WFO News to Know

Editor’s Note: The WFO established the Committee on National and

Regional Boards in 2005 to provide structure to efforts to assist with

implementation of Board certification opportunities for orthodontists

worldwide. Activities got underway to bring support to national

board certifying organizations. In addition, the committee organized

meetings and symposia at the 7th and 8th International Orthodontic

Congresses in Sydney and London, respectively, and as part of the

virtual 9th IOC last October.

In 2017, discussions began with the 19 orthodontic specialty boards

that volunteered to participate in the committee’s work, regarding

a proposed Society of Orthodontic Specialty Certifying Boards.

The proposed entity was to be administered by the WFO.

Following approval from the WFO Executive Committee and

agreement from the organizations participating in the Committee

on National and Regional Boards, the Society of Orthodontic

Specialty Certifying Boards was established last year.

Dr. Valmy Pangrazio-Kulbersh, a new WFO

Executive Committee member representing

North America and the current president of the

American Board of Orthodontics, became the chair

of the SOSCB. Joining Dr. Kulbersh in leading

the SOSCB are Dr. Nikhilesh Vaid, president of

the WFO; Dr. Ricardo Cruz, Executive Committee

member representing Central and South America;

and Dr. Eric Liou, Executive Committee member representing Central

and East Asia. The first SOSCB meeting took place in January 2021,

with 19 regional and national organizations represented.

Below, Dr. Kulbersh provides an overview of the SOSCB’s strategic vision, goals and upcoming tasks.

Overview of the SOSCB

Orthodontists around the world face the same challenges, which include but are not limited to:

a. Disparities in orthodontic education

b. Disparities in the delivery of orthodontic care within the dental profession

c. Lack of evidence-based treatment modalities

d. Impact of technological advancements on the delivery of care

e. Socio-economic factors associated with the delivery of treatment

These challenges are affecting the quality of orthodontic care worldwide. The mission of WFO is to advance the art and science of orthodontics throughout the world. To do so, the WFO has an important advisory role in the evaluation of the curriculum of orthodontic programs in countries affiliated with the WFO.

Excellence in orthodontic education based on evidence-based curricula, would eventually result in higher standards of delivery of orthodontic care worldwide. Once this is accomplished, the formation of a uniform certification process could be instituted in all countries associated with the WFO. The patients we serve will ultimately be the beneficiaries of the work of the WFO.

The purpose of the Society of Orthodontic Specialty Certifying Board is to improve the quality of orthodontic treatment throughout the world, by improving the knowledge and skills of WFO-member orthodontists by encouraging them to aspire and challenge themselves to achieve orthodontic specialty board certification in their respective countries.

Plans for Achievement of the SOSCB Goals

To achieve its purpose, the SOSCB has established goals. During its first official meeting on January 31, 2021, the members of the SOSCB deliberated on ways to best accomplish the mission and goals of the Society, as outlined below.

GOAL 1

Invite and encourage established national orthodontic specialty

boards to become members of the SOSCB.

It was decided that in order of importance, Goal 1 was to be addressed first by the committee. The steps proposed to accomplish this goal are:

First

u Survey the orthodontic boards worldwide to identify their special needs. Identify commonalities and establish a mechanism by which the SOSCB could better serve those interested in board certification.

Second

u Create guidelines for the orthodontic certification examination process for all affiliated societies/ associations that are members of the WFO. The total number of affiliated orthodontic boards of the WFO is currently 10% of the total number of orthodontic certifying boards worldwide. The SOSCB hopes that with its help, this number will grow to include most, if not all, WFO recognized orthodontic society boards.

Third

a. Develop guidelines for standards of care to protect our patients; and

b. Establish regular communication with WFO SOSCB participating board members.

The SOSCB realizes the existence of multiple regional obstacles that need to be taken into consideration. The tasks mentioned may be considered aspirational but, without aspiration there is no resolution.

