! Only singing and periodi-cally blabbing about a song or thanking the organiz-ers. And you are supposed to memorize the TEDtalk! Not me though, I have hundreds of songs mem-orized but ask me to memorize a 5 minute speech andI'll cry, in fact I believe I did at one point. So Icheated a little and had my speech on my laptopnearby. But in the end, I surprised myself and

adlibbed a fair bit. It felt fairly natural once I gotgoing. Also, talking about music, since you are in aband and everything, how would you describethe scene in Victoria? Are there any up andcoming acts you like? Thieves is a vessel for music I wrote over the pastfew years, and in order to pull it off, I've looked tothe young talent pool in this city for help. SamWeber, Hugh Mackie and Marshall Wildman arethree young and extremely talented musicians whomI've had the great pleasure of being able to colaboratewith on this Thieves stuff. They tour under the nameSam Weber and they are definitely a group to watchin 2015. Victoria is really quite rich with talentedmusicians. How would you describe the style of your owngroup, and what groups would you say areyour biggest influences?I'm a sucker for Coldplay. I saw them play their veryfirst show in North America at the CommodoreBallroom in Vancouver back when their first hit wasjust starting to blow up over here. The song Yellow. What an awesome song. That style of pop musiccombined with a little Radiohead darkness is where Idraw my inspiration from mostly.Tell us about being band of the month on theZone? The Zone at 91.3 is incredible for its support of localbands. Not only do they put local bands on stage inhigh quality venues like Distrikt night club, but theyactually PLAY that lucky band's music on the radiofor a month. It's very hard to get airplay on commer-cial radio, even just once, let alone to get rotation, soto have a commercial station in this city that will

actually spin a local band's track 2 or 3 times a dayfor a month straight is something no local musicianshould take for granted. Victoria's music scene isricher for it. What’s going on with the custom car cleaninggig these days? Do you still do house calls? With my long time band Jets Overhead on hiatus, Idecided to diversify my potential for revenue in thishard to compete music climate, and with my cousin, Istarted a mobile car detailing business called Super-bath. (superbath.ca). It solves a problem. That's themain reason it's working. People just don't like thehassle of having to drop their vehicle off somewhereto have it detailed. You don't have to anymore. Andwith state of the art steam cleaning technology, wemake it fast, eco friendly and highly effective detailing too.Thieves is actually a mix of a few different acts, can you break down for us how you all fittogether?Like I mentioned, Sam Weber and his band make upone half of the band, and most of the musicians playin my cover band (another revenue stream) calledThe Broken Strings. Our killer bass player JeffScotney, plays in both bands amongst other class actsin Victoria such as Kuba Oms and Quoia. Finally, is there anything you’d like to plug? Now’s your chance.Thieves have worked hard over the past severalmonths to finish our first EP. The recordings areready to go. So now we just have to decide how torelease it. I think we will have to press vinyl in thenew year. And it will be available on line viawearethieves.com. Coming soon so stay tuned!

AN INTERVIEWWITH

ADAM KITTREDGE OF THIEVES BY ADAM CANTOR

For this interview, I sent a fewquestions out to Hawaii for Victorianative Adam Kittredge. You mightremember him as one of the voicesin the Juno nominated band JetsOverhead. He now has a new project on the

go called Thieves. This group isgoing to be popular, so if you get onthe bandwagon now you will beable to lord it over your friends foryears to come. Thieves has a sound that is

upbeat, indy minded, and mirrorswell the sensibilities of the millen-nial zeitgeist. Kittredge himself is aguy who has all sorts of interestingthings going on. I tried to touch onsome of the cool highlights in thisinterview, but if you want more Isuggest you start by checking outhis band.

Note: Kittredge also has a coverband called the Broken Strings. They play regularly at Darcy’sWestshore and the Canoe Club.
