What is aphasia?Aphasia is a disorder that
results from damage to
portions of the brain thatare responsible for lan-
guage. It impairs the indi-
viduals expression and un-
derstanding of language,
both verbal and written.Aphasia is typically
seen suddenly, often as aresult of a stroke or head
injury. It can also come
gradually as seen in pa-
tients suffering with abrain tumor or a degenera-
tive disease.
A person with aphasia may:
Speak in short or in-
complete sentences
Speak or write in sen-tences that dont make
sense
Speak unrecognizable
words
Not comprehend other
peoples conversation
Although aphasia iscommonly seen in the mid-
dle-aged or older popula-
tion, children are not im-
mune to this disorder. Ac-cording to the National
Aphasia Association, ap-proximately 80,000 indi-
viduals acquire aphasia
each year from stroke, and about 1 million people
in the United States are
suffering from this disor-
der.
Some people recoverfrom aphasia without
treatment, but most re-quire language therapy for
assistance.
