Background—Current Status of Gen- Eds:• Taken approximately 9 months
to get this far into development
• Our job: Polish up courses for development
Association of Food and Drug Officials
Pulse Check—FDA Concerns:
•Some Gen Eds more complete than others
•Variations in language, formatting, functionality, and 508 compliance
•Storyboards may need to be revised or recreated
For Example:
• Active vs. passive sentence structure
• Use of he/she where “they” or “they’re” may be preferred
• Back and forth use of “inspector” and “investigator” rather than “regulator”
• Inconsistencies regarding APA formatting/style
• Inconsistencies between sections such as title page, objectives, and knowledge checks
Association of Food and Drug Officials
FDA Concerns—A Little Deeper:
• Course content must be linked to competency statements
• Written for all jurisdictions (Federal, State, Local, Tribal)
• Review content across the content areas—Consistency in how they look and function
• “Pop-ups” in many of the modules are not 508 compliant
• May need to edit out “fluffy” language in some content areas/modules
• Some content areas may be too short
• Narratives embedded into units may need to be converted into readable slide content on the page
• Others may be too long
• Can this information be presented more succinctly?
• Units or modules in some content areas my need to be broken up to be more manageable
Association of Food and Drug Officials
FDA Concerns—A Little Deeper:
• Every content area needs a resources and glossary (not all have one)
• Not all content areas have knowledge checks• SMEs will have to formulate
questions• Knowledge
checks/assessments can have only two options• A. Correct Answer• B. Incorrect Answer
• SME focus should be on the quality of the question
• Feedback on knowledge checks/assessments needs to be built in
• Each content area needs a “Welcome” page• Including objectives
• Each content area needs a “Credits” page
• Each content area needs a “Summary” and “Closeout” page• Summary page is NOT a repeat
of the objectives page• Should include test results
Association of Food and Drug Officials
FDA Concerns—A Little Deeper
•Replace existing images only if they are low quality
•Use a common lexicon (Handout)
•For example:Inspector = Investigator =Regulator

On-Line Course Development Process: Simplified

Goal for Final Product:
•That each Gen Ed module be written in “one voice”•That, across modules, there is consistency in language, formatting and functionality•Compliance with 508 standards
Association of Food and Drug Officials
Goal for Final Product:
•Uniform storyboards for each content area/Gen Ed domain
• Logos, font sizes, images, etc. are all consistent across content areas/domains
• In short, consistency across all content areas
•Applicability across jurisdictions
Association of Food and Drug Officials
Interdisciplinary Team NeededTo Complete the Scope of Work:
Gen Ed Team to include:•Project Manager• Instructional Design
Lead and Team•Writer/Editor•SMEs
AFDO intends to leverage some of the ISD work with IFPTI partners
Association of Food and Drug Officials
*As SME, your primary focus will be updating the storyboard for your course(s)*Focus on content*AFDO/ISD to focus on formatting
Let’s Make It Simple—Focus of SMEs:
•Language•Content•Knowledge Checks•Assessment Questions
Association of Food and Drug Officials
Product/Process Flow:
Association of Food and Drug Officials
1• Lead SME assigned 1 or more content areas
2• Where overlapping units are identified within main content areas, AFDO will forward these units to
Primary SME
3• Where there is overlap in other Gen Ed content areas (i.e., allergens shows up somewhere else), SMEs
for other content area will have their module (allergens) forwarded to the Primary SME for review
4• Lead SMEs are responsible for completing the storyboard for their course, but they will also be
reviewing overlapping modules submitted by SMEs in other content areas
5• Lead SMEs to forward DRAFT content area storyboards to AFDO
• Finished DRAFT content area storyboards will then be forwarded to FDA for review/comments
6• Storyboards in need of editing (per FDA review) to be forwarded back to Primary SME for revisions
• Revisions submitted back to AFDO within established timeframe
7• AFDO to submit FINAL content area storyboards to FDA
Project Deadlines/Due Date:
•December 15, 2016: Deep Dive to AFDO
• January 6, 2017: Draft due to AFDO
•February 17, 2017: Final revision to AFDO
•April 7, 2017: Handoff to FDA
