Leaning on each other
Community E-Newsletter
August 2020
Zara* is a 16-year-old girl. Even at her young
age, she has already faced many challenges.
She came into foster care at age four when her
parents’ rights were terminated. She has spent
nearly half of her life in foster care. Due to
moving around a lot from place to place, she
has a hard time making friends. On top of that,
she is behind in school. She fell into a deep
depression and spent most days cutting herself
and even jumped in front of a car in an attempt
to end her life.
Aetna gathered her foster care case team
together along with her psychiatric residential
treatment facility therapist and began Family
Finding consultation. With the help of her PRTF
therapist, Zara was able to identify many
biological relatives she had lost touch with.
The foster care provider got to work and found
her father, mother, grandmother and aunts
within a matter of hours. Her dad reported that
he had been looking for Zara for years and can’t
wait to have her back in his life. The intervention
has raised Zara's spirits and she enjoys phone
calls with her biological parents several times a
week. She knows exactly when to expect a call
from each family member, which has given her
hope and something to look forward to. Zara
has been redirecting her anger in a positive way,
spending time writing letters to her newly
reunited family.
Through swift action from the foster care case
team and PRTF therapist, this lonely child who
once felt like she had nothing to live for, can
now feel the love and support of her family. Zara
now has a better chance of healing from her
past trauma, and hope for reducing her need for
intensive residential treatment so she receive
care at home by someone she knows and loves.
Zara was so grateful for the team that gave her
and her family the resources they so
desperately needed. She says the team not only
saved her life, but they gave her a second
chance.

National Health Center Week (August 9 – 15) is an annual celebration with the goal of raising
awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers over the past
five decades. This celebration honors those front line providers, staff, and beloved patients
who lost their lives during the (ongoing) COVID-19 pandemic. From the very beginning of the
crisis, Community Health Centers began finding innovative ways to provide preventative and
primary care to their patients. During this week of remembrance, light a candle for those
community health leaders, patients that we lost. As we commemorate those lives and
celebrate the future of Community Health, let’s shine a light across the country that will
embody the future of primary health care access for underserved populations. Shine a light on
your Community Health Center and share the value that it brings to everyone who it touches.
