OBJECTIVES

COGNITIVE:Learn the rich cultural heritage and

literature of Africa.  APPRECIATIVE:Appreciate learning the cultural

heritage of Africa as an important tool for understanding its literature.

Africa is the world's second-largest and second most-populous continent, after Asia.

•It has a billion people (as of 2009) in 61 territories, it accounts for about 14.72% of the World's human population. •The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

there are 53 countries, including Madagascar and various island groups, associated with the continent.

Africa, particularly central eastern Africa, is widely regarded within the scientific community to be the origin of humans and the Hominidae tree (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors

Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones.

African agricultureAfrican agricultures have for long been western-oriented. Thus, focusing on cocoa, coffee, banana, orange, yams, pineapples, and many non-native fruits (non native as in Asia, Europe, America, Australia) etc.

African woodsAfrican exotic woods have been exploited for centuries. Especially Ebene and many hardwoods. Both Congos are nowadays large wood exporters.

• African MineralAfrica, the 2nd largest continent has large reserves of minerals, being the leading area for diamonds, cobalt, uranium, and many other rare minerals.

African oilAfrican oil take growing importance, mainly after the 2003 oil crisis and recent oil reserves discoveries. Sudan, and Nigeria are the main oil producers. China owns 45% of Nigeria's oil production, and 40% of Sudanese ones. Oil is both provided by continental and offshore productions.

Fresh waterAfrica owns lot of lakes and rivers, allowing in some small fishing industry.

OceanAtlantic and Indian allow some further production, from fishing, to mining and offshore oil productions.

*African literature consists of a body of work in different languages and various genres, ranging from oral literature to literature written in colonial languages (French, Portuguese, and English).

*Oral literature, including stories, dramas, riddles, histories, myths, songs, proverbs, and other expressions, is frequently employed to educate and entertain children. Oral histories, myths, and proverbs additionally serve to remind whole communities of their ancestors' heroic deeds, their past, and the precedents for their customs and traditions.

* Essential to oral literature is a concern for presentation and oratory. Folktale tellers use call-response techniques. A griot (praise singer) will accompany a narrative with music.
