NABOTSIBENI (Ndhlovukazi), the late Queen-Regent of Swaziland, with a Princess of Swaziland.

SPECIMEN PAGE— BIO G RAPH Y

NABOTSIBENI.Nabotsibeni, of the Mdhluli section of the Swazi tribe, died at

the age of 80 years. She was the grandmother of Sobuza II. of Swaziland. H er husband died in the year 1890, and she ruled the Swazis as Queen Regent until 1922, when her grandson became of age to take his place at the head of the Swazis. H er son died young, leaving a baby boy— the present Sobuza II. She was a wonderful woman; a good, wise and tactful ruler. She avoided many issues which certainly would have been very disastrous for Swaziland. She had great faith in the late Queen Victoria and the British Government. Though uneducated, she was highly respected by all the High Commissioners of the Union and Territories of her time. She was not a Christian herself, but she always welcomed all missionaries who visited her country. She did much for the education of the Swazi children, and actually sent her grandson to Lovedale and later to the South African Native College for education. She was the founder of the Abantu Batho, Limited, a company which was established in 1912, and which prints the Abantu-Batho, an English-Bantu weekly newspaper in Johannesburg. This paper is still in existence, and has for many years been the mouthpiece of the Natives of South Africa. Since Nabotsibeni died there has been some trouble in. Swaziland, which necessitated the sending of a deputation to the King of the British Empire, headed by Sobuza himself. This deputation was followed by a case in the Privy Council. The Swazis lost the case and had to pay heavy costs.

Queen Nabotsibeni was known among her people as the Ndhlo- vukazi (the Elephant). She was never known to don European cloths, although she had many presents of fine clothes sent to her by the good Queen of England,

Mr. T. D. Mweli Skota P. 0. Box 57SS Johannesburg, South Africa

My dear Mr. Skota:

I have just received a copy of HThe African Yearly RegisterH-, edited and compiled by you. I want to thank you, on behalf of the Editorial Staff of the Journal of Negro Education, for sending us this volume. We shall review it in one of our subsequent issues and will send you a marked copy of the Journal in which the volume is reviewed. Moreover, I am requesting that our Library buy two copies of this volume.

As Editor of the Journal of Negro Education, I am very much interested in getting a descriptive and explanatory account of native education in South Africa. I wonder if it would be possible for you, or some one designated by you, to prepare an article of approximately 30.00 words describing and giving necessary statistics concerning native education in South Africa. I am sure that such an .article would not only be informing to the readers of our Journal but also interesting. Will you kindly advise us what assistance you can render in this connection.

"1 am'1 sending, under separate cover, the initial- issue * ■of the Journal of Negro Education. The articles therein will give you some idea of the type of contribution we shall expect.

Again thanking you for a copy of your book, I am,

Very truly yours,