ORGANIZATIONS AND REPRESENTATIVES TO THE SOSCB

WFO News to Know

Future tasks of the SOSCB will be:

GOAL 2

Encourage, and assist if requested, in the formation of a new national

orthodontic specialty board in countries that do not already have a

national board certification organization.

The considerations to accomplish this goal are:

a. Monitor changes related to issues of orthodontic education, including, but not limited to training, program accreditation, financing etc.

b. Collaborate with and make recommendations to the WFO Special Committee of Educators Forum and Digital Educational Platforms, related to fostering improvements in orthodontic education and research.

c. Encourage the formation of regional boards like the European Board of Orthodontists for Europe, utilizing a virtual platform for administration of exams.

GOAL 3

Provide a forum for collaboration and the exchange of ideas between

and among member board organizations for the purpose of improving

the quality of orthodontic education and treatment.

This goal would be partially accomplished through the development of guidelines for standards of care.

GOAL 4

Provide a forum for collaboration and the exchange of ideas between

and among member board organizations for the purpose of improving

their board certification process.

A step toward this goal would be to help national organizations in the development of national virtual exams, accessible to the orthodontists who want to pursue board certification.

GOAL 5

Provide a forum for orthodontic specialty board representatives

to share, discuss and learn about other issues of common interest.

A step toward this goal would be for the SOSCB, in conjunction with WFO events, to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between educators and others with interests and/or expertise in education.

GOAL 6

Provide a voice for national orthodontic specialty boards in the

WFO by serving as an advisory committee to the WFO Executive

Committee. Steps toward this goal would be:

a. Develop standardized board certifying examination guidelines to serve as a basis for certification exams for participating and newly formed boards.

b. Establish/suggest guidelines for orthodontic didactic and clinical education, which will facilitate consistency in orthodontic specialty training, globally.

Society of Orthodontic Specialty Certifying Boards… [ 3 ]

In 2006, the Executive Committee of the WFO accepted the president’s proposal for the establishment of a task force for the development of Guidelines for Post Graduate Orthodontic Education. These guidelines were published in the World Journal

of Orthodontics (2009; 10:153-166).

The aim of the SOSCB is to determine how well these guidelines are followed and to encourage their adherence for standardization of orthodontic education among educational institutions requesting assistance from the WFO/SOSCB.

Upcoming Communication: Boards Survey

The Society of Orthodontic Specialty Certifying Boards will be sending a survey to all national/regional orthodontic certifying boards to determine how the SOSCB could better serve them.

The WFO executive committee and the members of the SOSCB want to thank all representatives of the WFO / SOSCB for their contributions in preserving the orthodontic specialty delivery of care by qualified specialists that have demonstrated commitment to excellence in orthodontics. Together, we can achieve this goal through education, certification and professional collaboration. t

The SOSCB aims to help national and regional organization develop processes that will be well-received by orthodontist members, and also succeed in validating the knowledge and skills of orthodontists seeking to be certified. Approaches used must also fit the situation in each country, including variations such as legal structures and other factors.

Below are three examples of certification processes used by current SOSC affiliate organizations:

Thai Board of Orthodontics

Founded: 1997

Supervision: Thai Dental Council, Ministry of Public Health

Exams: Written and oral

Legal framework: According to Thai law, only those who pass both board examinations can call themselves orthodontists.

Eligibility: Certification candidates must have finished their postgraduate orthodontic studies with an accredited postgraduate orthodontic program accredited by the Thai Dental Council, which currently accredits seven programs in the country. After completing the second of three years of postgraduate study, students may take the written portion of the exam and keep the results for five years.

Oral exam requirements: Each candidate must submit 8 complete treatment cases of different malocclusions as a requirement to apply for the Oral Examination. They can submit cases they treated during their training. The referees choose 1 out of the 8 cases submitted for the oral examination.

Additional requirement for certification: To be certified by the Thai Board of Orthodontics, in addition to passing both written and oral board examinations the candidate must complete a research project that is accepted as a manuscript or published in a national or international journal.

