  • Dr. Mike Davenport oversees both the women's and men's rowing programs and was appointed Washington's sixth

women's rowing head coach in the summer of 1990. After

several years of having the top-ranked team and/or boat in the

Mid-Atlantic region, Davenport guided the Shorewomen's

varsity eight to the program's first-ever appearances in the

NCAA Division III Championships in 2008. He was also named

the Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year that same season.

The Shorewomen returned to the NCAA Division III Championships the following year

as the first varsity eight was again selected as an at-large boat. The Shorewomen

captured the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championship in 2009 and

    again in 2011.

Prior to arriving at Washington, Davenport was head coach at the University of Albany.

Mike graduated from FIT in 1978, where he won several Dad Vail medals. After

graduation, he was an assistant coach and was instrumental in FIT winning several

national titles as well as the Dad Vail overall point trophy.

Davenport's coaching experience has extended well beyond the collegiate experience

realm and onto the National Rowing Team. For two years, he was an assistant coach

to the US Pre-Elite Heavyweight team. He spent the summer of 1991 in Cuba as a

member of the Pan American team and was a member of the 1992-95 US World

Championship teams. Most recently, Davenport was a member of the 1996 Olympic

    Team in Atlanta, GA.

A collegiate coach for 28 years, Davenport also serves as Washington's compliance

coordinator and as an adjunct professor. Apart from his duties at the college, he wear

several other hats. He is one of the founders of SportWork; has authored several

books (Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging, Excel with the NCAA Bylaws, and Acid Reflux

in Infants and Children); has spoken regularly at coaching conferences, workshops,

and conventions; and is a primary educational consultant for USRowing.

Davenport also has several web sites and blogs currently in production, including

    ReThink Coaching, RowCollege, and MaxRigging.

    • John grew up near Annapolis, Maryland.

    • After eighth grade his family moved to Illinois. It was there that

he was recruited by the track coach for pole vaulting. After his

junior year his family was relocated back to the east coast. The

Bornhoefts settled near Centreville and John started his senior

year at QACHS, where he met his future and current wife-

    Catherine Kratz.

    • Graduate of QACHS 1977

    • Won States for Pole Vaulting

    • John went on to college at Towson State University where he

pole vaulted and achieved gold medals at regional and

conference meets and the Georgia Relays his senior year. He

also broke the indoor school record at TSU.

    • Graduate of Towson University 1981

    • Graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business

    • Married Cathy Kratz (high school sweetheart!) in 1982.

    • They have been married 30 years. Have a 25 year old son John

E and 24 year old daughter Sarah.

    • John has his own Yacht Brokerage”Nautilus Yacht Sales” in

Georgetown, Maryland on the Sassafras river.

    • 25 years after John broke the QACHS record John volunteered

to help coach Nesbitt with his pole vaulting team. That year, one

talented athlete named (Davies) broke Johns long stand record.

  • I moved to Maryland from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Upon

registering for school, I entered the 9th grade at Queen Anne’s County High School.

This is where I received my high school education and began to enjoy sports. During

my time at Queen Anne’s I became interested in indoor and outdoor track. The entire

time of my enrollment at Queen Anne’s I excelled in the indoor and outdoor track. I ran

the 300 meter hurdles and 110 high hurdles, participated in the high jump, long jump,

triple jump, and 400 meter relay.

Also, during my time at QACHS I played football. I played the positions of running back

and wide receiver. For defense I was the safety and outside line-backer.

Last but not least, in the high school sport world I participated in wrestling. I wrestled in

the weight class of 138-160. I excelled there too. BUT, of all the sports that I

participated in I had a passion for track. Being able to be the best at it was essential for

me. I achieved several awards and ribbons during my time and I accomplished a lot.

By the time I hit 11th grade, I made MASTER OF SPORTS. I also managed to make

honor roll during my years at QA. I am grateful to my coach for all of the training and

coaching that he gave to me during my high school years.

    My Accomplishments

Community involvement-Fatherhood Group in Denton, Maryland

Mentored through the Department of Juvenile Services in Easton, Maryland

Assisting to coach Track & Field for North Caroline High School

A member of True Foundation Holiness Church where I am currently a Trustee for the

    church

    Adult Education

I attended Lincoln Technical Institute after high school in order to become a successful

Auto Mechanic. From here I attended Tiffin University to acquire my degree in

    Business.

    Employment

I am currently employed at Preston Ford Auto Plex where I have been employed for the

past year and I own my own business that I still maintain in my spare time which is

called “GOD’S WORK”. I have been maintaining the business for several years and

    hope to enlarge it someday.

    Family

I have 3 wonderful children, Ashley Felton-22, Christopher Felton III (CJ)-14, Nia Felton-

  • This year, Coach Heath Gilbert enters his 14th year of teaching strength

training and health along with coaching football. Coach Gilbert played

football and lacrosse for Queen Anne’s County High School in Centerville,

MD. Coach Gilbert was recently named to the Queen Anne's County High

School hall of fame. He will be inducted in the 2012 class.

He then continued his education and football career at Shepherd College,

now Shepherd University, in Shepherdstown, West Virginia where he started

at linebacker for four years and was a two year team captain. He saw

success at Shepherd both individually and as a team. Gilbert finished his

career with 37 starts and 5th all-time in solo tackles. As a team Shepherd

won two conference titles and was ranked 11th in the nation his senior year.

