EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Advanced Environmental Solutions (AES) Ltd. is required to carry out an assessment of the emissions to

sewer on a monthly and a quarterly basis as per Schedule C.3.2 In accordance with the facility EPA

Waste Licence (W0240-01).

BNM Environmental was commissioned to perform the quarterly sampling, analysis and reporting. AES

staff completed the monthly sampling and sent the samples directly to the BNM Environmental

Laboratory. Samples were collected from the emissions to sewer (SE-1) and returned to the laboratory

for analysis.

The Results were in compliance with the requirements of the Waste Licence (W0240-01).

Respectively Submitted,

1.0 EMISSIONS TO SEWER

1.1 Emissions to sewer monitoring location

The emissions to sewer sampling location is described in Table 1.1 and marked on the map

contained in Appendix 1.

TABLE 1.1: LOCATION OF SAMPLING STATIONS

Sample Point Grid Co-ordinates (ITM)

Note 1 Location

Emissions to sewer 584869, 678836 Outside the waste transfer building –

to the North-East side of the site

Note 1 – The grid location of each monitoring location was logged with a handheld Garmin GPS 60.

The units of measurement are Irish Transverse Mercator (ITM).

The emission to sewer sample includes runoff from the waste transfer building and runoff from

the bin wash located south of the waste building.

2.0 Methodology

2.1 Sampling

Grab samples of emissions to sewer were extracted in accordance with the following

standards.

TABLE 2.1: STANDARDS

ISO Standard Description

ISO 5667-1-2006 Guidance on the design of sampling programmes and sampling techniques

ISO 5667-3-2012

Guidance on sample preservation and handling

ISO 5667-14-2014

Guidance on quality assurance of environmental sampling & handling

ISO 5667-10-1992

Guidance on sampling wastewaters

Sampling was conducted in strict accordance with BNM Environmental recognised Standard

Operations Procedures (SOP) TS-W-02. All samples were returned to the laboratory, and

stored between 1-8°C.

Details of the laboratory accreditation, methods and quality standards are provided in

4.0 Discussion

Monthly Parameters

The results of COD analysis fluctuated during quarter 4 ranging from 45 → 708mg/l, as would

be expected from foul water emissions with varying concentrations of discharge. All results

were within the ELV 3,000mg/l. The pH results in Quarter 4 ranged from 6.0 → 8.2pH units

and remain within the ELV 6-10pH units. Suspended solids results fluctuated during quarter 4

ranging from 117 → 257mg/l and remain below the ELV of 1,000mg/l.

Quarterly Parameters

The following decreases were noted since the previous monitoring event:

Mineral oils decreased (2.36→<0.01mg/l)

Ammonia decreased (29→ 21mg/l)

Orthophosphate decreased (4.6→1.8mg/l)

The following increases were noted since the previous monitoring event

Oils, fats and greases increased (6→14mg/l)

Sulphate increased (46→53mg/l).

MBAS increased (0.65→1.89mg/l). Despite the varying concentrations and fluctuations in

levels from Quarter 3 to Quarter 4, all parameters analysed were below their respective

quarterly emission limit values.

Figures 1 to 10 below graphically display the results obtained October 2014 to December 2015.

ACCREDITED QUALITY SYSTEM

INAB Accreditation

BNM Environmental analytical laboratories are accredited to ISO 17025 by the National Accreditation

Board (INAB). ISO 17025 accreditation ensures that the laboratory operates a quality system with

technically competent staff. The laboratory has accreditation since 1997 and it is the policy of the

laboratory to achieve and maintain a high standard of quality consistent with client's requirements in all

aspects of the work carried out within the laboratory.

Interlaboratory Proficiency Schemes

To ensure the accuracy of the analytical testing the laboratory participates in several external

proficiency schemes. The ongoing competence of the laboratory and its staff is assessed by

participation in various inter-laboratory proficiency testing schemes, such as LGC Aquacheck scheme

and the EPA Intercalibration programme organised for environmental laboratories throughout Ireland.

BNM Environmental Laboratory Services & Analytical Laboratory is listed on the EPA’s register of

Quality Controlled Laboratories

Control Chain of Custody

As part of the Quality System in place in BNM Environmental, measures are taken to ensure controlled

chain of custody. An outline of the chain of custody is given below.
