17FUTURE

DEVELOPMENT

Ongoing priorities

1. Digitize content on ongoing basis; retrodigitize as possible

2. Continue to enhance sites as possible

3. Consider new website partners with more robust platforms

New alternatives

Public Knowledge Project/Open Journal System

More than 400 African journals hosted

Potential for partner journals or their hosts to sponsor new journal sites?

18CONTENT

RENDERING

Advantages of HTML Natural language of Web; easy

for computer to read; loads quickly

No need to download Adobe or large article files

Easier hyperlinking and searching

Using XML to render HTML allows for even better searching, navigation, and can be repurposed for PMC for example

Advantages of PDFs Reader comfort, as identical

to print; retains formatting and pagination

Easier, fewer pages to print

PDFs can be made searchable; meta data can be digitized

If producing print, no other output needed

But added expense if not printing

BECOMING INDEXED BY SEARCH ENGINES

The leading search engines—Google, Bing, Yahoo!—use crawlers to find pages and return search results.

Refer to Google SEO Starter Guide .

Submit site to Google. Pages linked from other search engine indexed pages do not

need to be submitted because they are found automatically.

Use Google Webmaster Tools to create and submit free XML sitemap feed to ensure that all pages are found.

Add keyword-rich text on website pages so as to match search queries; add relevant keywords to web page meta tags.

28

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (SEO)

Keywords

Choose 2-3 specific, targeted keywords (phrases) for site and each page

Add keywords into names of pages, such ashttp://www.journalname.com/keywords-phrase.html

Use keywords in your title tag

7%-10% of each page should consist of keywords

Backlinks

Links from partner sites and as many others as practicable

Develop content that can be shared virally Blogs (use subdomain of respective domain)

YouTube (second largest search engine after Google)

Flickr and Picasa (searched by Google Images)

29

ADDITIONAL WAYS TO IMPROVE DISCOVERABILITY

Information-rich site

Unique, relevant, and easily perused content

Links

Partner journal sites

Affiliated institutions, societies, and other organizations

Indexing and licensing

PubMed Central

Directory of Open Access Journals

EBSCO Electronic Journal Services (if willing)
