Challenges
Hospitals often lose 15% or more of their assets each year
Asset utilization rates average 35-40% in hospitals, while equipment search times may average 30 minutes per piece
Up to 50% of the time a biomedical engineer finds a piece of equipment for maintenance it is in use or scheduled for use and cannot be taken
A hospital with 300 refrigerators and freezers, with each unit checked three times per day at five minutes per check would costa hospital over $1.3 million in labor each year
Annual hospital inventory management can take one FTE 25% of the year to complete

Equipment Maintenance
Equipment cannot be located on time leading to non compliance with regulatory requirements
Valuable staff time spent on searching for assets due for PM
Asset’s availability is unknown
Recall management requires immediate action

Temperature/Humidity Monitoring
Temperature MonitoringBlood, drugs, vaccines, food and tissue samples in refrigerators and freezers require maintaining daily records
Humidity MonitoringPoor humidity levels in OR’s, patient and storage rooms can cause bacteria, fungus, mites, asthma, respiratory infections and chemical interactions
Nursing, Lab, Pharmacy and Dietary staff perform manual temperature and humidity monitoring and logging each day
Logging mechanisms are unreliable (lost data, gaps in data) and often expensive Labor is utilized inefficiently

Patient & Staff Safety
No effective way to determine the location of medical emergencies that occur out-of-room
Hospital staff may often work with patients that pose a risk to staff
At-risk patients (Trauma, behavioral health, Alzheimer, elderly, etc.) wandering and elopement
Page 16www.aeroscout.com
Patient & Staff Safety
AeroScout call button tags worn by patients or staff send alerts along with location to staff and security personnel
Integration to VOIP phones, security systems (e.g. cameras, doors), nurse call
Live tracking and historical path of wandering patients
Chokepoints at exits from department/building and entrances to restricted areas

Using Wi-Fi for Visibility
Traditional Infrastructures:Each piece of asset information requires a dedicated network.Single-purpose Active RFID readers, wireless sensors, etc. add unnecessary hardware.
Wi-Fi based Infrastructure:The existing WLAN is the visibility network, often without the need for additional hardware.

How Does it Work?
1. Wi-Fi-Based Active RFID tags send a tiny wireless 802.11 signal at a regular interval
Tag’s messages consume less than 1/2msec, tags do not associate with Wi-Fi access points and do not require thousands of IP addresses
2. Signal is received by the Wi-Fi access points, and is sent to a Location Engine3. The Location Engine determines the tag’s location, and sends it to the visibility
software4. Visibility software uses location data to display maps and reports, enable
searches, create alerts, manage assets, etc.

Track…current and
historical location of medical devices and people, from a
Web interface
Alert…automated alerting and notification (pump leaving a protected zone, overdue for maintenance, requiring
delivery, etc.)
Manage…the utilization of equipment, control the workflow and
utilize location data for operational
analysis
Integrate…location and status
information to existing hospital applications
(asset mgmt, ORIS, EMR, etc.)
MobileView is a web-based business software application that acts as both an end-user application, and a platform for integration and development.
