Course Obe!"#$es

Students are introduced to di%%erent types o% space propulsion engines7motors in this class. Di%%erent roc'ets( such as:

monopropellant( )i#propellant( solid( li8uid( nuclear and electrical roc'ets( are discussed in detail. -or'ing principles o% these

roc'ets( their intended use and their design are discussed. ower limited and energy limited roc'et wor'ing principles aregi9en. he course uses %undamental engineering 'nowledge gathered in many di%%erent classes( such as thermodynamics( heat

trans%er( %luid mechanics to study and analye roc'ets. he class )uilds on the e3perience gained in the 'nowledge on air#

)reathing engines. he class will )e a uni8ue e3perience especially %or the aerospace engineers interested in space missions.

&dditional in%ormation a)out the no9el technologies that are under de9elopment )y the go9ernment agencies are alsointroduced in the class.

&t the conclusion o% the course students will )e a)le to:

• &nalye any e3isting roc'et and generate per%ormance characteristics %or the roc'et

• Design roc'ets %or speci%ied missions.

• *hoose an engine %or speci%ic missions.

• ,a'e no9el roc'et designs and analye them.

6raduate students or the undergraduate students ta'ing the class as a graduate class are re8uired to wor' on a

computer program7research topic decided )etween the instructor and the student in addition to the class re8uirements.

Students will )e re8uired to turn in a report and present their research in class close to the end o% the semester. ong#distance education students are re8uired either to ma'e a oweroint presentation with sound em)edded in it( or to9ideotape their presentations. resentation ha9e to )e sent )y email or regular mail )e%ore the presentation date.

Students will not get a %ull grade without these re8uirements )eing %ul%illed; presentation will cost them a one %ull

grade /i.e the top score they can get will )e <.

Students are e3pected to search %or research topics prior to discussing it with the instructor. he topics must )e selected at the )eginning o% the semester. & research topic rele9ant to your ongoing research could ser9e as a

research topic i% it is appropriate. he research should )e started a%ter discussing the topic with the instructor.

he %ollowing are e3pected %rom the students:

a =eport: & report descri)ing the pro)lem( main e8uations used in sol9ing the pro)lem( %igures descri)ing the

pro)lem and the solutions( and discussion on e8uations7%igures. he computer program used in the research

should also )e included in the report. he report can )e written using the &I&& paper %ormat.

he report should ha9e sections( including:

• &)stract

• Introduction7<ac'ground: descri)ing the research topic and the pre9ious wor' done on the topic.

•  >umerical ,ethod: & )rie% description o% the method/s and the e8uations used.

• =esults and Discussion: & section discussing your %indings.

• *onclusions: & section descri)ing the conclusions o% your wor'.

• =e%erences
