Building A Winner A Message From Carr Lane President Alan Frost

O ne evening recently, I was making a short drive and tuned the radio in an attempt to hear the St Louis University men’s basketball game. The Billikens, as they are called, are in the midst of a very successful season, currently undefeated in the A‐10, and highly ranked nationally.  The starting lineup consists of five seniors, who are each in their fourth year in the program.

Having been played on the east coast, the game was over.  The coach was being interviewed by the play‐by‐play announcer.  The announcer asked about the play of two of the starters.  While acknowledging the play of those players, the coach, Jim Crews, said he wanted to talk about two other players.      He proceeded to compliment the work of two bench players, neither of whom got into the game.  He spoke of how their work in practice was crucial in the play of the starters, as they worked to prepare the starters for that game.      At the time I thought how positive it would be for those two who never got into the game to learn what the coach had said about them.  Later, I realized the true genius of the coach’s comments.  As I noted, the starters are all seniors,

and will be graduating this May.  Jim Crews will be the coach next year, while all of his starters have moved on.  He knows this year’s reserves will be strong candidates for starting roles next year, and he is planning ahead.  By praising and recognizing their contributions in this very successful season, he is making his current team stronger, and building for next season.      Everyone who is a manager can learn much from this example.  Not every worker is our best now.  However, our lineup changes, just as it does on a sports team.  While a coach knows when a player will graduate, they never know when one might be injured.  As managers, we never know when we will have a change in our team.  We need to build up the bench, or second team, so we have capable

replacements ready to step up when there is a need.

Jim Crews has built a winner at St Louis University by developing his younger, less experienced players so they will be ready when needed.  We can build a winner in the same way, by developing those who are not yet stars to become the stars of tomorrow.

“ As managers, we never know when we will have a change in our team.”

The Need For Speed — cover story continued

Mechanical Engineering Department explained, “The pins will make our lives much easier. Our aero lead is very happy to have them so we can easily assemble/disassemble the wings on our cars for transportation to and from the track.”    The University’s formula sports car group allows many learning opportunities as a member of the team: gaining experience in design, manufacturing, testing, research, fundraising, management, and more. For more than 30 years, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has held an annual competition known as Formula SAE. The goal is to design and build a formula‐style racing car and compete against similar cars from all over the world. This is the 25th year that the University of Washington will compete.

What Happened HERE!? (You tell US!)

Yes, that’s an outline of a body. The picture was snapped recently in the Purchasing Department of Carr Lane Manufacturing headquarters in St. Louis. WE know what was going on. But what do YOU think happened here? Write us at [email protected]. The best answer will win a Carr Lane coffee mug! (NOTE: This was all in good fun. No one was injured in the making or taking of this photograph!)

C arr Lane Manufacturing launched its 2014 Co‐Op Program earlier this month. This marks the second year for this program that recognizes our top distributors with Co‐Op dollars that can be applied toward logoed merchandise or toward creditable items such as open houses.       New  this year are  several  items  including a Carr Lane coffee mug and black fleece vest.  In addition,  several

co‐branded  items are available  including the company’s signature green polo shirts, a new Hoist Ring Safety poster, and Carr Lane memo pads — each allows for placement of the distributor’s logo and contact information.

S teve Nielson reached out to Carr Lane Manufacturing recently to share a story of a ruler his dad gave to him as a small boy. “My dad gave this to me back in the mid 1960s. I used it in high school drafting class when we used to have to draw manually on the board. After high school, there were a few years in college I used it while I was taking architect classes. That didn’t pan out and I ended up at an automated machine building company, coincidentally using

many Carr Lane products. Currently, I’m a cost estimator for new equipment. I use the ruler as a straight edge, along with it being a conversation piece!”

New ERP Software At Carr Lane Mfg. System-wide Improvements Planned To Benefit Customer Experience

B y  the end of  the year, Carr Lane Manufacturing employees and customers will be benefitting from a new, more robust  software management  system,  following  the  implementa‐tion  of  new  ERP  software.  The  year‐plus‐long  process  has

involved employees from all departments with the goal of creating a more efficient, more adaptive and  responsive  resource management system.             Among other improvements that the new ERP system will bring to Carr  Lane  Manufacturing  is  the  ability  to  validate  addresses  and  shipping  account  numbers,  something  the  current  system  is  not  capable of. The new system also will allow the placement of inventory on reserve three weeks prior to the ship date (the current system can only  reserve  12  hours  in  advance).  Internally,  the  new  software will provide better shop floor visibility of jobs, work in progress (WIP) and scheduling.   Watch the next  issue of the Courier for an update on this important project.
