Founded by the Gandhian followers and social activists Late R.V. Patankar, Late
Bapusaheb Shende & Late Savitribai Madan, „Satyaniketan‟ has become an
ideal centre of Rural & Tribal education in Ahmednagar district. „Satyaniketan‟ is
a Voluntary Social Service Organization working mainly in the tribal
concentration of Akole Tahasil in Ahmednagar District, since 1950. It is registered
under the Societies Registration Act 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950.
Actually the work then started, was in the nature of a government sponsored
non-official exercise in rural development, then known as the Sarvodaya
Scheme. On closure of this scheme by the government, in March 1966,
„Satyaniketan‟, duly registered as a public trust in 1956 and already actively
associating with the Sarvodaya scheme since inception, took over the
responsibility especially of the educational activities started under the aegis of
the scheme. Satyaniketan is affiliated to the „Bharatiya Adim Jati Sevak Sangh‟,
New Delhi and as such are running some schemes the finance for which is
routed through it. The Institution is concentrating on education of the tribals,
covering all age groups, as it is confident that it is the only sure and effective
way to bring about a wholesome change in their outlook. Simultaneously
„Satyaniketan‟ has been engaged in women welfare programes, child
development as well as enhancing local traditional skills. Satyaniketan is a
certified Khadi & Village Industries institution.
“Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the
mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.”

Short Stay Home („Stri Dilasa Kendra‟), Rajur
Tal- Akole, Dist- Ahmednagar.
Recognizing the need to protect women from exploitation and to support their survival and
rehabilitation, the scheme of Short Stay Home for women was introduced in 1969 as a social
defense mechanism.
Since 1993, the scheme of Short Stay Home is being run by „Satyaniketan‟ as a direct activity
certified by Bhartiya Adim Jati Sevak Sangh, New Delhi and monitored by Central Social
Welfare Board, New Delhi. The scheme is meant to provide temporary accommodation,
maintenance and rehabilitative services to women and girls rendered homeless due to family
discord, crime, violence, mental stress, social ostracism or are being forced into prostitution
and are in moral danger. The scheme through the provisions of shelter, food, clothing,
counseling, training, clinical and legal aid aims to rehabilitate such women in difficult
circumstances. Under this scheme, yearly grant is provided for the maintenance of maximum
30 residents for their residing period of 6 months to 3 years.
Satyaniketan‟s Short Stay Home has succeeded in rehabilitating about 1000 women and girls
so far. Most of them belong to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. During
their temporary stay they are given adequate support in terms of legal and monitory support.
They are also trained to become self-dependent, self-sufficient and self-defensive and also
empowered with dignity and self-respect. They are acquiring various skills and getting

Crèche Centres (Day Care Centres)
A crèche, daycare or nursery is a childcare centre where babies, toddlers, and young children
are cared for in a safe and stimulating surrounding. Crèche plays an important role in child‟s
development. It prepares the kid to face the challenges from the very beginning before they
join school. The idea of crèche is training and preparing a kid from trained teachers. Teachers
help the kids to know about different important things like discipline, eating habits, diet and
playing games. Crèche gives a child friendly environment to make the kid active all the time.
In order to pay special attention to the health and nutrition of the Rural & Tribal children,
„Satyaniketan‟ is running 34 Crèche Centres, covering the child population of around 920
children, of the age between 0-6 years. All these Crèche Centres are being monitored by
„Central Social Welfare Board, New Delhi‟, under „Rajiv Gandhi National Crèche Scheme‟.
These Crèche Centres are conducted by the trained lady staff (workers & helpers) who pay
full attention to inculcate good habits among the children. Facilities like Sleeping, Healthcare,
Supplementary Nutrition, Immunization, and Entertainment are being provided in these
Crèche Centres. A doctor pays regular visit to all Crèche Centres.
It is said that „Children are great imitators; give them something great to imitate‟. Really,
„Satyaniketan‟ has been doing the tremendous work in the process of Child Development,
especially in Rural & Tribal area.