While at Shepherd, Coach Gilbert played all five years for Jeff Casteel, now

the Defensive Coordinator at Arizona University, and Monte Cater, the all-

time winningest coach in Shepherd University and WVICA history. Coach

Gilbert attributes much of his knowledge and philosophy of the game to both

of these successful men. Once becoming a High School coach he feels

fortunate to have learned from two excellent mentors, Mark McHale, whose

last two stops were at Marshall University & Florida State University, and

Kevin Anderson, now Shenandoah University Head Baseball Coach and

former NCAA D-1 Baseball Coach of the Year. Coach Gilbert has taught and

coached, ten as head coach, in Warren County Public Schools for his entire

    career.

He and his wife Tara, a 1995 graduate of Warren County High School, were

married in 2001. The couple has a seven year old girl, named Peyton and

a four year old boy named Andrew and they reside in Warren County.

My athletic career started when I entered GAR High School in Wilkes -Barre, Pennsylvania in

the fall of 1961 when I was in the seventh grade. I became a manager for the football team and

stayed in that position until the end of 8th grade. In the fall of 1963, my freshman year in high

school, I tried out for the freshman football team and was selected to play. Freshman were not

allowed to compete on the varsity level at that time.

The following year I was selected to play on the varsity team and did so for the next three

years. In my tenure on the varsity team I played Middle Guard on defense, predecessor to the

modern Nose tackle, and offensive tackle. I earned a Varsity letter in football in my senior year.

In my senior year I was selected by the coaches of the Wyoming Valley Conference to

participate in the UNICO East - West All Star Game. The game raised money for the charities in

Wyoming Valley by putting the best players from the east side of the river against those from

    the west side.

While I was in high school I also tried out for baseball. Again as a freshman you could not play

varsity but in my tenth grade year I made the varsity team pitching and playing third base. I

lettered in baseball my senior year.

In the fall of 1967 I entered Mansfield State College in Mansfield, Pennsylvania. I was recruited

to play by Rod Kelchner, head coach at the time. I played defensive end on the freshman team.

Again at the time Freshman were not allowed to play at the varsity level. The following year I

returned and tried out making the varsity team and what was known then as the travelling team

since only forty players were allowed to travel. I played offensive tackle. The following year I

was shifted to center when the starting center was injured and in my senior year was moved

back to tackle lettering in football.

In 1971 I was employed by Queen Anne's County and began coaching football with a previous

inductee, Chet Knight, and another person being inducted in this class Thad Kalmanowicz. In

those years I held the position of what would be known today as defensive coordinator, and

head line coach. One of the defenses created at that time was what we called a three five three,

or 35. We used a nose guard and two defensive ends with five line backers. The NFL copied

our idea when they went to a nose tackle. (just kidding, but we ran it first). I was also the head

JV coach the last year I coached football. In the following years I coached JV baseball with

Jody Hyde and JV field hockey with Martha Anthony. I enjoyed those sports especially the field

hockey. I took over the Queen Anne's County Softball Program when Pat Keeney left the

position. In the beginning we played in the Anne Arundel 4A league. Eventually we transferred

to the Bay Side Conference, where we won the Bayside Championship in 1994. I was voted

coach of the year twice in the Bayside Conference.

Overall at QACHS our teams had a winning record and went to the state playoffs on several

occasions advancing to the region final one time. I ended my coaching career at QACHS and

transferred to KIHS. I also coached softball there for four years. My coaching career in the

community began in the Centreville Little League. I coached a "minor league" team and placed

several players from that team on the Major League Team the one that travelled and competed

    with other area little leagues.

I was also involved in the community with the Centreville Softball Team. We eventually

competed for the league title in our first year as a team losing 1 - 0 to Goldie Garner. Several of

the players from those teams eventually played for me at the high school. I also started and

coached the Bay Country Moose Travelling Softball Team. This was a group of young ladies

that travelled from state to state in the summer playing tournament softball, the next level of

competition. Seven of the people from this team were given scholarships to play in colleges in

all divisions. Several other players attended college and played however not on scholarship. It

was at the time quite an accomplishment for our little program to place so many young ladies in

colleges to play softball as well as continue their educations. Several of these girls coached in

    college at all levels.

On a personal note the first one was Cheryl Denny Shockley who was in the first class of

this Hall. Due to the need for pitching our program also established the first pitching clinics in

this area conducted by Paul Tewey who if I am not mistaken still runs clinics on the Eastern

Shore along with several others now. We also started the Bay Country Moose Invitational

showcasing some of the finest women's fastpitch teams on the East Coast. In addition to

coaching in the community I also played in the Men's Recreational League in Queen Anne's

County playing for one team and coaching three others. I was also a member of the Centreville

Lions, The Bay Country Moose and The Knights of Columbus.

Presently I am a retired teacher. I worked in the Queen Anne's County System for 40 years,

retiring in June 2010. Presently I am married to Cecelia English Sedorovich. We live in the

    Centreville area

We have a daughter Ashley Sedorovich Perry who resides with her husband Jeff in Akron. I

would consider it an honor to have my daughter Ashley Sedorovich Perry present me at the

ceremony on October 26. If you need contact information please let me know or I can contact

    her.

I wondered if this day was ever going to come. I thought

perhaps Queen Anne’s County did not have records of my

accomplishments, or maybe the Committee doesn’t know

me or about me. I am the first Individual State Champion

for Queen Anne’s County High School (and did it for track).

I wondered if I was ever going to make it into Queen

Anne’s county High School’s Hall of Fame.

When the call finally came from Mrs. Betty, it sounded so

beautiful to my ears. I finally made it!

Thank you God for allowing me to be here to receive the

call, thanks to everyone who voted, selected or mentioned
