Pentek, Inc. designs embedded computer boards and recording systems for DSP, software radio and data acquisi-tion for both COTS and rugged environments. In an interview with Aerospace & Defense Technology, Vice PresidentRodger Hosking explained how signal recorder technology is being implemented in military unmanned vehicles.

Sponsored Content

A&DT: Why is real-time recording of wideband RF signals acritical part of radar, signal intelligence, and electronic war-fare systems for unmanned vehicles?

Hosking: Many unmanned vehicles aredeployed for gathering information about cer-tain regions of interest. Real-time recorderscan capture wideband signals from radar andcommunications receivers as raw, digitizeddata that must be analyzed after the mission. These signals can yield vital information about

which radars and radios are operational in the area, identify thetype of enemy equipment, determine which countermeasure sys-tems are operating, and decrypt encoded signals for content.

A&DT: What does an FPGA in the UV electronics systems offer?

Hosking: Unmanned vehicles abound with different types ofsensors, signals, interfaces, and protocols. FPGAs excel atimplementing specialized I/O interfaces with real-time process-ing engines to extract information. These include configurableparallel and gigabit serial ports for data converters. FPGAs alsoaccommodate digital down-converters for software radio, andthe complex timing required for data acquisition and waveformgeneration for radar systems. FPGAs can also perform special-ized digital signal processing operations that include decoding, decryption, beamforming, and demodulation, as well as imageprocessing tasks like pattern recognition, motion detection, tar-get identification, and classification.

A&DT: What is the best way to provide phase coherencyacross all channels of recording systems?

Hosking: Phase coherency requires that analog signals acrossall channels are digitized and captured at precisely the samesample clock edge. Usually, this is in response to a hardwaretrigger that starts the acquisition and recording. Provisions forsynchronization must be incorporated in the circuit design ofthe digitizer boards, not only for multiple A/Ds on each board, but also across multiple boards.

A&DT: Why is SWaP important?

Hosking: Size, weight, and power often present non-negotiable lim-its for equipment in unmanned vehicles. Size is an obvious factor, but shape can be just as important for fitting subsystems into thevehicle like a puzzle. For UAVs, weight drives the required launchpower and duration of flight time. Power is usually the most impor-tant limitation to mission duration, but it may also impact the effec-tive range of sensors and communication systems.

A&DT: What is the best way to achieve precision time stamping?

Hosking: Recorders equipped with GPS receivers can timestamp each recorded file with the precise time of the first sam-

ple. If the sample rate is locked to the GPS frequency reference, each sample in the recording is precisely defined in time.Additionally, Pentek recorders can log latitude, longitude, andelevation at programmable intervals of time.

A&DT: How are the best real-time recording rates achieved?

Hosking: Today, solid state drives (SSDs) provide the fastestread/write rates, now exceeding 500 MB/sec. RAID controllersaggregate both the speed and capacity of multiple SSDs todeliver rates to 8 GB/sec and higher. By judiciously assigningthe PCIe ports of server class chip sets, and carefully control-ling memory buffer structures and DMA block transfer sizes, overall system recording rates can be maximized.

A&DT: What are some thermal management techniques thatallow for operation in harsh environments?

Hosking: In air-cooled environments, air must also be forcedthrough the chassis across each of the heat-producing deviceslike FPGAs and CPUs. For very rugged environments, Pentek’s1/2ATR Small Form Factor recorders feature a completelysealed system with an air channel and that pulls air through thecenter of the chassis to effectively remove heat from internalfins thermally connected to the components. In conduction-cooled systems, heat can be removed by forcing air acrossexternal fins, or by direct connection to a cold plate.

A&DT: What are some of the military specifications for UVequipment?

Hosking: Because most military unmanned vehicles mustremain operational across a wide range of adverse environ-ments, most must pass tests defined in MIL-STD-810. These testsinclude temperature limits, shock and vibration levels, variousoperational altitudes, acceleration, and resistance to fungus, humidity, fog, rain, and dust. Other tests defined in MIL-STD-410expose the units to high levels of electrical and magnetic energyto validate unimpaired operation and strictly limit the allowedlevels of radiated and conducted electromagnetic emissions.

A&DT: What are some best practice considerations forunmanned vehicle electronics?

