Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy

A deep-rooted consideration for the natural world infuses each and every Abercrombie & Kent journey.

A&K believes passionately that travel should both respect the natural environment and benefit the indigenous peoples whose lands we visit. For over 30 years, A&K has been intimately involved in the support of these communities, their environments and their ecosystems.

Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy, guided by Abercrombie & Kent Vice Chairman Jorie Butler Kent, facilitates our commitment to socially and ecologically responsible travel worldwide, as well as helping our guests to become actively involved in these efforts. Every Abercrombie & Kent office plays an important hands-on role in its community, proudly sponsoring projects directly benefiting the local people and environment.

For example, in Kenya guests at Sanctuary Olonana are invited to plant an indigenous tree to aid in reforestation of the Masai Mara. In Tanzania The Serengeti Cheetah Project at Sanctuary Kusini is helping ensure the sustainability of this precious species by engaging guests in a ‘cheetah watch’ and photographic evidence of key sightings during game drives.

In Zambia, villagers at Nakatindi are cultivating a vegetable garden which generates an income from its produce and supplies local lodges.

AKP and Rhino Conservation Botswana in partnership with the Botswana Defence Force and the Department of Wildlife have facilitated the translocation of up to 20 rhino into Botswana’s Moremi Reserve.

In Jordan, A&K works with Madrasati (My School) and offers support to rehabilitate Balquees School in Amman improving safety and the learning environment, and providing field trips to local sites.

A&K in Morocco, supports Al Karam, a home in Marrakech that houses street children in emergency situations and provides activities for children living on the street.

Programmes marked with a represent opportunities for travellers to be personally involved in these projects.

Southern AfricaA vast and diverse continent, Africa is rich in natural treasures. from north to south it invites adventure, breathtaking sights and unimaginable experiences.

Travelling to the southernmost regions you’ll be able to experience unique wildlife, awe-inspiring landscapes and colourful cultural attractions quite different to other parts of the continent.

South Africa is a world in one country where private game reserves deliver unmatched wildlife sightings and uber-luxurious lodgings. Namibia’s deserts are home to extraordinary animals and rugged landscapes while Botswana is famous for the Okavango Delta where a mokoro excursion along the waterways will be remembered forever. Emerging from recent economic woes, Zimbabwe has upped the ante and once again captures the safari-goer’s imagination with huge tracts of wilderness and intimate safari camps. Neighbouring Zambia is wild Africa at its best, renowned for the up-close experience of its walking safaris. for something entirely different Madagascar has people, creatures and landscapes that you’ll see nowhere else on the planet and for spectacular beaches and sparkling seas an island getaway on Mauritius is just the ticket.

when to Go

South Africa is an exceptional destination year round. Namibia also offers perennial attractions with the dry months of July and October peak times for wildlife. Botswana is best visited between May and October, whilst Zambian wildlife is best viewed between June and November. Madagascar is best between June and November and Mauritius April through November.

Guests at Sanctuary Baines’ and Sanctuary Stanley’s Camps have the unique opportunity of meeting Jabu, Thembi and Morula and interacting with them during a leisurely half day bush experience - truly unforgettable.

East AfricaThe never-ending golden plains of the savannah dotted with acacia trees and huge herds of game are quintessential East Africa. The extraordinary phenomenon of the great Migration plays out across the Serengeti and Masai Mara, two of Africa’s most iconic wilderness areas, but there are other fascinating wildlife spectacles in the region including populations of the endangered mountain gorilla in rwanda and uganda, chimps in Tanzania, the gelada baboon in Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains and desert adapted species in Kenya’s north.

There’s also more than just the wildlife on display here. A rich cultural heritage exists amongst the resident tribes of East Africa and there are opportunities aplenty to visit local villages and schools and community projects. There are also thousands of kilometres of coastline with beautiful beaches and appealing accommodation choices for a relaxing way to end a safari.

when to Go

Kenya and Tanzania have outstanding game viewing and spectacular scenery year round, the region’s greatest attraction being the annual wildebeest migration between the Serengeti (December - March and June

- September) and the Masai Mara (June – September). Travel is best in uganda and rwanda between June and September. Ethiopia’s weather varies from north to south. The best time to visit Northern and Central Ethiopia is October to April with rains June to October. in Southern Ethiopia the main rains occur March to May with short rains in November.

On horseback, riders become part of the landscape - just another animal in the bush - which means getting closer to the wildlife and even better photographic opportunities. Much of the plains action occurs at first light and there is no better way to experience this than from the basket of a hot air balloon. Rise before dawn, rug up and meet your pilot, crew and brightly coloured balloon somewhere on the savannah. Burners are lit, the craft inflated and as the sun’s first rays light the sky guests clamber in. Gently the balloon rises and the adventure begins. Float peacefully over the golden plains, rivers and forests of the Masai Mara and see herds of game and even predators after the hunt. After the hour long flight an ‘Out of Africa’ style bush breakfast is served.