Frequency of examinations: Thai Board of Orthodontics conducts Board Examinations once a year, both written and oral.

Certified orthodontists: Thailand now has 407 certified Thai Board of Orthodontics orthodontists.

Information submitted by: Dr. Somchai Satravaha

Italian Board of Orthodontics (IBO)

Founded: 1998

Supervision: Italian Society of Orthodontics (SID0)

Exams: Case submissions followed by an Examining Commission interview

Legal framework: The Italian Board of Orthodontics has the unique purpose of issuing the CERTIFICATION OF EXCELLENCE IN ORTHODONTICS to certify the quality of the clinical results achieved in professional orthodontic practice. This certification has no legal value.

Eligibility: As graduates in dentistry have the legal right to practice orthodontic treatment in Italy, according to current Italian legislation, all dentists who are enrolled in the Professional Register for at least 5 years can apply for the examination. Therefore, to pursue certification, it is not mandatory to be a specialist in orthodontics.

Oral exam requirements: The documentation related to the clinical treatment of 8 treated cases with specific characteristics (i.e. Interceptive treatment; Malocclusion in Adults; Class I; Class II division 2; Class II hyperdivergent; Class II division 1; severe skeletal discrepancy; severe transversal discrepancy). A specific Commission (formed by the IBO Council and the Chairman of the Examining Commission) has the duty to verify the correspondence of the cases presented with the required characteristics, as well as the quality and completeness of the documents. The Candidates must also take and pass an interview with the Examining Commission.

IBO goals: The aim of the IBO is to establish and maintain the highest standard of excellence in orthodontics. For this purpose, the IBO clearly defines 3 objectives: 1) the objective assessment of orthodontic knowledge and clinical capacity of orthodontists through the “Certification of Excellence in Orthodontics” examination; 2) the re-evaluation of knowledge and clinical capacity during the professional career, and, through recertification; 3) promote cultural exchanges and cement friendship between IBO members through convivial meetings.

Re-certification requirements: The only obligation for all IBO Certified Members is the presentation, on the occasion of the IBO Model Display, of at least one case at least every two years. This rule does not apply to Certified Members who are over 60 years of age or over 15 years of service. There are no fees associated with IBO membership.

Frequency of examinations: The exam to obtain the Certification of Excellence is organized every two years during the congress of the Italian Society of Orthodontics (SIDO).

Certified orthodontists: Currently, there are 130 IBO members.

Specific requirements include a minimum program duration of 24 months with a minimum workload of 2,200 hours, of which no less than 1,300 hours will be dedicated to clinical practice.*

Exam requirements: At the second stage of the process, the candidate’s knowledge in the specialty is assessed in conjunction with clinical examination of a number of cases treated by the examined professional, that are judged by his or her peers. Applicants must take an evaluation test, with discussion of clinical cases presented by the examining table, in which they must make a diagnosis and design a treatment. The process includes dental models (upper and lower), photographs and X-rays.

Frequency of examination: Once a year

Certified orthodontists: Currently there are 269 SAO members.

Information submitted by: Dr. Lia Sokolowicz

* Additional academic requirements include: a) To have a suitable director and teaching staff with sufficient background in the matter. b) Have a suitable physical plant for the development of teaching and clinical activities. c) Have developing a program that in its content adequately covers the different aspects of theory and practice orthodontic

With everyone’s mind oriented in the same direction, together we can reach limitless horizons.

WFO News to Know

World Orthodontic Health Day, celebrated annually on May 15, is an excellent opportunity to spread the positive messages of orthodontic treatment and interact with members of the public of all ages who would like to know more.

Since WOHD began in 2017 many affiliate organizations, orthodontic departments at universities and hospitals, and individual WFO Fellows have developed unique observances that were locally visible and educational for the public. Celebrations in 2020 were typically limited to virtual observances. In some places, in-person events may again be possible this year.

