Africa – on the threshold of its urban age

Africa is in a historic period of demographic change and an unprecedented urbanization. In the early 1990s two-third of all Africans lived in rural areas. Around 2030 half of its total population will live in cities.

New spatial urban configurations: • The City Region;• Mega Urban Regions;• Urban Development Corridor;• Informal hyper growth: mega-cities equal mega-slums?

The East Africa Region – The least-urbanized region of Africa

... will double its 2007 urban population around 2025 – in merely 17 years.

This will generate social, economic and spatial issues that need to be urgently addressed:

• Housing• Services • Jobs and Livelihoods

for a spiralling number of poorurban dwellers.

Urban Ethiopia – in Ethiopia, urbanization will be inevitable and irreversible

• The current urban population is around 17% of 80 million;

• The recent urban growth rates haven been spectacular; around 5 % p.a. 30% urban population in 2020.

• “Urban primacy” – Addis Ababa is with 4 million (2010) ten times larger than the 2nd largest city – Dire Dawa with 400.000 inhabit.

• Of the 927 cities/towns are only 10 with more than 100.000 inhabit.

• Following to UN HABITAT more than 80% of the urban population do not have access to adequate housing and lack access to safe water and sanitation.

Ethiopia’s Demographic Development

Ethiopia’s population counts:1950: 18,434,0002009: 82,825,000 (4.5 x of 1950)2025: 119,822,0002050: 173,811,000Source: (UN/DESA), Statistics Division

Ethiopia‘s population tripledin the last 40 years; and is on track to double within another 30 years

• Where will the additional 80 million people live?• Will the urban areas have the capacity to integrate these additional 80 million people in the coming 30 years?

20 new cities with the size equivalent to the present Addis Ababa?

...this can only be the future for a small segment

Africa and Ethiopia have to invent their own models – starting with the reinventionof a sustainable, locally basedmode of construction.
