• Silica aerogel powder dispersed in water to form paste like form to avoid dust generation during application of aerogel in various composites. The paste retains its

hydrophobic and thermal insulation performance after dries out.

• Due to this characteristics, water based aerogel paste has varieties of application in developing various aerogel composites products like aerogel-pulp, aerogel-ce-

ment, aerogel-fiber, aerogel-paints and coatings for thermal insulation

◈Background

Silica Aerogel can be used in coatings to improve thermal insulation and hydrophobic performance of the coatings and cement composites. But it is very important to select right form of aerogel to achieve target performances.

Following points should be taken into consideration while selecting the right form of silica aerogel.

>> Cement and paint

1. The mixing ability of the silica aerogel with cement and concrete.

2. The mechanical strength of the cement and con-crete after mixing aerogel.

3. The setting time of the cement and concrete com-posites after mixing aerogel.

>> Coating

1. The binder in which the coating is based.2. The adhesion strength of the coatings3. The viscosity of the coatings.4. The curing nature of the coatings.

◈Obstacles in application of Silica Aerogel in Coatings/Paints/Cement.

1. Silica Aerogel has hydrophobic property. The strong water repellant property of silica aerogel limits its wide applications. Due to hydrophobic nature of silica aerogel, it is not easy to mix aerogel in water based binders/ coatings.

2. On the other hand, the nano-pores present in the silica aerogel absorbs solvent based binder/coating into its pores. This causes increase in viscosity, decrease in thermal insulation performance, weak adhesion, elon-gated curing time and difficulty in application.

3. It is chemically difficult to combine cement & paint and aerogel using other forms of binders. This will bring changes in the performance of cement and paint composites like mechanical strength an setting time.

AEROGEL-W

To meet the obstacles in applying silica aerogel powder and bead in specialized coatings, we have devel-oped paste type aerogel product by dispersing hydrophobic aerogel powder in water. The following features makes it applicable in coatings.

Benefits

※ Please refer to the TDS.

▣ Water Based Silica Aerogel Paste: Highly recommended for applying in Coating/Cement/Paint

Water based

Retains Hydrophobic property after dried/cured.

98.% silica aerogel content after dried/cured

Easily mixable in water based binders/coatings.

Easily mixable in solvent based binders/coatings.

Non-dusty and easy to handle

Comparatively lower absorption of solvent than aerogel powder and

bead.

Mixable with organic/inorganic resins(silicones/phenol) without

harm to bonding strength of the resins.

Remarkable upgrade in thermal insulation performance of the coat-

ings.

Remarkable upgrade in thermal insulation performance of the

paints.

Controllable water content and aerogel content.

Controllable viscosity.

Decrease in density of cement and paint composites.

◈Formulations

Coatings

Water based silica aerogel paste can be mixed directly with the

binders/coatings by agitator or stirring.

Depending upon the solvent percentage and bonding strength of

the coatings, water based silica aerogel paste can be used up to

maximum 60% by weight.

Paints & Cement

Water based silica aerogel paste can be mixed directly with the

cement and paints by mixing or stirring.

Water based silica aerogel paste can be mixed up to maximum

50% by weight

Water based silica aerogel contains 70~90% water. This amount of

water should be taken into consideration while mixing with cement

and paints.

Silica Aerogel Cement Composites

Cement composite formed using water based silica aerogel paste.

Benefits of using water based silica aerogel paste with cement or mortars:

Formulation of water based silica aerogel and ce-ment composites :

1. Easy formulation with cement and mortars 2. No dust formation during mixing 3. Solution for the difficulty of mixing hydrophobic aero-

gel powder with cement and mortars due to strong hydrophobic property of silica aerogel

4. Retains hydrophobic property after curing 5. Light weight, lower sp. gravity, hydrophobic property

and lower thermal conductivity compared to the only cement and mortar composites.

1. Add cement or mortars in silica aerogel paste by weight percentage

2. Mix it homogeneously for proper mixing of aerogel paste and cement or mortars

3. By weight percentage 5~20% of silica aerogel paste is recommended. Consider the amount of water present in the silica aerogel paste. It is 80% by weight.
