1 Dear AFP Legacy, Firstly, I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to participate in the Outward-Bound Women of Courage (WOC) program Oct 2018. It was an amazing experience which I could not have done without your support. The WOC was a woman only seven-day program with a motto of challenge by choice, you could participate as much or as little as you were capable of. Alongside the instructor was a psychologist who participated in all activities as well. The program and activities were very well organised yet, flexible to the conditions like weather and group participation and skill set. They would go to great lengths to ensure individual needs were met. They even had another staff member drive out to where we were camped to pick me up and take me to an area with phone reception to call my son for his birthday and kids for the anniversary of Chriss death. I found that each activity built on the last, developing trust and teamwork for us to tackle the next challenge. They may have been physical or reflective exercises. Personally, it had been a very long time since I had to focus on myself, not my many other roles as mum, wife etc. It gave me the chance to explore what my skills were and what I need to develop. The psychologist was not there to analyse but support and help the participants develop tools for the future. One basic but important example for me was asking for help instead of fighting through on my own. I have always been able to climb a high tree, but the high rope course with nothing but air to grab was a challenge. The encouragement and support and judgement from the staff and the women who all have their own stories was amazing; you just needed to ask. We hiked, did high ropes and swings, did above ground caving, abseiling, and much more. The food was fantastic, the equipment was great. It was a lot of fun. I got so much more out of it than I thought I would and a program I would recommend highly. Dear AFP Legacy,

Firstly, I would like to

thank you for giving

me the opportunity to

participate in the

Outward-Bound

Women of Courage

(WOC) program Oct 2018. It was an amazing experience which I could not

have done without your support.

The WOC was a woman only seven-day program with a motto of challenge

by choice, you could participate as much or as little as you were capable of.

Alongside the instructor was a psychologist who participated in all activities

as well.

The program and activities were very well organised yet, flexible to the

conditions like weather and group participation and skill set. They would go

to great lengths to ensure individual needs were met. They even had

another staff member drive out to where we were camped to pick me up

and take me to an area with phone reception to call my son for his birthday

and kids for the anniversary of Chris’s death.

I found that each activity built on the last, developing trust and teamwork

for us to tackle the next challenge. They may have been physical or

reflective exercises.

Personally, it had been a very long time since I had to focus on myself, not

my many other roles as mum, wife etc. It gave me the chance to explore

what my skills were and what I need to develop.

The psychologist was not there to analyse but support and help the

participants develop tools for the future. One basic but important example

for me was asking for help instead of fighting through on my own. I have

always been able to climb a high tree, but the high rope course with nothing

but air to grab was a challenge. The encouragement and support and

judgement from the staff and the women who all have their own stories was

amazing; you just needed to ask.

We hiked, did high ropes and swings, did above ground caving, abseiling,

and much more. The food was fantastic, the equipment was great. It was a

lot of fun. I got so much more out of it than I thought I would and a

program I would recommend highly.

Thanks again, Tracy Bird

2018 AFP Legacy Ball Wrap - Thank you to all who made our Ball a success!

Meet AFP Legacy Volunteer, Mr Gordon McAlpine ESM

What do you enjoy most about volunteering for AFP Legacy?

Working with a great bunch of Volunteers in the Volunteers In Po-licing Program (VIP) to help the AFP members families who are going through tough times.

How long have you been an AFP VIP and how did you first become involved?

I joined the VIP Program in September 2002. First involvement was with the Olympic Volunteers In Policing (OVIP) for the 2000 Olympics. I am also a member of ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) and AFP requested ACTSES assistance for security duties at the Olympic Soccer matches held at Canberra Stadium. Subsequently I missed out on the first VIP intake in 2001 but was accepted for the second intake in 2002. After the training and security checks my course joined the VIP program in September 2002.

What is the most memorable AFP Legacy event that you have volunteered at and why?

There have been many events, it is hard to single one out. The list ranges from the opening of the National Police Memorial in Kings Park to assisting the AFP Ceremonial Team by helping AFP Families at funerals and assisting at Fundraising BBQs to help AFP families with the costs associated when their family members are very ill. The feeling of helping the families is very satisfying.

What did you do for work prior to becoming a volunteer with the AFP?

I joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in April 1970 and trained as an Avionics Technician and worked on a wide range of the Aircraft of the RAAF. I had postings all over Australia and overseas and reached the rank of Warrant Officer. I retired in August 1999 after 30 years of service.

Why do you volunteer to support our AFP Legacy Families in need?

I can use the skills I have to ease the burden the families in need have to face and I hope, make the experience they are going through just a little bit easier for them.

On behalf of our AFP families, thank you Gordon! We are very lucky to have you!

Thank you to all our wonderful Volunteers!

The 2018 AFP Legacy Ball was attended by 320 supporters. Our silent auctions, Kenny Wall and raffles were a huge hit, raising much needed funds for our AFP families in need. We wish to express our sincere thanks to all who supported and donated to the event. Huge thanks to our two Gold Sponsors, Police Bank and Sutton Road Training Centre; the AFP design team, guest speakers and our amazing volunteers. It would not have been the night it was without you all. For more photos please visit our AFP Legacy Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/AFPLegacy/

2018 Wall to Wall ceremonies

Known as the “Ride for the Fallen”, the ride is a special trib-ute that honours the service and sacrifices of the many law enforcement officers killed in the service. AFP Legacy Legatee, Chris O’Donohue is pictured handing the Baton over to ACT Chief Police Officer, Justine Saunders. The Batons have been engraved with each jurisdiction’s Police Service Logo alongside the Wall to Wall Ride Logo and have a hollow centre allowing for the names of any fallen members to be inserted.
