What is AfricaInfo?AfricaInfo is a pan-African open data initiative designed by and for the region to serve as a repository for select socio-economic indicators. The tool aims to align with global commitments - MDGs, Aid Effectiveness while strengthening the monitoring of the continents specific goals and priorities.
Along with the tangible output of the regional database, the Strategic Action Plan aligns AfricaInfo to support and compliment ongoing national initiatives and particularly in the enhancement of national statistical information systems and the recognition and utilization of data for decision-making. This includes focused and sustained capacity building for member states and the harmonization of data throughout the continent.
AfricaInfo builds on the DevInfo initiative, a UN tool monitoring MDGs and development. DevInfo is being used by 45 of 54 countries in the region. 4

38Way forwardPartners are ready to start implementation by: Agreeing upon list of indicatorsStarting to build the regional databaseProvide open access to all available national and sub-national dataInitiating the training program outlined in Strategic Action Plan
Ways forward:
To move ahead with the implementation of the 5 year strategic plan for AfricaInfo, immediate resource mobilization is required.
This will be followed by initial steps to agree upon the structure and content of the database (including indicator selection) and the compilation of national data. The strategic plan outlines an approach which emphasizes open access to development data, building towards the compilation of key indicators at national and sub-national levels. 39Way forward (continued)Resource mobilization based on existing ministerial endorsement of AfricaInfo in March 2011 Five-year strategic action plan - 2011-2015 calls for $10 million