Hosking: Because the equipment must be easily controllablefrom the mission computer, Pentek products offer a high levelapplication programming interface (API) using intuitive com-mand functions and parameters that simplify operation of theequipment and interrogation of status and system health. Forunmanned vehicles with onboard recorders, Pentek offersQuickPac drive packs that hold eight SSDs for quick removaland replacement, minimizing the down time between missions.

2020 GLOBAL ENGINEERING & MANUFACTURING DATABASE

GEM — the Global Engineering & Manufacturing Database

GEM amplifies your marketing program by marrying rich behavioral data to the most detailed demographics in the industry. That means you can reach prospects with demonstrated levels of engagement in the technologies and industries you care about, adding efficiency and effectiveness to your marketing communications program.

Most marketing databases begin and end with demographics — who people are, not what they do. The GEM advantage is rooted in behavior — what they bought, attended, read, visited, and more — all cross-referenced to a detailed taxonomy.

GEM records leverage customer behavior from SAE International, the global leader in automotive and aerospace standards and engineering IP, and combine it with detailed reader data from Tech Briefs Media Group, publisher of Tech Briefs, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace & Defense Technology, Medical Design Briefs, and more.

The result is comprehensive coverage of the design engineering universe, with cascading levels of engagement. That means you can tailor your marketing communication lists to your exact specifications in the lead-nurturing process.

Make GEM the cornerstone of your integrated marketing program. We are committed to serving our readers and are fully compliant with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Here’s an example of how it works:

• Start with design engineers in aerospace and defense

• Factor in employees at Boeing, Airbus, BAE, and Rockwell Collins

• Add a layer of engagement — subscribers to Aerospace & Defense Technology and attendees at SAE’s Aerotech events

• Match to buyers of aerospace quality standards and papers

• Refine to those who’ve purchased in the past 60 days Congratulations! You just identified key decision-makers early in the design cycle, ripe for conversion to Marketing-Qualified Leads.

Meeting Healthcare Needs An idea of how medical product designers are using

advanced polymers to create innovations for use in

healthcare environments can be seen by examining a

few recent medical and healthcare products and their

materials.

A noninvasive nasal ventilation mask imposed a

challenging set of requirements for product developers

(Figure 1). The developers selected Grilamid TR60, a

BPA-free polymer that offers good chemical resistance

(dishwashing at 100 °C for 12 minutes), and also

satisfies USP Class VI biocompatibility requirements.

Grilamid TR60 offers the high heat resistance (170 °C)

needed to achieve high bonding strength (>70 N tensile

adhesion force) to liquid silicone rubber.

Another example is provided by the Crossbow fascial

closure system for minimally invasive surgery by Suture

Ease (Figure 2). Grilamid TR55 was selected to give the

product its desired characteristics of high mechanical

strength and toughness, low weight, good chemical

resistance, and sterilizability.

In a third example, developers of a bone cement

delivery system selected Grilamid TR 90 for several key

properties essential to the task (Figure 3). Grilamid TR

90 offers mechanical strength and toughness, high

chemical resistance, and high transparency — and is fully

compliant with USP Class VI biocompatibility standards.

The resulting device provides clinicians with a delivery

system especially suited to the needs of orthopedic

procedures requiring precise delivery of bone cement.

Healthcare Application Challenges Medical product developers enjoy success in many

fields but they must also overcome significant

challenges. Important developments for dealing with the

transmission of infectious diseases can be particularly

troublesome for product developers seeking to select the

right materials for medical devices.

To address the spread of nosocomial infections,

healthcare administrators and providers use a host of

cleaners and disinfectants that can have adverse effects

on the materials and components of medical devices.

Manufacturers and developers need to be selective about

the types and grades of polymers they specify for certain

applications.

Inappropriate selection of polymers can result in

degradation of the materials when exposed to hospital

cleaners and disinfectants, shortening the lifecycle of the

product and potentially raising the risk of device failure,

with the associated risk of harm to patients or providers.

Materials Selection A growing concern with medical devices is a tendency of

many polymeric materials to craze or crack when exposed

to solvents, including the chemical disinfectants typically

used in healthcare environments.

Introduction The development of advanced pharmaceuticals and

medical devices is a crowning achievement of modern

healthcare and a significant factor in improving health

and longevity worldwide.

Healthcare environments impose a wide range of

challenges on product developers, who must specify

materials that are not only capable of fulfilling the

primary functions of mechanical strength and stability,

but also a variety of secondary functions such as easy

manufacturability, resistance to a variety of risks

found in healthcare environments.