Visual Elements Draw Attention to the Observance

New posters for World Orthodontic Health Day 2021 are now available, along with the archived collection of posters from past years. The many eye-catching designs and compelling photographs will help attract attention to promotions of WOHD celebrations.

u Access World Orthodontic Health Day Posters

u Access the World Orthodontic Health Day Logo (Available in five file types; scroll down the page to the DOWNLOAD tab for logos.)

In addition to the downloadable posters, the specially designed World Orthodontic Health Day logo is also available to organizations planning celebrations. The logo and posters may be used for all print and digital marketing of the day and to promote planned events with printed fliers, social media posts, etc.

Whether Virtual or In-Person, Celebrations Can Make an Impact

“Virtual observances of World Orthodontic Health Day may be the best approach in some countries or regions, depending on local reports of cases,” says Dr. Vaid, WFO president. “If local case levels are declining and vaccinations are underway, in-person events may be possible. Promotions should emphasize that all guidelines from local and regional public health authorities will be observed during events in order to make gatherings safe for participants.”

If needed, some of the options listed below could be adapted to online outreach via webcasts or Facebook streaming:

u Offer World Orthodontic Health Day events hosted by offices or orthodontic departments at their facilities, or by affiliate societies at public venues. Announce events in advance by distributing fliers and contacting local media outlets to help bring many visitors to events. Free consultations, screenings or other services may be offered at events if desired. Simply setting up a table outdoors can be an easy way to reach many people.

For organizations that wish to avoid distributing literature at tables, it may also be effective to set up laptops with videos of PowerPoint slides playing on an endless loop.

u Reach parents, teachers and students by asking to give presentations at schools. In addition to orthodontic treatment, it may be helpful to discuss general dental topics such as hygiene in school presentations.

u Take out advertisements in local or regional media outlets.

u Contact media outlets such as radio and television stations and ask to have an orthodontist representative be an on-air guest on an interview program.

u Write posts about World Orthodontic Health Day on social media platforms (which are also useful for promoting events). If there is information about orthodontic treatment on your organization’s website, link to the World Orthodontic Health Day information.

u Encourage current and former patients to celebrate as well. Host an in-office office event just for patients and serve treats that are permissible to eat while wearing braces. Offer information about orthodontics that they may take if they wish to, for family members or friends.

u Set up hashtag-based celebrations and invite patients and other local residents to share their smiles in observance of World Orthodontic Health Day. Encourage posting of selfies (with or without braces) or group photos.

u Host a smile/orthodontic awareness run. Use the proceeds for a donation to a related charity, such as a treatment center for children with craniofacial conditions.

u Invite students at local schools to enter an art competition or an essay contest. Contest themes might include smiles (for an art competition) or the importance of good oral hygiene (for an essay contest). Offer simple prizes that student families may enjoy, such as a meal at a restaurant. Host an event where any artwork submitted is displayed and prizes are presented to the contest winners.

Share Your Organization’s World Orthodontic Health Day Story

As soon as possible after celebrations conclude, WFO fellows and affiliate organizations are encouraged to email their event reports a nd photographs to [email protected]. Also, everyone is invited to discuss the day and share information and ideas with colleagues via the WFO Facebook page. t

T he WFO Executive Committee recently announced that the Gazette will now be published three times per year. In addition

to the traditional fall and spring issues, there will now be a summer issue as well.

“Beginning with the Spring 2021 issue, we plan to increase the periodicity of the Gazette and offer a higher percentage of news and topical coverage,” said Dr. Nikhilesh N. Vaid, president of the WFO. “When the WFO was established in 1995, there were no social media. However, with the electronic formatting and distribution of the Gazette and integrated social medial platforms of the WFO, it’s important that we change with the times. The extra issue will ensure that all news is recent and up-to-date.

“Issues of the Gazette will now be posted with links emailed to members during March, July and November,” added Dr. Vaid. “We encourage everyone to watch for each issue.”

In between issues of the Gazette, stay current on news and information by liking the WFO on Facebook. t
