HISTORYDating from 4500 years ago, ancient Egypt is the oldest and most dynamic of all early kingdoms known to have flourished on the continent of Africa. Egypt’s early strength was the Nile River, the longest river in the whole world. It runs from two little rivers–the White Nile, which runs from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile in the Nubian Mountains.

TRADE KINGDOMS
Trade routes developed across Africa in several places. Early African people lived in small family groups. Parents, children and grandparents formed clans with other families. Larger clans became tribes.

ChristianityMain article: Christianity in
Africa Although Christianity
existed far before the rule
of King Ezana the Great of
the Kingdom of Axum, the
religion took a strong foot
hold when it was declared
a state religion in 330 AD.

CULTUREThe music, art, literature, and
cultural practices of Africa have
provoked interest and respect
throughout the world. The old
belief that Africa is somehow
childlike in its cultural
development has been
denounced as people become
more familiar with the rich
traditions of the continent.
![Page 22: AFRICA](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062501/56816674550346895dda0db7/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
The material and inherent value
of African art steadily increases
in the world market. The music
and literature of these peoples
have found their way into
houses and classrooms around
the globe. We are beginning to
learn through the works of
scholars, film makers, and
writers that Africans can teach
us much more than we can
show them.
